Chapter prepared for the Cambridge Handbook of Research Methods in Clinical Psychology. Edited by A. Wright & M. N. Hallquist. We describe models for analyzing data from dyadic systems such as therapist-client, mother-child, or romantic partners, among others. We define key characteristics of dyadic systems and then identify clinical research questions related to dyadic systems and processes that unfold over time. We use these questions to select a set of statistical models and data analytic techniques for answering clinical research questions related to dyadic research.

P73 Background: Elevated macromolecule signals, as measured by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) after human stroke, are hypothesized to arise from mobile lipids that accumulate within macrophages. However, their chemical identity, cellular location, and clinical significance remain uncertain. Methods: Adult Wistar rats underwent a 90 minute middle cerebral artery occlusion with reperfusion. Animals survived for 2 to 5 days prior to sacrifice. Immediately after decapitation, 400 μm slices from an infarcted region of forebrain were prepared and perfused in artificial CSF at 36 degrees C, and studied by gradient-enhanced one-dimensional (1D) MRS and by two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (COSY). Cryostat coronal sections from other, identically prepared rats were stained for lipid (Nile Red) and immunostained for microglia/macrophages (OX42). Results: The 1D spectra from infarcted samples contained broad resonances arising from lipid methylene and other fatty acyl prot...

The spread of COVID-19 has led to the disruption of K-12 education for about 90% of the world’s student population. The effects on children’s academic development are unknown. We examined how disruption in schooling over three consecutive summers in disadvantaged minority children affects reading and whether an intensive intervention can ameliorate these effects. Our data were collected prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. We applied Latent Change Score models to examine developmental trends in a longitudinal study of reading in 111 economically disadvantaged children, assessed biannually from grades 1 to 4, including 3 summers (for a total of 6 months of school hiatus). The students fell behind the normative population in their ability to understand written texts, a decrease in their relative percentile of 0.25 of a standard deviation each summer, and an effect 3–4 times greater than prior studies suggested. Compared to children in a comparison group, children who received an evidence-b...

Aim of the study: To analyze the impact of the 1998 wildfire on dwarf pine (Pinus culminicola) population stands 18 years after the fire.Area of study: Cerro el Potosí, Nuevo León (México)Material and methods: We measured regeneration, biovolume of individuals, diversity and species composition in unburned and burned plots randomly selected in the area.Main results: Recovery was very slow, with limited dense natural regeneration and very slow growth. Significant differences between control and burned plots were found with respect to regeneration, species composition, evenness and soil nutrients, suggesting that fire could promote natural regeneration and biodiversity in these communities.Research highlights: Management efforts are necessary to maintain a natural fire regime and ensure grazing exclusion in order to favor the conservation of the community dominated by this rare species P. culminicola.

BACKGROUND Although average-based effect size (ES) and percentage of individual changes (PIC) are quite different, they are not independent: larger ESs lead to higher PICs. However, this association has not been sufficiently explored. METHOD We analyzed this association based on data simulated in the context of a pre-post design, with and without control groups. We simulated various distributions, sample sizes, degrees of test-retest reliability, effect sizes, and different variances in pre- and post-test. RESULTS The PIC is closely associated with the ES across a wide variety of empirically frequent scenarios. In the "single group pre-post designs", the linear regression model shows R2 values above 0.90. In the "control group pre-post designs", the linear regression model shows R2 values above 0.80. These results were found even when the post-test variability differed from that of the pre-test, replicating, extending and generalizing the findings in previous stu...

Accelerated longitudinal designs (ALDs) allow examining developmental changes over a period of time longer than the duration of the study. In ALDs, participants enter the study at different ages (i.e., different cohorts), and provide measures during a time frame shorter than the total study. They key assumption is that participants from the different cohorts come from the same population and, therefore, can be assumed to share the same general trajectory. The consequences of not meeting that assumption have not been examined systematically. In this paper, we propose an approach to detect and control for cohort differences in ALDs using Latent Change Score models in both discrete and continuous time. We evaluated the effectiveness of such a method through a Monte Carlo study. Our results indicate that, in a broad set of empirically relevant conditions, both LCS specifications can adequately estimate cohort effects ranging from very small to very large, with slightly better performanc...

This paper represents a preliminary study of the botany, natural history and taxane chemistry of the Mexican yew, Taxus globosa Schltdl. Taxonomic history, morphological comparison to other North American species and ecological habitat are discussed. Chemical study involved leaf and twig material from forty-nine plants from three localities in Mexico. Levels of taxol, cephalomannine and baccatin III were determined by HPLC analysis. Intrapopulational variation was found to be very high while mean taxane levels for each of the three populations were very similar. The average percentage of taxol in leaves of T. globosa is higher than in all other species of Taxus (0.0121% dry wt.).

Identifying change at the individual level is an important goal for researchers, educators, and clinicians. We present a set of statistical procedures for identifying individuals who depart from a normative change. Using Latent Change Scores models (LCS), we illustrate how the Individual Likelihood computed from a statistical model for change (IL) and from an alternative unrestricted model (ILsat) can be used to identify atypical trajectories in situations with several measurement occasions. Using LCS and linear regression, we also show how the observed and latent change residuals can be used to identify atypical individual change between 2 measurement occasions. We apply these methods to a measure of general verbal ability (from WISC–R), from a large sample of individuals assessed every 2 years from Grade 1 to 9. We demonstrate the efficiency of these techniques, illustrate their use to identify individual change in longitudinal data, and discuss potential applications in developme...

Cognitive training and brain stimulation studies have suggested that human cognition, primarily working memory and attention control processes, can be enhanced. Some authors claim that gains (i.e., post-test minus pretest scores) from such interventions are unevenly distributed among people. The magnification account (expressed by the evangelical "who has will more be given") predicts that the largest gains will be shown by the most cognitively efficient people, who will also be most effective in exploiting interventions. In contrast, the compensation account ("who has will less be given") predicts that such people already perform at ceiling, so interventions will yield the largest gains in the least cognitively efficient people. Evidence for this latter account comes from reported negative correlations between the pretest and the training/stimulation gain. In this paper, with the use of mathematical derivations and simulation methods, we show that such correlati...

This article is about collaboration between students and professors on environmental justice research in digital humanities labs.  A collective of university students and their professor investigated digital archives pertaining to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) using mind mapping software called XMind. Our purpose was to enable and organize findings on segregation and discrimination within CCC camps.   The impact this research had on students who came from interdisciplinary backgrounds was exposure to the use of technological resources in the context of an increasing need to use technology to preserve historical archives, carry out research, and make connections to other research on the topic of environmental justice.  Interdisciplinary in their approach, students used mind mapping software to organize data visually.  Lab members recognized that visualization of information allowed students to think about how to organize information using methods of historical analysis. It al...

The importance of sensors has grown dramatically through the years, specially since they have the capability to create a specific task. Multiple sensor fusion is an area that has rapidly grown due to its multiple and beneficial applications. It is common to develop devices that have multiple sensors; however, the fusion of these multiple sensors to make a single output is remarkable. In fact, this is the way people chose to try to model the human body which has innumerable sensors and makes one decision. The development of sensor fusion not only helps create innovations in technology, but has the potential in diagnosing several medical conditions. Some of these medical conditions such as Parkinson\u27s disease and strokes may affect the way a person walks. Here, we will develop a multiple sensor device that records the ground reaction force in the foot and the way a person walks and can detect anomalies

Peer Reviewe
