This study develops a time series model for water waves using a weighted Taylor series approach to analyze water wave dynamics. The model incorporates the continuity equation, Euler's momentum conservation equation, and the Kinematic Free Surface Boundary Condition, all formulated through the weighted Taylor series. By integrating the modified continuity equation across the water depth, utilizing depth-averaged velocity concepts, we derive the water surface elevation equation. Similarly, applying the Euler momentum conservation principle to the water surface yields an equation for the horizontal water particle velocity, which is subsequently converted into an expression for the horizontal depth-averaged velocity. The equations for water surface elevation and horizontal water particle velocity are solved using numerical methods. The application of the numerical model results in the generation of four distinct wave profiles: sinusoidal, Stokes, cnoidal, and solitary wave profiles, classified according to Wilson's (1963) criteria. The emergence of each wave profile type is influenced by the specified input wave height.

Powerful applications such as Microsoft Office's Excel and Word are widely used to perform common tasks in the workplace and in education. Scripting within these applications allows unanticipated user requirements to be addressed. We show that such extensibility, intended to support office automation-type applications, is well suited to the creation of learning activities and learning environments. We have developed a range of tutorial activities using Excel and Word in introductory mathematics, writing and economics courses. These tutorials have the dual purpose of teaching academic concepts and practical computer literacy skills. The software architecture of our learning environment includes a database-supported back-end to automatically record students’ responses, which allows for greater control over what students do. Additionally, this allows one to automate common procedures to improve usability and feedback automation to support learning. We have been applying our ideas for the last six years and currently 1,500 students are using the environment. We suggest that this pragmatic solution can provide a high degree of interactivity and flexibility in a range of learning contexts that represents a cost-effective alternative for use alongside traditional approaches.

En los últimos años se ha discutido mucho sobre el régimen que debe resguardar el funcionamiento de nuestras instituciones de educación superior, la manera en que debe estructurarse la oferta de este nivel formativo y la naturaleza que debe tener el financiamiento de quienes acceden a esta formación. Poco o nada se ha debatido sobre el carácter de la universidad. ¿De qué debemos hacernos cargo al pensar en una institución universitaria? Esta obra aspira a cerrar este vacío. Y esta reflexión indudablemente que orienta e incluso es indispensable para sancionar las dimensiones que acaparan la atención política. Sin entender las condiciones bajo las cuales la universidad es posible es muy difícil sino imposible sancionar las políticas públicas más apropiadas. Pero el debate sobre la educación superior en Chile ha estado también marcado por la forma de entender el acceso a ella. Entendido éste como un derecho social genera una serie de interrogantes y afirmaciones que deben ser objeto de deliberación pública y contrastar con la idea de universidad que se está pensando. Ese ejercicio es indispensable si no se quiere traicionar los ideales que supone hacer universidad.
