From the start of my New York life, my mentors — the playwright/director/critic Eric Bentley and playwright/novelist/New Yorker essayist George W.S. Trow — instructed me to be a teaching artist who can zone in directly to the original texts and primary sources. Eric persuaded me to move beyond mere criticism. George taught me that, especially in the Theatre, no gain could be had if we do not put our brilliant thoughts and theories into real practice and dramatic action.  That transversal marks the journey in this Curriculum Vitae before you.

Invited to contribute to a PMLA Theories & Methodologies cluster on reading poetry during a pandemic, I argue instead for the importance of other priorities besides poetry during our current pandemic: the importance of discussing race and racism critically, new attempts today to re-discipline English and return English departments to their old, early-20th-century roles of only analyzing poetry and literature, and I argue for the importance of collaboratively undisciplining English instead, if we want to produce the university we want, post-pandemic.

This chapter explores several challenges facing English studies at the Moroccan University with a focus on how the English department is affected by the neoliberal policymaking environment of successive Moroccan governments since the 1980s. The contribution provides a political economy analysis of the problems and challenges facing the English department. The chapter is based on empirical data gathered through and enriched by the author’s first-hand experience as a professor in the English department at the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Mohammed V University in Rabat. The analysis also builds on the existing literature, even though scanty, on the English department and the public university in Morocco. It places the crisis of the English department and the Moroccan university today within the specific context of Moroccan education and economic policy since the neoliberal market reforms in the 1980s. The first part of the chapter explores the evolution of the mission of the English studies department and some of the challenges it has faced since its inception in 1963. The following part puts these challenges in context by foregrounding the latent causes of the crisis of the English department and the Moroccan university in an era of neoliberal governmentality and private-sector competition. This contextual factor has hitherto been ignored in the literature even though it is a key aspect of the crisis of the English department in particular and the Moroccan university in general. Finally, the chapter provides a number of practical measures susceptible to taking the English department out of its current crisis in spite of the overwhelming pessimism among academic staff and policy observers in the Moroccan education sector.

This introductory chapter provides a survey of the history and current situation of English as a medium of instruction and research production in Moroccan higher education. It opens with a historical account of the diplomatic relations between Morocco and the English-speaking world. English made its entry into the Moroccan university in the 1960s, and its influence has grown apace especially in the era of globalization. The second part of the chapter outlines a series of challenges facing the departments of English in Moroccan higher education institutions. Finally, we preview the sixteen chapters in this volume, which consists of extensive and empirical studies by experienced Moroccan faculty members.

The collective responsibilities and rights of female students are ignored in the academic domain of Sindh, Pakistan. The third world countries are a mirror image of it and highlight their declining condition in the educational perspectives of female education. The twelve Psychosocial barriers are highlighted in this study. They are analyzed to know about their extent in female students in one of the Public sector universities of Sindh, Pakistan. The quantitative design was adopted, and a questionnaire was used as the instrument to measure percentages and frequencies. A five-point Likert Scale was selected for the process of data collection measurement from thirty female participants of the English department. The thirty female students represented four academic stages in a co-academic setting. Abstrak Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mendeskripsikan keefektifan penggunaan Teks Deskriptif pada kelas Bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa program studi pendidikan Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia. Kurikulum di tingkat universitas menuntut pengajar untuk dapat memberikan pengajaran dengan menggunakan materi yang ampuh dan terkait dengan kehidupan mereka sehari-hari dan mudah dimengerti. Tujuan kedua adalah menciptakan suasana pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang menarik, efektif dan dapat dimengerti pada bagian membaca (reading) teks deskriptif, lebih lanjut materi ini dapat membantu mahasiswa untuk belajar secara menyeluruh dalam memahami isi teks mengenai kebudayaan minang kabau khususnya. Listening makes sense of what one heard in which that listening is a primary skill, because children learn listening skill unconsciously and naturally before they learn the other skills. Accuracy of Answer refers to a student's or listener's ability to respond to a task with the correct answer. Advertisements can be one of the most enjoyable ways to practice and develop listening skills. This research will be conducted in a preexperimental using a quantitative approach. The population of this research will be on Junior High School students' of SMPN 3 Bontomarannu; it consists of one class at the second grade.. The research will take one class as the sample. The sample is second grade students' of SMPN 3 Bontomarannu; it consists of 36 students'. The instrument of this research is a listening test; the test is filled in the blank. This test will determine the students' understanding about listening comprehension skills, and the test will apply by using advertisements.

