11th Annual North American Waste-to-Energy Conference, 2003
Environmental Pollution, 2018
Due to the growth in demand for construction works in Brazil, there has been an increase in waste generation. In order to investigate if the contamination of wood waste in construction sites could represent an environmental risk, field surveys observing qualitative and quantitative aspects were conducted. Analysis of wood waste from six construction sites in the city of Curitiba, Brazil, allowed for the infer that the most frequently found contaminants were mortar and metal pins at 59%, and that 64% of the samples were contaminated with more than two contaminants. As disposal solution, all the studied cases use potteries to discard its wood wastes. A worrying result is that 18% of samples were contaminated by a release agent-ink or varnish. These samples possibly could have been burned in potteries without an effective air pollution control. Another conclusion of the survey is that the waste management in the construction site is usually promoted by a layperson.
