Astrometric properties of images obtained using MSCRED IRAF software package are investigated. CCD observations of M35 open cluster were taken in an observation run between October 10 and 17, 2004 at Belogradchick Observatory (Bulgaria) using the 60cm Cassegrain telescope endowed with a 1kX1k Apogee 47P CCD camera, ensuring to a field size of 6.16 square minutes, with a scale of 0.722arcsec/pixel in 2X2 binned mode. Dithered images are resampled and reansambled into a single larger image for which the World Coordinate System (WCS) solution is recomputed and investigated.

The Caviar software package for the astrometric reduction of Cassini ISS images: description and examplesAims. Caviar is a software package designed for the astrometric measurement of natural satellite positions in images taken using the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) of the Cassini spacecraft. Aspects of the structure, functionality, and use of the software are described, and examples are provided. The integrity of the software is demonstrated by generating new measurements of the positions of selected major satellites of Saturn, 2013–2016, along with their observed minus computed (O−C) residuals relative to published ephemerides. Methods. Satellite positions were estimated by fitting a model to the imaged limbs of the target satellites. Corrections to the nominal spacecraft pointing were computed using background star positions based on the UCAC5 and Tycho2 star catalogues. UCAC5 is currently used in preference to Gaia-DR1 because of the availability of proper motion information in UCAC5. Results. The Caviar package is available for free download. We present results of a pilot investigation on the astrometry of International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) sources using small- to medium-sized telescopes and the second US Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC2). For this purpose, 31 ICRF sources were observed, mostly south of the equator, during 1997–2000. We used the automated 0.6 and 1.6 m Cassegrain telescopes equipped with CCD detectors located at Laborato´ rio Nacional de Astrofı´sica, Brazil. The source positions were referred to UCAC2, with fainter 0.6 m telescope stars serving as a reference frame to the reductions of the 1.6 m telescope CCD fields. Observations were made in the V band in a compromise between the 579–643 nm bandpass (between V and R) of UCAC2 and the bluer ICRF sources. To ensure that UCAC2, with its magnitude bandpass system, is a reliable reference catalog for our V-band CCD frame reductions, we have also compared it against an independent set of star positions with similar characteristics obtained in the V band with the Valinhos CCDMeridian Circle, Brazil. Average values and errors for the opticalradio position offsets using the 0.6 m telescope were +4 8 mas (41 mas) and +1 8 mas (42 mas) for right ascension and declination, respectively. (Parenthetical values refer to standard deviation, i.e., to the typical error of a single measurement given the quantity of sources.) For the 1.6 m telescope, offsets were 12 9 mas (45mas) and +8 9mas (46mas). An expected random error that increases with magnitude and affects the positions of the fainter 0.6 m telescope secondary stars is verified. No systematic errors were found within the attained position precision, including differential color refraction. External comparisons with independent telescope/catalog sets of precise source positions were also made, showing consistent results within the respective errors.

The current status of astrometry in Astro-WISE is explored. This includes the underlying mechanisms, procedures, performance, and accuracies of both the local and the global astrometric solution, as well as the improvement from the local to the global solution. Using all currently Astro-WISE processed data from the WFI instrument on the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope (24512 frames, more than 3000 exposures), we show that the overall accuracies are consistent with and due to the precision of the USNO-A2.0 reference catalog (0.3 arcsec RMS and 1 arcsec systematic) for the local solution and are approximately 0.04 arcsec for the global solution. In addition, it is found that the precision of the underlying software (SExtractor, LDAC, SWarp) in extracting sources, applying solutions, and regridding frames to 0.200 arcsec per pixel is of the order 0.02 arcsec RMS. The performance of the local solution has a virtually 100% success rate with respect to the underlying software, a 98.0% success rate...

The astrometric application of the Wide Field Camera and the Planetary Camera is reviewed. It is shown that the digital image centering algorithms can yield a positional accuracy of 0.1 milli-arcsecond. Deconvolution of CCD's sensitivity, non-flatness of the filters, and crinkling of the CCD surface may limit the positional accuracy to 1 milli-arcsecond.
