In the modern world, access-limiting fortification walls are not typically regarded as promoting democracy. But in Greek antiquity, increased investment in fortifications was correlated with the prevalence and stability of democracy. This paper sketches the background conditions of the Greek city-state ecology, analyzes a passage in Aristotle's Politics, and assesses the choices of Hellenistic kings, Greek citizens, and urban elites, as modeled in a simple game. The paper explains how city walls promoted democracy and helps to explain several other puzzles: why Hellenistic kings taxed Greek cities at lower than expected rates; why elites in Greek cities supported democracy; and why elites were not more heavily taxed by democratic majorities. The relationship between walls, democracy, and taxes promoted continued economic growth into the late classical and Hellenistic period (4 th-2 nd centuries BCE), and ultimately contributed to the survival of Greek culture into the Roman era, and thus modernity. We conclude with a consideration of whether the walls-democracy relationship holds in modernity.

God’s Saved Israel examines identity in the Pauline corpus in terms of how Paul expresses the new identity in Christ in relation to the identity of ancient Israel. In this study, the way in which Paul uses the terms “Israel,” “Israelite,” and “Judean” is approached on the basis of the way in which these terms were used in the second temple period by both insiders and outsiders, rather than presupposing that Paul used it in a different way. By thoroughly engaging with the New Perspective on Paul and the Radical New Perspective on Paul, Paul’s conception of identity is pursued mainly along theological-exegetical lines, especially in terms of the contrast between flesh and S/spirit. While Rom 11:26, which points to “all Israel” that “will be saved,” and Gal 6:16, which points to “the Israel of God” who are blessed, are often utilized in a paradigmatic way to interpret the rest of Paul, the approach in this book is the other way around. These two texts are approached by first assessing Paul’s conception of identity in the whole of the Pauline corpus and then to interpret Rom 11:26 and Gal 6: 16 with a larger understanding of identity in Paul at hand.

The intention of the study was to examine student mentoring, self-description, and academic achievement in a selected private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. There were 150 respondents in the study. The 2 instruments used for collecting data were adopted from Cohen (1995) for identifying the mentoring style of the mentors of the students, and from Marsh (1999) for identifying self-description of the students. The analysis of data employed descriptive statistics (independent t-test) as well as Chisquare, One-way ANOVA, and Two-way ANOVA. The research inquiries focused on the following issues: (1) identifying the mentoring style, self-description, and academic achievement of the students; (2) the relationship of mentoring style, self-description, academic achievement, and demographic profiles; and (3) the interactive effects—individual and joint—of mentoring style, self-description, and student academic achievement. The findings of the study showed that 2 mentoring styles were pred...

Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease with relevant morbidity and mortality. In this report, we illustrate the clinical course of a suspected Bothrops snakebite envenoming of a patient that evidenced severe pain, edema, pallor, regional lymphadenopathy, ecchymosis, myonecrosis, and bullous erythema in the right lower limb, specially around the fang marks. The clinical course progressed to compartment syndrome followed with decompressive fasciotomies to reduce pressure within the affected compartment.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen responsible for epidemics of debilitating arthritic disease. The recent outbreak (2004-2014) resulted in an estimated 1.4-6.5 million cases, with imported cases reported in nearly 40 countries. The development of CHIKV-specific diagnostics and research tools is thus highly desirable. Herein we describe the generation and characterization of the first mAbs specific for the capsid protein (CP) of CHIKV. The antibodies recognized isolates representing the major genotypes of CHIKV, as well as several other alphaviruses, and were reactive in a range of assays including ELISA, Western blot, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry (IHC). We have also used the anti-CP mAb 5.5G9 in IHC studies to show that capsid antigen is persistently expressed 30 days post-infection in cells with macrophage morphology in a mouse model of chronic CHIKV disease. These antibodies may thus represent useful tools for further research, including investi...
