Hdt. 4.79 διεπρήστευσεThis paper examines the form διεπρήστευσε, obelized in the editions of Herodotus. There have been two ways of interpreting the form: some scholars have taken it to refer to an act of speech, while others have sought here a verb of motion. Both groups of scholars proposed a variety of conjectures, some of them addenda lexicis and none of them commanding immediate acceptance. After a review of various solutions that have been proposed to-date, this paper argues in favor of retaining the reading of the paradosis and analyzing (-)πρηστεύω as a verb of quick motion. The verb is argued to be an Ionic colloquialism (or even Herodotus' own Augenblicksbildung), derived from the root of πίμπρημι in its original meaning 'to blow' (of which 'to burn' is a secondary development) via an agent noun πρηστήρ / *πρήστης, cf. μνηστεύω 'woo' : μνηστήρ 'suitor' or δυναστεύω 'hold power' : δυνάστης 'person with power'. The proposed translation 'blasted, dashed' is supported by typological parallels for the semantic development 'to blow' → 'to move (impetuously)' , such as Old English blaéstan 'to blow; to move impetuously' or Russian dut' 'to blow; to dash, to rush'. Interestingly, Hittite (parip)parāi-, the cognate of Gk. πίμπρημι, may show the same semantic development: 'to blow' , 'to ignite fire by blowing' > 'to move swiftly' .

Background Though the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations were advanced for their time and offered their citizens certain comforts and pleasures, the people were powerless against ever-present threats of devastating floods, severe droughts, and belligerent neighbors who sought "the good life" in the Tigris and Euphrates Valley. It is no wonder, then, that the religious beliefs of the ancient Mesopotamians were somewhat pessimistic. The people worshipped a pantheon, or family, of unpredictable gods and goddesses who could bring about misfortune as well as favor. Regardless of one's status or how one lived one's life, there was no joyful afterlife to look forward to. The end of life offered no consolation, only emptiness. These beliefs are evident in the epic, as the hero Gilgamesh, in spite of his great powers, suffers a life-changing loss. When the person who means the most to him dies, the proud Gilgamesh must come to terms with the new reality that he will not live forever. And because in the Sumerian view, death offers only emptiness, Gilgamesh rebels against it, and sets off on a quest to attain immortality. Characters: Anu: the god of the heavens; the father-god Ea: the god of wisdom; usually a friend to humans Enkidu: Gilgamesh's friend; a wild man whom the gods created out of clay Enlil: the god of the air, the wind, and the earth Gilgamesh: the king of Uruk and the epic's hero Ishtar: the goddess of love and war; the queen of heaven Ninurta: the god of war and of irrigation Shamash: a god associated with the sun and human laws Siduri: goddess of wine and brewing Urshanabi: the ferryman who travels daily across the sea of death to the home of Utnapishtim Utnapishtim: the survivor of a flood sent by the gods to destroy humanity; the gods granted him eternal life The epic opens with an introduction to Gilgamesh, king of the city-state of Uruk. Gilgamesh, who is two-thirds god and one-third man, is handsome, courageous, and powerful. But he is also arrogant, and he continually oversteps his bounds as a ruler. His people, upset over the liberties Gilgamesh takes with them, pray to the gods for relief. In response, the gods send a match for Gilgamesh: the wild man Enkidu, reared by wild animals and unfamiliar with civilization. When the two men meet, they engage in a fierce wrestling match, which Gilgamesh wins. But the two men become close friends, and Enkidu, now civilized, joins Gilgamesh on a series of adventures. First they destroy Humbaba, the demon who guards the great Cedar Forest, and then they level the forest. When they dare to criticize the goddess Ishtar, who makes romantic overtures to Gilgamesh, she sends the Bull of Heaven to ravage the land as punishment. Gilgamesh and Enkidu destroy the bull. The gods cannot tolerate such disrespect, and they decree that one of the heroes must die. In this section of the epic, Enkidu has fallen mortally ill.

Juhász Péter: A steppe országútján a Kárpát-medencébe_On the Highway of the Steppe – Conquerors and conquered2019 •
On the Highway of the Steppe – Conquerors and conquered The goal of my issue is highlighting the contradictions of the traditional hypothesis of the Hungarian ethnogenesis. This hypothesis was elaborated with the tools of the linguistics, archaeology, history and ethnography, which did not have same emphasis by the researcher. I have formulated in five points the antagonism between the different conceptions in the disciplines. On the base of my remarks it seems is justifiable to revise the conception of the Turkish-Hungarian cohabitation in East Europe in the 5-9 Centuries. It is strengthened by the evidences of the reinterpretation of the role of the Avar population in the Carpathian Basin in the 6-9 Centuries by the newest research. It has become clear, that is the Avar population were settled and the Avar people had relatively developed agriculture. In the process of the formation of European Avar population had a determinative role those Oğur-Turkic tribes, which are participated in the Turkish-Hungarian cohabitation according to the Hungarian Turkology. The Oğur-Turkic tribes had a very significant role in the population of the Carpathian Basin in the time of the Hungarian Conquest, and they lived in that way of life which is draw by the Chuvash-Turkish loanwords of Hungarian language. Although the hypothesis of extinction or complete Slavicization be excluded, but the Avar people had a partial Turkic-Slavic bilingualism. The Hungarian tribes were assimilated with the Avar population in the Carpathian Basin after the Hungarian Conquest. The Hungarians were inherited the Avar life of way, culture and the tradition of the origin of the Avar gens. In same time the Hungarians transferred own language and political structure to the subjugated Avar people. This process is unimaginable in the East European steppe, because the Hungarians did not live there more than a half Century according to the written and archaeological sources. #Hungarian ethnogenesis #Hungarian Conquest #Turkish-Hungarian linguistic contacts #Avars

Ukraina: 30 lat bez ZSRR2021 •
The collapse of the Soviet Union was a momentous event for the entire world, but it was Soviet citizens for whom it was of the greatest importance. The fall of the USSR changed the geopolitical and economic map of the world and led to the emergence of fifteen new states. An independent Ukraine has become a significant component of this new geopolitical reality. The dissolution of the USSR gave the citizens of Ukraine a chance to build a sovereign state, consistent with the national interest, the state which could independently pursue its strategic goals in the area of domestic and foreign policy. Thirty years have passed since those events, which is a long enough time period to analyse changes made and to define how Ukraine has taken advantage of its historic opportunity. This paper examines the political and economic transformation of Ukraine, as well as the evolution of its foreign policy. The article also questions whether it is appropriate to compare the post-communist development of Ukraine to certain Central European countries. It also highlights the current attitude of the Ukrainian society towards the collapse of the USSR and to the Soviet past of this country.
