The Effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) on Students` Reading Comprehension at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar

Located in junior high school (SMP) 35 Semarang, this study applied STAD in giving solution to students’ problems in reading comprehension. Those problems were written in three statements: first, what the problems in reading comprehension faced by the eighth graders of SMP 35 Semarang were; second, how to implement this strategy in the practice of reading comprehension; and third, how STAD could improve the practice of reading comprehension to the eighth graders of junior high school. The method used in this study was qualitative. The data was gained through observing, giving questionnaire, and interviewing students. The major problem was the students had low achievement and motivation which was stimulated by the lack of having effective practice. This research scrutinizes how Student Team Achievement Division facilitates and affects students in reading comprehension. A pre-experimental design was applied in this research, and it was conducted in six meetings; by giving pretest, four treatments, and posttest. It involved thirty six of the tenth grade students of secondary school at Lubuklinggau, South Sumatera, in Indonesia who attended reading comprehension class. The data were collected by using reading test that was given twice for students; pre-test and post-test were given before and after treatments. The finding of this research disclosed that the students’ average in pretest was 60.00 and in posttest their average score were increased to be 75.00. Based on the result of the paired t-test calculation, it was found that t-obtained 8.196 was higher than t-table 1.684 as the critical value. This study is a descriptive study of seventh grade student at SMPN 11 Bandung academic year 2014-2015. The objectives of this research are: (1) to know whether Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) can improve the students’ reading ability and (2) to describe what happens when STAD is implemented in teaching reading in the classroom.This study used a classroom action research design. The participants of this research were the students from one of Junior High Schools in Surakarta, Central Java. There were 32 students which consisted of14 males and 18 females. This study was an experimental research which aimed at identifying the effect of implementation of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) and learning motivation toward students’ reading competence. This research used 2x2 factorial designs. The data collected through test and analyzed by using statistical Two-Way Anova and Tukey Test. Today learner-centered teaching is regarded as a sine qua non of optimal educational environments; therefore, many cooperative techniques are studied. This quantitative study reports the effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) technique on improving Iranian elementary EFL learners’ reading comprehension. After administering YLE Flyers test to 51 male EFL young learners in elementary level at a well-known language institute in Tehran, Iran, they were divided into control and experimental groups.
