Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast & Audio Media
Podcasting: Considering the evolution of the medium and its association with the word ‘radio’2009 •
"The paper draws on the author’s research into podcasting, especially in relation to its uptake by public service radios, which may be constituting a revitalising of the public radio voice. Invoking historian, John Durham Peters discussion of the merits of dissemination and dialogue, and critical theorist Bertolt Brecht’s disappointment with “one way” broadcast radio in the 1930s, the author explores podcasting as a new form of broadcast dissemination which draws on radio’s past dreamings of “eros and democracy” (Peters 1999). The significance of this time-shifted and ever expanding distribution of voice and its acousmatic presence creating a new media 'pod-ecology' is also discussed in the context of amateur and citizen media. This article features the Podcast “POD... ``O QUÊ? `` CAST, a journalistic product, in the style of a specialized electronic magazine, which aims to offer tips, evaluations, analyzes and interviews about the universe of podcasts, also producing a service for a niche audience of consumers and producers of podcasts, although it can also instigate new followers of this type of media. The research that founded the project, of an exploratory and bibliographic nature, collected theoretical data on the topic and identified the presence of different types of podcasts on the internet. Based on the data, which anchored the discussion about this sound media, the steps for producing the episodes that make up the podcast prototype were defined, seeking to encompass opinions from professionals in the field, in order to present the perspective of content producers. The product was made available through the streaming platform Spotify.

Podcast – Commentary journalism in a digital publicThe internet and digital platforms provide commentary- and opinion-based journalism with new opportunities to develop into new digital formats, such as podcasts. This article is based on the case studies of four Norwegian podcasts in 2020 and 2021. The findings show that commentary journalism in the form of podcasts has an obvious dual purpose: as publicity and as a commercial. The podcast facilitates a societal mission for the public while creating branded goods for the companies involved. Based on the material and the categories we had constructed, we developed a set of binaries that, understood as typologies, capture important dimensions of the differences between the podcasts. These binaries are monologue vs. dialogue, factual vs. personal, reflexive vs. assertive, and intellectual discussants vs. experts. In the article, we discuss how podcasts draw commentary journalism in a dialogical direction. We also discuss what impact this has upon public reasoning and the democratic rol...

110 Abstract Th is article investigates independent podcasts created outside traditional institutions (Markman, 2012) on the world’s largest podcast platform, Apple Podcasts, in the context of streaming media. Th rough a quantitative content analysis of 552 Danish podcasts, the study off ers insights into independent podcasting, its medium grammar and content (Meyrowitz, 1998), and the conditions by which independent podcasters navigate in a liminal space between traditional radio and online participatory practices (Berry, 2016; Markman, 2012). Th e analysis shows that the predominant parts of independent podcasts are conversations and interviews about personal, self-refl ective stories and mainstream hobbies such as football, fi lms, and television. Th ese podcasts are less time-consuming to produce than crafted audio (McHugh, 2016) about research-heavy topics. Th e oversupply of conversations and interviews about personal stories and mainstream hobbies further suggests that indepe...

Based on a theoretical framework grounded in a sociological analysis of usage and the subculture paradigmatic approach of Cultural Studies, this paper analyzes the socio-cultural dynamic of online participation through the use of a technological device in a digitally literate community, namely independent podcasters. I argue that independent podcasting should not be understood as either a form of “radio-to-go” or a simple online delivery system. Drawing on data collected in a three-year period of research within the Montreal (Canada) podcasting community, I propose that independent audio podcasting is a specific form of online participation, with its own subcultural logic and a unique “style” that is completely different from the institutional and traditional radio model. To present the specificity of the podcasting subculture, this paper demonstrates how a podcast’s distinctive style is formed, through a singular level of familiarity among users, the subversion of lexical radio conventions and the influence of DJing and blogging on podcasters’ practices. This paper illustrates the stylistic repertoire of Montreal’s independent podcasters based on an online practice on the fringe of the mainstream media production model, specifically with regard to commercial radio.
On the 1st of February 2017, The New York Times published the first episode of ‘The Daily’, a news podcast hosted by Michael Barbaro that, five years later, has become the most popular in the world with four million listeners each day and more than 3000 million accumulated downloads. The unprecedented success of this audio format, that has emerged in a traditional newspaper, has helped to revamp radio news and has spread in various versions all over the world. This investigation analyses daily podcasts in Spain and, by means of a quantitative and qualitative study, identifies their main themes, narrative structures, and expressive contributions based on four illustrative experiences in this market: ‘Quién dice qué‘, ‘AM’, ‘El Mundo al día’, and ‘Un tema al día’. The results reveal the consolidation of two clearly defined models: a more conventional one based on radio bulletins and news reports; and another, more innovative model that replicates the anglophone formula that opts for depth, dissemination, and a conversational tone to redefine the canons of the audio news narrative and take advantage of the potential of audio as a new distribution channel for newspapers in the digital eco-system.

Podcast production and marketing strategies on the main platforms in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Situation and perspectives2022 •
Fifteen years after the term was coined, the podcast is now consolidated as a sound format with a specific identity within the digital media ecosystem. The practice of podcasting is none other than radio, but one encompassing diverse production on both expressive and thematic levels whose properties (mobility, narrative fragmentation, and the integration of multiple devices) and personalized consumption generate a very different listener attitude compared with traditional radio. After an initial period of independent amateurism strongly conditioned by the technologies available, the podcast has achieved significant global popular recognition, as well as an increasingly important professional dimension thanks to the emergence and spread of new distribution platforms (podcast networks) designed to serve as alternatives to the dominant feeds (such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, iVoox, and Spotify) that rely on different catalogs and business models. This investigation identifies, ...
