The aim of this article is to show a detailed overview of latest archaeological works in one part of Tarragona's port area. During the Visigothic period the harbour of Tarracona, ancient city of Tarraco, the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis, became the main urban and economic asset and the results there obtained provide us a better knowledge than in the rest of the late city. We have identified a productive and exchange zone, possibly belonging to the Visigoth cataplus and integrated in the Mediterranean trade networks. Their evidences show a great constructive activity and urban renovation, especially between the second half of VIIIth and the first half of VIIIth centuries. There were five buildings where bi-functional spaces to be found, with workshops to foundry and manufacture both metal objects and glass; while in other rooms domestic spaces were developed. The interest of the instrumentum domesticum related transport, cooking and foods consumption lies not only in its chronology, but also in the fact that it reflects the latest products marketed in the western Mediterranean, as well as the ethnographic evolution of coarse pottery. It was a strong space of exchange in which an important numismatic set has recovered. Consequently, we are defining, for het first time, a faithful material culture of Tarracona city before and during the arrival of Islam in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Habitar en los suburbia portuarios de la Antigüedad tardía: el caso de Tarraco (Hispania Tarraconensis)Although many archaeological excavations have been carried out in the area of the Roman port of Tarraco, specific and detailed studies of this large sector of the city are still required. The aim of this paper is to analyse and define the urban evolution of the port suburb, with special regard to the occupancy patterns during Late Antiquity (3rd-8th centuries). In broad terms, after the urban contraction of the 3rd and 4th centuries, the 5th century sees a new period of urban and economic growth a development that is also attested in the centuries that follow, calling into question previous interpretations that considered the 7th century a period of decline that culminated in the Arab and Berber invasion in 713.

Buscando el siglo VIII en el puerto de Tarracona: entre la residualidad y el desconocimientoThe latest archaeological finds in Tarragona port area have provided new data that it must have an effect in the problematic disappearance of visigothic Tarracona before the irruption of early al-Andalus (c. 713-714). This article focuses on the difficulty of establishing chronological dates based on pottery deposits study. Its coastal situation facilitated the importation of numerous Mediterranean products but the absence of satisfactory knowledge prevents its temporal characterization, as well as the identification of the disappearance of the city.

Ad suburbanum Tarraconis. Del área portuaria al conjunto eclesiástico del FrancolíThe discovery of the so-called "Necropolis Paleocristiana" in the 1930s opened a new line of research on the late antique suburban areas of Tarraco. The further finding of another Christian basilica in the 1990s completed the picture of the "Francolí early-Christian complex" just as it is known today. However, the many archaeological excavations carried out also in the 1990s within the framework of the urbanisation of the southern area of the current city, led to the finding of a great suburban sector of the Roman city next to the early-Christian complex. This suburban sector – which was linked to the port and extended more than 2ha – was hitherto only partially known and lacked a joint study. The thorough study of the late antique phase of this suburban sector allows us now to note the clear correlation between the urban growth of the suburb from the early fifth century onwards and the development of the early-Christian complex at the very same moment. Thus, despite the religious element, it appears evident that the choice of location of the early-Christian complex cannot be detached from the fact that, as the port suburb of the city, this sector was the economic hub of Tarraco, even during the late antique period.

Actividades productivas y "espacios domésticos" en el poblado prehistórico de Karoline (Costa Atlántica de Nicaragua)Population and space organization: the Pyrenean Tarraconensis in the sixth century The donation and will of Vicente of Asán, dating from AD 551 and 576 respectively, are two basic documents concerning the property structure in the Visigothic period. These documents have been subjected to specialised research for nearly a century; however, the exact location of the toponyms contained in them –a fundamental point for a full understanding of the structure of Vicente's properties– remains an unsolved question. This paper tackles this problem, combining archaeological field work with the historical review of the document, as well as the study of mediaeval documentation in order to trace the survival of sixth century toponyms in the subsequent period. We can now identify with certainty approximately 50% of minor toponyms, which makes possible a historical analysis of how Vicente of Asán's patrimony was organised. His centre of interest is clearly located in the Pyrenean area of Huesca, in the La Fueva and Boltaña valleys (the ancient terrae terrantonensis and boletana of the document). Later the patrimony also included land along the Esera and Cinca valleys, reaching even the Ebro valley, with properties in the territories of Barbotum, Labitolosa, Ilerda and Caesaraugusta. From this we can infer a complementary economy between the lands on the valleys of the main rivers and the mountain areas, which allowed diversification of production and better exploitation of resources. Cattle raising was an important activity, and there was short-distance seasonal transhumance. Furthermore, the reconstruction of microtoponymy allows us, first, to define with some detail the borders of the urban territories mentioned by the texts, and second, to detect that the lines of inner mediaeval colonisation followed those documented for the Visigothic period.
