Abstract: One of the main questions that theories about Semitic verbal morphology aim to answer concerns the relationship between verbs with different but related meanings that share the same phonological root but appear in different templates. The goal of this paper is to shed some light on this broader question by considering the so-called “reciprocal verbs” (rec-predicates), i.e., verbs with certain morphology that allegedly encodes reciprocal relations. Such verbs often appear in the T-templates, across the Semitic languages, thus this paper would like to examine their relation to other verbs with the same root. All previous analyses of verbal reciprocals assume that rec-predicates are at some level of analysis derivatives of more basic-predicates. Furthermore, most of the reciprocals in Hebrew are in the T-template, and the assumption in various theories about verbs in this template is that they are derivative of functions, that have as their input either the root or verbs in other templates. This paper argues that there is no grammatical relation between rec-predicates and other transitive verbs in the same root, by pointing out problems with previous derivational analyses, by analyzing the argument structure of these predicates and by providing a semantic account for the various readings the rec-constructions have. The differences between the current proposal and the previous ones follow from the fact that the current analysis does not consider the rec-predicate to be an encoding of reciprocal/symmetric relations and offer, therefore, an alternative portrayal of the relationship between them and the symmetric events they denote. Since previous studies on the morphology of the templates pay only little attention to the verbal expressions of reciprocity, the goal of this paper is to see what theories concerning the morphology of the templates in Modern Hebrew would have to account for with respect to these verbs. Deadjectival nominalizations: suffix rivalry and synonymy2015 •
In this paper, I focus on French nominalizations that originate from the same adjective through the addition of different suffixes: the semantic relationship among these formations is analyzed, and the conclusion is reached that the suffixes involved in the nominalization of adjectives are not in rivalry, nor in distribution but in alternation.
Morphology, by its very language-specific nature, poses conceptual, methodological and empirical problems for both linguistic theory and language typology. This chapter offers an overview of major issues in morphological typology, starting with the controversial definitions of basic notions such as “wordform” and “lexeme”, and proceeding to the classification of morphological phenomena along the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes. It is argued that traditional dichotomies such as “inflection” vs. “derivation” or “agglutination” vs. “flexion” are to by replaced by multidimensional classifications based on a broad empirical coverage of morphological phenomena attested in human languages, and that only through a mutually informed fruitful interaction of typologists and morphological theorists an adequate cross-linguisticaly valid and analytically sophisticated model of morphology can be attained.

Joao Paulo Lazzarini Cyrino, Paula Roberta Gabbai Armelin and Rafael Dias Minussi (On the encyclopedic knowledge of gender) give an analysis of gender in Brazilian Portuguese within the framework of Distributed Morphology. They propose that gender is situated in the Encyclopedia and cite evidence from cases of gender mismatch and structural coercion.

This volume is the first handbook devoted entirely to the multitude of frameworks adopted in the field of morphology, including Minimalism, Optimality Theory, Network Morphology, Cognitive Grammar, and Canonical Typology. Following an introduction from the editors, the first part of the volume offers critical discussions of the main theoretical issues within morphology, both in word formation and in inflection, as well as providing a short history of morphological theory. In the core part of the handbook, part II, each theory is introduced by an expert in the field, who guides the reader through its principles and technicalities, its advantages and disadvantages, and its points of agreement and disagreement with alternative theories. Chapters in part III explore the bigger picture, connecting morphological theory to other subdisciplines of linguistics, such as diachronic change, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and sign language theory. The handbook is intended as a guide for morphologists from all theoretical backgrounds who want to learn more about frameworks other than their own, as well as for linguists in related subfields looking for theoretical connections with the field of morphology.

Exaptation from Arabic syntax to Persian lexical morphology2008 •
Explains the origin, rationale, and distribution of the word endings –at and –eh (-ah) which are alternate forms of the same distinctive ending in grammatically feminine Arabic words adopted into Persian (e.g., nuqta ‘point’, turbat ‘tomb’). This striking feature was long taken for granted by users of Persian, Turkish, Urdu, etc., and appears not to have been subjected to a successful rationale until the present work (see below under Further References, esp. 1991 book). The study provides examples of the forms incorporated into the langages of the central Islamic sprachbund and their role in derivational morphology..