The factors affecting the teacher training policies are numerous, such as the needs of the institution, the funding, time, technology and especially the importance attached to an ongoing development process. Particularly in higher education, lip service is paid to English language teacher training policies. To investigate the shortcomings of these teacher training policies, this research study was conducted by interviewing instructors from twenty different universities in Turkey. The study conducted has revealed the fact that there is a gap in specific language learning management policies concerning preservice and in-service language teacher training for university instructors in Turkey.

The paper aims to provide an overview of the development and changes in the courses at the Department of English in Niš, at the BA and MA level, as well as at the PhD level (in philology, Faculty of Philosophy, Niš), related to different linguistic approaches to the study of meaning (construction) and human cognition. These courses included in the curricula were initially influenced by the ideas stemming from the philosophy of mind and cognitive linguistics, and later by psycholinguistic research. We begin the paper with the general overview of the courses and we emphasize the main contributions to their development. Then we address in more detail some of the most important theoretical concepts which include the following: meaning construction, categorization, context, and a general overview of the main ideas in cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics. We also stress the benefits of such a comprehensive approach for the students, and the thereby presented possibilities for further investigation.

Critical pedagogy is a prism that reflects the complexities between teaching and learning in a given classroom
described by Paulo FREIRE who has heavily endorses student's ability to think critically about their education
situation so as to recognize connections with their social context in which they are embedded. This research
paper aims to present an analyze of how critical pedagogy is used in the classroom discourse. The
investigation was conducted at HECI Business School. A study was carried out to examine students' and
teachers' attitude toward classroom discourse's nature and data was collected using not only a questionnaire
which was applied for students , but also using interviews with teachers. The research approaches used were
quantitative for the students to collect data either by face-to-face or by mailing the questionnaire, as well as
qualitative approach as it's concerned with opinions and behaviors through interviewing teachers. The method
used was to analyze students' and teachers' questionnaire and interviews in order to get the exact information
about the working topic. The study results indicated that the FREIRIEN concepts were used in HECI Business
School's classroom discourse and there are some significant differences between teachers' and students' in
their attitude to and the use of critical pedagogy in the classroom discourse.

Michelle Masse' and Katie Hogan's edited collection, Over Ten Million Served (2010), argues that "complaining about service is not the same as critically analyzing service as a significant dimension of academic labor" (15). Nor, as Phillips and Heinert argue, is the admonition to "just say no" an ethical solution to the gendered inequity of academic labor. In this essay, I not only illustrate the consequences of saying yes to service and analyze its significance, but I illustrate the ways that service positioned me to advocate for change at my own institution. More specifically, I focus on the unique administrative role of the Department Chair, particularly in terms of the gendered emotional labor required to sustain an academic department and the "incongruous, gendered bureaucratic structures" (Bird) that have essentially institutionalized and naturalized "emotive dissonance" as an inevitable consequence of being a chair. I argue that interrogating this emotive dissonance-these "outlaw emotions"-is critical not only to exposing how those structures perpetuate inequity, but also to transforming gendered service and redefining the power and authority of academics, more generally. In making this argument, I draw upon sociological theories and research on emotion studies , research on academic administration, and my own administrative experience, including the strategies I developed based on my own "outlaw emotions" to disrupt these gendered discourses by 1) reconfiguring the definitions of and rewards for "service" within my department, and 2) initiating an institutional conversation about Department Chair labor that led to several policy changes.

Transforming English Studies: New Voices in an Emerging Genre is a concerned response to the disciplinary crises—both real and imagined—that threaten the viability of contemporary English Studies. These crises have been variously cited as the lack of employment prospects for English Studies PhDs, the decline in English majors, the corporatization of the university, the crunch in academic publishing, widespread budget cutbacks, the varying perceptions of the value of scholarly work, and the field’s inequitable labor practices. Inspired by the work of Stephen North, Transforming English Studies contributes to a new and emerging genre of English Studies scholarship: the genre of self-reflexive disciplinary critique.

