La contrarreforma impuso en los creyentes la preocupación por alcanzar una “buena muerte”, en que el sacerdote que les impartía los sacramentos y el escribano que redactaba su testamento desempeñaban un rol de acompañamiento primordial. La progresiva barroquización de los rituales, que iría transformando las prácticas funerarias y las actitudes colectivas frente a la muerte, pudo apreciarse en Buenos Aires en forma todavía modesta en el siglo XVII, pero se volvió impactante en el período virreinal, cuando acompañó el acelerado crecimiento económico y demográfico de la ciudad.
