This thesis aims at studying the typology and design of a university campus in depth by also documenting personal learnings through the design of a new campus of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Delhi. This thesis is not only an individual attempt of leaning and understanding a new typology, but also to create a set of guidelines and an established direction for any reader, designing a university campus. The proposition of this thesis is explore and understand the architectural typology of a university campus by proposing a design for an upcoming campus of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University at Sector 3-Rohini, Delhi. The image of the university's architecture and building forms should convey long term stability while encouraging an atmosphere for creative thinking. The majority of campus buildings should work essentially as groupings or compositions rather than as individual buildings both functionally and aesthetically. The architectural style of new buildings may vary to reflect current technology and program accommodation. Any such innovations, however, must maintain a harmonious, aesthetic connection with existing campus structures. In undertaking the requisite planning and design tasks, several considerations are paramount to the guidance of the design concepts, including, a consistent use of the principles of design order, such as building orientation, scale, massing and proportion. There should be an appropriate response to the campus context through respect for the protection of views, setbacks-and development patterns described in the Master Plan. It should also accommodate a meaningful commitment to design strategies which embrace sustainability.

It is one of the major residential districts in the region with some very major institutional and public facilities of the city. Sector 3 houses the district commercial centre and it dominated by institutional building. This sector is also seeing the construction of an upcoming metro line, which is adjacent to the highway and in near vicinity to the site. The site (as designated by the master plan) is a public and semi public facility type. The site is circumferenced by institutional areas up-to about 2 km and then the entire context is evenly divided into residential and their respective retail areas. It was concluded that because the entire site is a combination of two plots the road can be included in the site details. The next step was to analyse the role and placement of the road on an urban level. Upon closer observation, the author realised that the road is not establishing any strong connections on an urban level. The changed location of the road on either side is further determined as per the design needs in the coming iterations. The largest institutional plots are the site and it’s adjoining district centre which the ‘Seven Seas Hotel’ and various individual retail plots in the centre. 03 Site Study Analysis and Inferences In context as well as precinct is made up of even texture and fine grain when studied in the Nolli’s diagram. The context has a good blend of commercial spaces and public transport. 2. The site lies in the heart of a major residential district. The campus will have auditorium, convention centre, seminar and conference facilities, library, cafeterias, students centre, indoors and outdoors sports facilities, guest-house, health centre, display and performance areas, convenience/utility centre and crèche. 3. Shape and the immediate context of the site posed no hinderer in design exploration. 1. Abscence of any other major educational campus in the precinct. The University had initiated an interactive process to ascertain the needs and ideas of all the stakeholders of the campus. 2. Strong residential context makes it a challenge to develop a brand new identity of the design. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University new campus at Rohini Sector 3 Delhi is a live project released in the year 2018. WEAKNESS OPPORTUNITIES SITE DETAILS The site is spread over 7.3 hectares (18 acres) in Rohini Sector 3, North-West Delhi. There are no overhead power lines on the plot and the site is free from all encumbrances. The site is well connected to the city through multiple modes of transit. The Outer Ring Road is at a distance of approx. 1 km and there are two metro stations (i.e. Madhuban Chowk and Rohini East) in the proximity of the site for campus. The external roads and other services like sewerage and storm water drainage have already been laid in Rohini. All services in AUD campus would be connected to the external services. 03 Site Study Analysis and Inferences 1. Neighbouring retail and commercial building add to the increased value of the site. 2. The residential land-use and its supporting facilities cater to the families residing in the campus. THREATS 1. Upcoming metro adjacent to the site might transform the location into a major retail location. It is also a part of the Western Yamuna Canal hence determine the slope and terrain of that region. The district of Rohini is seeing the growth of public transport and recreational facilities owing to its increasing population. This makes the location of the site an important hub of educational. The university project has been taken up in phases. The total built up was divided in various land-use depending on the control laid by the Master Plan and Delhi Bye-laws. Further the phasing areas and requirements were laid as per the university norms and guidelines. The basement and parking areas aren’t inclded in the built up. Similarly the sports fields and related indoor facilities like the swimming pool area are free of FAR as per the Delhi bye-laws. As per the ‘Request for proposal’ released by Ambekdar University the broad built-up areas of the facilities was given.
