The Effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) on Students` Reading Comprehension at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar

ABSTRACT “The Effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) on Students’ Reading Comprehension at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar”. By: Name : Angela Falen W Sinaga Academic Number : 14120403 Consultant : (1) Dr. Bloner Sinurat, M.Hum (2) Rudiarman Purba, S.Pd.,M.Pd The objective of the research is to find out whether Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) significantly affect on the students’ reading comprehension at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar or not. The research design of this research was quasi experimental research. The population of the research was all sudents at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar. The researcher chose two classes, They were VIII-1 as Experimental Class and VIII-2 as Control Class. The subjects chosen for this study were 32 students in Experimental Class and 32 students in Control Class. Then, the total sample were 64 students. The experimental class was treated by using Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) while the control class, Teacher taught the students by using Conventional Method or without STAD. The instrument for collecting the data was the pretest and posttest include the level taxonomy of reading comprehension in which, the tests were multiple choice questions. It was given to subjects before and after the treatment. Based on the findings, the results of t-test and discussion, the following conclusions, the researcher found the students’ posttest, There were 27 or 84.4% students who passed the minimum criteria of mastery learning (KKM = 73) in Experimental Class. But, there were only 4 students or 12.5% who passed the (KKM =73) in Control class. The score of the students in experimental class was higher than control class. The result of ttest = 6.3511 and at the level of significance α 0.05 with df = 62 (Nx + Ny – 2 = 32 + 32 - 2 = 62) while ttable = 1.671. It means that T-observed is higher than T-table (6.35> 1.67). Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) significantly affects the students’ reading comprehension at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar on Narrative Text. In the result of T-test showed that the Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. Pematangsiantar, 1 September 2018 The Researcher, Angela Falen W Sinaga Ac.
