Agriculture sector is the single largest contributor to the national income (GDP) contributing nearly 21 percent to the GDP and provides employment to nearly 43 percent of the workforce and supplies raw material to the industrial sector (notably textile industry) of Pakistan. Credit is an important tool for getting the inputs in time increasing thereby the productivity of the farms particularly those of small ones. The current study was designed to investigate the problems faced by the farmers while getting the loan. It was found that the small farmers faced a lot of problems in getting and returning the loan which must be removed to get better results and hence improving the quality and quantity of the agricultural products.
Agricultural sector is the largest contribution to Pakistan’s GDP. Agricultural credit plays an important role in enhancing the agricultural productivity in developing countries like Pakistan. The government of Pakistan introduced several agricultural credit loans through ZTBL and other commercial banks and institutional sources. This study estimated constrains faced by the farmers in acquisitioned source. This study also estimated the impact of credit on agricultural productivity. Data were collected randomly from 30 loanee farmers to three selected ZTBL branches and 30 non loanee farmers in the same villages. It found that the credit has a positive impact on the agricultural productivity and loanee farmers have more gross margins than non loanee farmers. Now the problem is to remove the constraints which small farmers are facing in this regard and then improve the utilization of the credit amount as planned at the time of disbursement in agriculture production process following findings were found. A major proportion i.e.40.8% of the farmers belonged to young age group (36-45 years). It was found that majority of the respondents had low level of education in the selected area. More than 51.7% of the respondents had 6-10 acres of the land holding. A huge majority 95% of the respondents had knowledge about the agricultural credit scheme of the ZTBL Bank. More than 56.75 of the loanees’ farmers avail credit facilities for the first time from the ZTBL bank. A large majority 63.3 of the farmers were not satisfied with the interest rate charged by the banks. It was found that a large number of farmers mutualized the credit amount. About 66.7% farmers got agricultural credit facility from bank without facing any problem. Result indicates that average cultivated area in case of loanee farmers is higher than non-loanee farmers. It was conclude that the loanee farmers had more cost of production as compare to non loanee farmers. Results of regression analysis indicate that credit had very normal impact on agricultural productivity as limiting factors is the proper utilization of loan mount in agricultural sector. This study was designed under the project "Enhancing Food Security and Resilience of Small Farmers in Sindh and Baluchistan provinces of Pakistan" with the support European Commission and Oxfam GB to review the issues faced by the small growers in accessing credit from the formal sources of credit. The overall objective of the study was to analyze the current situation of the small farmers and difficulties they face in accessing credit; particularly women headed and managed households in project areas of district Dadu, Sanghar and Musakheal. The specific objectives were: • To review the existing agriculture credit in Pakistan and its importance in the growth of agriculture sector (Credit Policy review and Role of Agriculture Credit Advisory committee etc) • To review and analyze the agricultural credit policies in Pakistan and its impact on small farmers • State bank role in agricultural credit and how has been improved so far in Pakistan • To review and assess agriculture credit schemes of different banks /institutes in Sindh and Baluchistan • To study problems/issues related to agriculture credit schemes in Pakistan specifically in Sindh and Baluchistan • To suggest solutions /reforms for improving the agriculture credit system and mechanism in Pakistan
The goal of this study is to delve the historical trends of agricultural credit flows from formal banking and informal sector to Pakistani farmers. Both sector played an indispensable role in credit disbursement, but recently formal sector take the lead in credit provision. Various commercial banks, specialized bank like ZaraiTaraqiati bank and micro finance banks provide substantial amount of agriculture credit, but their percent augmentation to agriculture credit remain static. It also subsume discussion concerning obstacles involved in agricultural credit disbursement, additionally it impart some policy recommendation that will dwindle the impediments face by farmers.