Transforming English Studies turns our attention to the field itself as an object of study and provides what Gary A. Olson calls in his forward to this book a “self-conscious, meta-level examination of the discipline qua discipline.” Bringing together scholars from multiple fields, Transforming English Studies offers polyvocal and transformative approaches to field-wide reform that go beyond preserving the disciplinary status quo. Instead, the contributors to this collection are distinguished by their insightful interrogation of the discipline’s seemingly mundane assumptions, their respect for how local contexts influence reform, and their acknowledgement of the diversity of our (inter)discipline.

Language is means of communication. It is considered the tool used by human to express or transfer the message by speaking. In globalization era, people speak more than one language such as multilingual or at least billingual. Madurese people usually used Madurese and Indonesian to speak w ith others in their daily life. It's experience code mixing which interfereces of mother tongue to second language. The aim of the article are to find the categories of code mixing occure among the students, to anal yze the form of code mixing and to identify the factors of code mixing that used. The research design is qualitative approach, especially in descriptive qualitative method. There are some ways to collect the data. The data collection whi ch used are observation, interview and documentation. There are four steps in data analysis; identi fying, classifying, anal yzing and draw ing a conclusion. The result are there are nineteen categories of code mixing such as; recording. The form of code mixing used are; code mixing in the form of insertion, phrase insertion and repetition w ords. The reason why students used code mixing are the different background envi ronment, students acquired more than one language, the incompetence of students to master more than one language, formal and informal situation, and the habitual of teacher when he or she explained the materials.

Cognitivist approaches to learning languages have transformed the way educators look at the complex journey of learning a foreign language by bringing new dimensions to this field. For years, behaviourism in psychology and structuralism in linguistics dominated views on how language, language learning and the learner should be perceived. Yet, exploration of the learner’s mental processes has unveiled a whole universe of capacities and strategies learners bring to their learning. As a case in point, this paper reports on a set of studies on strategies used by students at the University of Blida 2, Algeria. Effective learners employ strategies to perform learning tasks and achieve better attainment. The purpose of the present study was to examine EFL learners’ use of a selection of cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies. The researcher used seven research tools (analysis of the subjects’ course grades, classroom discourse analysis via direct observation of authentic lectures and analysis of class audio recordings, a test of lecture comprehension, a test of listening comprehension, analysis of the subjects’ lecture notes, two survey questionnaires for students and one for teachers and an analysis of instruction in listening and note taking in the English Department). These tools were used to triangulate the strategies the subjects use particularly in areas of academic listening and note-taking. The Findings seem to suggest that, although most of the subjects reported using efficient, many of them were using less efficient strategies. The role of teachers in fostering efficient and less efficient strategies has been examined. The data point to the possibility that teachers may be using some strategies that could foster less efficient learner strategies. Some suggestions are offered to help more students develop better cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies that will ultimately enable them to learn more efficiently.

This book explores the global spread of English and its ramifications for the status of English in Morocco. It sheds light on motivational issues in English language teaching and learning in Moroccan higher education and examines various teaching practices in terms of: teaching effectiveness, assessment and evaluation, written feedback, English-Arabic translation, and undergraduate supervision. In addition to identifying critical issues in the discipline of English studies and the main challenges facing English departments from historical, institutional, and pedagogical perspectives, it suggests strategies for addressing and overcoming them.

Finding jobs is an important issue that many university graduates worry about. Even when economy is booming, many graduates fail to find a job related to their university training for years after their graduation. In return for big financial investments, universities are expected to prepare young citizens to fit into existing jobs as well as create new ones. The aim of this paper is to explore the contribution of universities to training students in skills that could increase their employability. This paper reports on a study conducted in the context of departments of English in various Algerian universities. The focus of this research is exploring teachers’ agendas towards and their contribution to developing key employability requirements in their students. A questionnaire was used to tap into their attitudes and practices vis-à-vis developing students’ employability. It was administered to one-hundred and thirty-five teachers from English departments in twenty-eight Algerian universities. Twenty-seven teachers from fifteen universities completed the questionnaire. The analysis of the data indicates that many teachers either seem to lack awareness about employability skills or place these low on their agenda. These findings are turned into some suggestions to increase university graduates’ employability.
