ABSTRACT Chaotic systems can exhibit a complex evolution that is well-suited to musical control. By modelling one such system, known as Chua's circuit, a number of chaotic attractors that oscillate in rhythmic fashion were discovered, similar to traditional wave oscillators used in sound synthesis. This led to an exploration of the sonification of the system and an investigation of musical mappings such as filter control, spatial rendering, and note generation.

The goal of this project is to produce a software musical instrument using chaotic processes as a sound synthesis method. Realtime control through MIDI note messages and continuous controllers is required. Early results are described, along with suggestions for continuing work. CHAOS AND MUSIC: FROM TIME SERIES ANALYSIS TO EVOLUTIONARY COMPOSITION2018 •
For the purpose of creating new musical instruments, chaotic dynamical systems can be simulated in real time to synthesize complex sounds. This work investigates a series of discrete-time chaotic maps, which have the potential to generate intriguing sounds when they are adjusted to be on the edge of chaos. With these chaotic maps as studied historically, the edge of chaos tends to be razor-thin, which can make it difficult to employ them for making new musical instruments. The authors therefore suggest connecting chaotic maps with digital waveguides, which (1) make it easier to synthesize harmonic tones and (2) make it harder to fall off of the edge of chaos while playing a musical instrument. The authors argue therefore that this technique widens the razor-thin edge of chaos into a musical highway.

Modern Science is finding new methods of looking at biological, physical or social phenomena. Traditional methods of quantification are no longer sufficient and new approaches are emerging. These approaches make it apparent that the phenomena the observer is looking at are not classifiable by conventional methods. These phenomena are complex. A complex system, as Chua's oscillator, is a nonlinear configuration whose dynamical behavior is chaotic.

Characterizing chaotic melodies in automatic music composition2010 •
In this paper, we initially present an algorithm for automatic composition of melodies using chaotic dynamical systems. Afterward, we characterize chaotic music in a comprehensive way as comprising three perspectives: musical discrimination, dynamical influence on musical features, and musical perception. With respect to the first perspective, the coherence between generated chaotic melodies (continuous as well as discrete chaotic melodies) and a set of classical reference melodies is characterized by statistical descriptors and melodic measures. The significant differences among the three types of melodies are determined by discriminant analysis. Regarding the second perspective, the influence of dynamical features of chaotic attractors, e.g., Lyapunov exponent, Hurst coefficient, and correlation dimension, on melodic features is determined by canonical correlation analysis. The last perspective is related to perception of originality, complexity, and degree of melodiousness (Euler’s gradus suavitatis) of chaotic and classical melodies by nonparametric statistical tests. © 2010 American Institute of Physics
Music composition from nonlinear dynamics has been a subject of thorough research, producing interesting music tracks. Simple chaotic maps or even more complex iterative schemes have been proposed, taking advantage of the “structured spontaneity” of nonlinear dynamics by directly transforming the mathematical objects to musical entities. In this work we examine the music compositions produced by two nonlinear systems in terms of complexity, expressed through the Shannon Information Entropy of their Pitch Class ...
