There is a theoretical-methodological question: according to the traditional subdivision between urban survey and architectural survey, whether there might be a third dimension represented by the relief of the building fabric. Without prejudice to the essential uniqueness of the method, it can be said that the survey of the building fabric poses on a intermediate dimension – not only physical but conceptual and logical – between architectural and urban survey, with a precise connotation regarding the urban block and its historical and typological values.

Aim of the paper is a reflection on the concept of Historical Town and on the issues in its surveying. The background is analyzed to state the more significant topics and to trace an operational line of study. The point of view is the historical-critical methodology for architectural analysis. The urban heritage is seen as a work of art made by the sylloge of architectures and urban spaces, defined by the modification and stratifications processes occurred during centuries. In particular the values of the urban heritage roots on a “relational” system; it can be studied with historical synchronic and diachronic interpretations and values’ judgments, useful to make evident the current characteristics, i.e. what we have to preserve.

The evolution of cities can be interpreted through graphic elements, as recommended by Marco Pollio Vitruvius (1st century BC), whose forms of expression (plans, elevations and perspectives) are revealed as precious and reliable instruments to read the cities. Establishing mapping elements, they appear as representing cities and in various stages of construction of their urban networks. The iconography is an important element of analysis that allows a careful reading of the "reality" of cities at speci c times. In addition to understanding them as representative of static moments, they allow the current reinterpretation of the urban fabric. Adding new elements may be important in reading the cities, which are considered as dynamic tools for its understanding. Regarding cartography and iconography of various eras, we propose to make a comparative analysis of the historical urban fabric of two cities with deployment capabilities and differentiated urban development (Évora and Setúbal). To achieve our goals, we will read the morphological elements of the Medieval City (forti cation, street, square, medieval blocks; market; singular buildings) and its iconography in order to understand its diachronic evolution between their similarities and differences.

Cartography and iconography as diachronic analysis tools of the urban fabric ─ Évora and Setúbal2018 •
Visual and morphological characteristics are signifi cant in the evaluation of the inherited city image, but incomplete without systematisation and exploration of the adequate values. The effectiveness of design and rehabilitation depends on the structural and morphological information of the urban fabric: the proposed typological system emerges from an organizing structure in urban development and renewal. The study aims to examine the inherited urban spatial system of Hungary (1867-1918), in order to present and define an aesthetical heritage evaluation through a typo-morphology of the structural changes. Determination of the typology of the selected settlements’ urban fabric is the basis of the analysis, as-built heritage as an important and valued part of the contemporary urban fabric in the context of the wider aesthetic values.

Tradition and Modernity. The Historiography of the Survey on Regional Architecture / Alexandra Cardoso and Maria Helena MaiaIn this paper we intend to make a first approach on the historiography of the Survey on Regional Architecture in Portugal, in an attempt to understand how it relates to the historical and critical interpretation that its authors created, as well as to identify its divergences and convergences with current historiography. With the study of the survey and its subsequent publication titled Popular Architecture in Portugal (1961), we pretend intend also to understand how its existence was used in the construction of the critical discourse about the links between tradition and modernity in the context of Portuguese modern architecture evolution.
