The fabrication of nano-sized materials with conventional ball mill is a very difficult process. But it is not impossible. When the capacity of the mill is reduced, the nano-sized product can be reached. In this study, nano-sized calcite was produced by conventional ball mill. Firstly, the mill capacity (feed amount) was reduced, then, the effect of the grinding media type was investigated. Spherical ball and cylindrical shaped “Cylpebs” are used as grinding media. Comparative tests have been performed using Cylpebs and spherical balls in a 20 tph capacity industrial ball mill under the same conditions. The results showed that Cylpebs was more efficient than conventional spherical balls. In addition, the capacity of the conventional ball mill for the fabrication of nano-sized products should be significantly reduced. When the mill capacity is reduced by 75% (5 tph) and grinded with Cylpebs, the fineness (d 90 ) of the product reaches 1300 nanometers

Effects of moisture on grinding of natural calcite by a tumbling ball mill1993 •
— In this study, the effects of liquid additives such as water, triethanolamine (TEA) and ethylene glycol (EG) on the dry fine grinding of calcite were investigated by using a laboratory scale vertical stirred mill. The experiments were carried out by a batch operation, and the change in average particle size (D 50) and specific surface area (SSA) (m 2 /g) and colour properties (L*, a*, b*, ∆E, WI) of product. The results show that the chemical additives and water promotes the fine grinding of calcite and that the maximum specific surface area of calcite (2.97 m 2 /g) obtained with EG additives 0.5%. The average particle size at this point was 3.16 µm. The results also show that the lightness (L) values of the ground calcite products slightly increased from 97.62 to 98.53 with grinding aids (TEA) increased from 0% to 0.5%. The whiteness index (WI) value of the ground calcite products slightly increased from 97.41 to 98.25 with grinding aids (TEA).
A Review of the Grinding Media in Ball Mills for Mineral Processing
Grinding Media in Ball Mills-A Review2023 •
The ball mill is a rotating cylindrical vessel with grinding media inside, which is responsible for breaking the ore particles. Grinding media play an important role in the comminution of mineral ores in these mills. This work reviews the application of balls in mineral processing as a function of the materials used to manufacture them and the mass loss, as influenced by three basic wear mechanisms: impact, abrasion, and corrosion. The effect of grinding media geometries and density on the mill performance was also reviewed to determine what the research has recommended as the most suitable grinding media for different grinding applications. Although considerable work has been carried out in that area, the influence of grinding media shape on the liberation of minerals, as well as the effect of various mill conditions on the performance of mixed grinding media shapes, are still poorly understood. Thus, the review opens up opportunities for further research to improve the grinding processes, especially considering that even a slight improvement in the process efficiency significantly reduces the production costs.
