The article has seven parts. Part 1 outlines how the term "Copper Age" was established, and then (part 2) how this gave rise to the idea that society was shaped by metallurgy. Part 3 criticizes the idea that early metallurgy produced social changes. Part 4 discusses the climatic shift from Atlantic to the Subboreal and shows that the ice-mummy from the Tisenjoch (south Tirol) was preserved because of this change. The fifth part evaluates whether in the Iberian Peninsula certain aspects of cultural evolution (intensified warfare, fortifications, and irrigation) can be linked to the climatic changes at that time. Part 6 is about water storage and enclosures. The last part (7) discusses whether the development of elites was caused by these environmental shifts and suggests that metal was adopted to display the status of these elites.
