Žarko B. Veljković, Dragan Ilić-Pisum, Is Ptolemy’s Serbinon an Ancient Serbian Town? Summary: The last three decades in Serbia have witnessed the revival of the romantic, pseudoscientific, so-called ‘national’ history stream, whose latest claim is that Serbs are the indigenous inhabitants of the Danube Basin and the Balkans. Indeed, it is contended that they are Proto-Indoeuropeans in their Proto-Homeland, and that the Serbian language is the ancestor of all Indo-European languages. Bereft of scientific arguments and based on kling-klang etymologies, these pseudohistorians become pseudoetymologists as well, claiming that Ptolemy’s reference to the town Serbinon in Pannonia proves the Serbian existence in the Danube Basin and the Balkans already in antiquity. This ‘Proto-Serbian’ etymology, however, is thoroughly refuted by serious scientific and etymological evidence, which reveals that Serbinon is in fact a Pannonian Illyrian oeconym, *Sérbinom, meaning approximately ‘the location of a water source, a gorge with rushing water, water hollow’ or ‘the gorgelike entrance into a pit or a cave, abyss’, or, better yet, ‘the location of a spring or (?) river spring or – thermal spring’. The oeconym itself is built from the Indo-European root *serbh- ‘sip, swallow; drop, drip; craw; gorgelike entrance into a pit or a cave, abyss’ and the Illyrian oeconym suffix -inom as in *Altinom (*Altinon, Altinum) and elsewhere. According to the coordinates given in Ptolemy’s Geography, this oeconym is to be located approximately in the area of the Hungarian town Villánykövesd or of the Croatian towns Cabuna or Gradina, both near Virovitica close to the Croatian border with Hungary.

Landlord technology—or the systems used by landlords to control and regulate tenant lives, spaces, and data—frequently promises “frictionless” building management and residential experiences. Yet services such as “digital doormen” and virtual property management platforms often create more work for tenants, particularly regarding decreased accessibility for tenants of color whose faces are unrecognized by biased algorithms used to administer building access, and for renters who are unable to or who refuse to use new apps and web portals. There are also “digital butlers” that landlords deploy as a means of attracting and retaining wealthy residents, yet that end up creating increased and often gendered work for those laboring behind the curtains of automation. Even virtual property management tools rely upon outsourced labor and are rife with contradictions and hardships for renters and call center workers alike. With a proposition that new forms of material and affective labor are created by landlord technologies despite promises of frictionless living, this article focuses on the various struggles that workers and tenants face in using, maintaining, refusing, and, at times, organizing against property automation. Based upon collaborative research produced with Landlord Tech Watch, as well as ethnographic accounting of housing and labor struggles in New York City and Cluj, this article introduces friction as a critical analytic useful in assessing the uneven, gendered, and racialized labor formations that landlord technologies require and reproduce despite fictions of frictionless living.

This study aimed to assess auditory and visual selective attention among primary school-aged children diagnosed with dysgraphia using a multidimensional dysgraphia test. The test included dimensions for measuring visual and auditory selective attention, taking into account gender as a variable. A sample of 100 primary school children participated in the study. Data collection and analysis were performed using SPSS software. The study employed an experimental curriculum designed specifically for this investigation. The findings indicated a significant correlation between visual selective attention and dysgraphia, highlighting gender differences as influential factors. Moreover, the study identified a relationship between auditory attention and dysgraphia, with implications potentially linked to gender variability. This research contributes to the understanding of how auditory and visual selective attention relate to dysgraphia in children, underscoring the impact of gender in these cognitive processes. Further exploration of these associations could offer insights into tailored interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive abilities in children with dysgraphia.

This paper presents a Matlab code to implement the three-field floating projection topology optimization (FPTO) method using the linear material interpolation scheme. The material penalization scheme in the traditional element-based topology optimization approaches makes an optimal solution being close to 0/1 to avoid handling a large number of 0/1 constraints of the design variables. Instead, the implicit floating projection constraint in the FPTO method numerically simulates 0/1 constraints of the design variables so that even a linear material interpolation scheme can be employed. By gradually tightening 0/1 constraints, more and more design variables are pushed to 0/1 until an optimized element-based design with a clear topology is accurately represented by a smooth design. The implicit floating projection constraint provides a numerical engine for topology optimization, which is fundamentally different from the physical engine by material penalization. The Matlab code in this p...

Evidence has been accumulated for over a century indicating that the visual system of humans and many animals is more sensitive to contour stimulation at vertical or horizontal orientations than oblique orientations. However, the neural basis for this orientation anisotropy is still a subject of debate. In the present study, we recorded brain activity over the parietal-occipital and frontal lobes with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) when human participants were presented with gratings in different orientations. The oblique gratings induced a much larger change in the oxygenated hemoglobin concentration than vertical and horizontal gratings in the left occipital lobe. However, we did not find any significant orientation anisotropy in the frontal lobe. Our study showed that different quantitative changes in the hemoglobin concentrations occurred in response to differently oriented stimuli in the visual cortex and that fNIRS could potentially be a valuable tool in the ass...
