Em linhas gerais, o funcionalismo sustenta que a sociedade é um todo coerente formado por partes interdependentes, cada qual realizando uma ou mais funções para o ajustamento da totalidade. Como método amplo, diferentes domínios do conhecimento se valem do funcionalismo, como a economia, a arquitetura, a psicologia, entre outros. Na sociologia e na antropologia especificamente, a função social, categoria central para essa vertente, designa a relação desempenhada pelas pelas unidades do sistema social (instituições, normas, valores, grupos etc.) para sua manutenção e integração, a partir da metáfora do organismo vivo, proveniente das ciências biológicas e áreas afins. O funcionalismo privilegia a perspectiva sincrônica, afeita à compreensão das relações sociais de uma estrutura social em um dado momento de tempo.
