2022, Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe
Bernhard Sicherl & Rashida Hussein-Oglü (2022): Erwitte-Völlinghausen – verlorene Form statt verlorener Fundplatz. Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe 2021, 71-74. An archaeological watching brief during the construction of four new wind turbines on the Haarstrang mountain range north of Erwitte-Völlinghausen (distr. Soest) mainly brought to light rather inconspicuous features that were almost impossible to date. Four round, flat-bottomed »charcoal pits«, however, were clearly visible in the ground, thanks to the fire-reddened surrounding soil. Only during the postexcavation analysis (which revealed remains of ceramic moulds) did it become clear that these were the modest remains of a Late Bronze Age foundry – a rare discovery by north-western German standards and a unique one for Westphalia.

Cichy & Schierhold 2012 - Von Kollektiv- zu Einzelbestattungen – die Kreisgräben von Erwitte-Schmerlecke - AiW.pdfEva Cichy, Kerstin Schierhold, Von Kollektiv- zu Einzelbestattungen – die Kreisgräben von Erwitte-Schmerlecke. Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe 2011, 2012, 52-56 Geomagnetic surveying had brought to light concentric circular enclosures and other features in the immediate vicinity of the gallery graves at Schmerlecke, and several test excavations were mounted in 2009 and 2011 to determine their chronological position in relation to the known graves. The circular enclosures were found to be of a significantly later date, probably from the Final Neolithic period and Bronze Age. Another elongated oval feature turned out to be modern.

Die bronzezeitliche Deponierung von Wagenhausen/Etzwilen-Tättebüel TG2023 •
Stefan Di Staso, a volunteer metal detectorist, discovered a Late Bronze Age hoard on Tättebüel hill in the municipality of Wagenhausen. The assemblage comprises 47 objects weighing a total of 368.3 g. An EDX analysis carried out on the objects revealed that they were all made of tin bronze. The artefacts include two Binningen-type pins, two armlets, a sheet-metal bracelet, two wire pendants, a sheet-metal tube, six finger rings, a wire ring, six wire spirals, a ringed necklace, a pendant and an arrowhead. A subsequent excavation brought to light four coarse ware wall sherds. The composition of the assemblage is similar to that of other hoards found, for example, at Binningen BL, Belp BE Hohliebe, Löhningen SH or Bötzingen (D). They all date from the phase BzD2/HaA1, i.e. from the 13th to the 12th century BC

Geisendorf & Linnemann 2018 - Ein eisenzeitlicher Siedlungsplatz in Schwerte-Wandhofen - AiWM. Geisendorf & B. Linnemann (2018): Ein eisenzeitlicher Siedlungsplatz in Schwerte-Wandhofen. Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe 2017, 60-63. Archaeological examinations carried out at Schwerte-Wandhofen uncovered an Iron Age settlement site. A substantial granary building consisting of 18 posts and a larger than normal cooking pit stood out as being unusual for the region. No confirmed function can be ascribed to the site. see also: https://dguf.de/476.html

Von Kollektiv- zu Einzelbestattungen: die Kreisgräben von Erwitte-Schmerlecke2012 •
Excavations mounted in Erwitte-Schmerlecke have extended our knowledge of the megalithic record in Hesse and Westphalia in many different ways. New detailed insight was gained into the construction of collective graves, and a range of funerary offerings were uncovered that far exceeded those of any other compounds documented to date, with regard to both quantity and quality. The final analyses will allow us to paint a much more detailed picture of the Late and Final Neolithic periods in the Soester Börde region.

Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe 2021, 85-88. In 2021, metal detectorists were tasked by the LWL Archaeology Unit of Westphalia (department Olpe) with surveying the »Loermund« hillfort near the city of Warstein in the Hochsauerland district (northern Sauerland uplands). They discovered Iron Age finds, allowing the earlier phases of the fortified site to be dated to the later Iron Age. Two rings attest to links between the Hochsauerland district and the Celtic La Tène Culture in the south.
Konstanz und Wandel. Die drei Wiener Rathäuser als Orte städtischer Identität, in: Jahrbuch des Vereins für Geschichte der Stadt Wien 77
OPLL, Konstanz u. Wandel Wiener Rathäuser JbVGStW (2021)2021 •
An analysis of the history of the three Town Halls in Vienna shows both, consistency and change within a period of appr. 800 years. The oldest Town Hall was mentioned for the first time in 1288 and stood vis-a-vis the vicarage of the parish church of St Stephen's. We know about its function until the early 14th century when due to a ducal gift - a house owned by a family of opposers to the Habsburg rule had been confiscated after 1309 - the Town Hall was transferred to a site close to the central market-place of the "Hoher Markt". This venue combined with a Chapel of its own and expanded in the early 15th century after the Jewish expulsion from Vienna was in use until 1885. In the 15th century a number of mostly decorative works were undertaken, and this was also the case after the Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1683, when traces of damage had to be removed and a new, baroque facade was added. It was only after the profound political and territorial changes in the middle of the 19th century when the Town Hall became much too small. After a competition for the construction of a new Town Hall this building - now outside of the dismantled medieval and early modern fortifications in the zone of the "Ringstraße" - was inaugurated in 1883. Designed in the style of "historicism", planned by the German architect Friedrich (von) Schmidt, an expert for the revival of gothic architecture in general, it has maintained its functions until the present time. Due to the widening of urban politics as well as administration, the actual Town Hall has lost its function as the central site for the whole urban administrative activities in Vienna. Nevertheless, the urban government is accomodated here mostly. What has remained during the whole period of its existence since 1883 is its use for a number of activities for the broader public (festivities, exhibitions, etc.).
