Roy Marom Al-Sheikh Muwannis: Transformations in the Arab Countryside between the Mountainous Interior and the City of Jaffa, 1750-1848 Al-Sheikh Muwannis, where Tel Aviv University was later established, was one of four villages founded in the Ottoman period next to the shores of the Sharon (along with the villages of Ijlil, Al-Haram Sidna ‘Ali and Umm Khalid). The article traces the village's history within its social and spatial contexts. At the historiographical level, the establishment of Al-Sheikh Muwannis as discussed in the article demonstrates that the expansion of settlement in the southern Sharon was the result of the internal expansion of the core settlement by residents of the mountainous highlands of Samaria, and not by Egyptian ‘penetrators’ as previously claimed. Furthermore, the article outlines the complex relationships that developed between the original village population, new migrants, and nomadic populations camping on its lands; relationships that were exploited to further the growth and crystallization of Jewish settlement in the Yarkon Basin and around Tel Aviv. The close proximity of al-Sheikh Muwannis to the countryside of the Sharon and to Tel Aviv-Jaffa, led to the development of a space expressing architectural, social, linguistic and technological concepts derived from both countryside and city alike. The rich and complex picture presented in this paper can provide a framework to understand the development of other villages like al-Haram Sidna ‘Ali, Jalil, al-Jammasin, Sumayil (al-Mas‘udiya) and Salama.

British authorities in Palestine encouraged the development of Jerusalem beyond its municipal boundaries, based on their understanding of its future trends. Under Ottoman rule, new neighborhoods were built in proximity to the center of town and with a certain degree of geographic contiguity with the neighborhoods that preceded them. In contrast, the British Mandate built neighborhoods in remote locations, spread over extensive areas. These neighborhoods had no contiguity with any previous settlements, and were planned based on available land. These "Garden Suburbs" established a new form of urban sprawl that surrounded central Jerusalem from the south (Talpiot together with Admat Amos and Givat Eliyahu, which were in the planning stage) and the west (Rehavia, Bayit VeGan, Beit HaKerem, Kiryat Moshe and Givat Shaul). Until the beginning of the Mandate period, the area east of Jerusalem remained almost devoid of Jewish habitation. Members of Agudat HaDayarim (The Tenants'...

14 The Contribution of the Scholar and Biblical Commentator Abraham ibn Ezra in the Transfer of Advances in Mathematics from Islamic Spain to Christian Europe2023 •
There are 2 versions. A Hebrew and English version. In this paper we will present some of the mathematical achievements of Abraham ibn Ezra, to which he was not given proper credit or credit of being the first to introduce these mathematical concepts to Europe. As a result, we will correct to a degree the history of mathematics. It is very possible that Abraham ibn Ezra did not achieve general recognition for his work as his books were written in Hebrew and never translated into Latin. However, he still deserves recognition for this.
Music and Musical Instruments in Hebrew Secular Poetry in Spain: The Song of Praise of Yosef ben Ṣaddīq in Honor of Yiṣḥaq ben Baron / נגינה וכלי נגינה בשירת החול העברית בספרד: שיר השבח של יוסף אבן צדיק לכבוד יצחק אבן ברוןMedieval Arabic sources attest that Arabic poetry, especially the muwaššaḥāt, were performed in the courts of the kings with music, usually by the qaynah (pl. qiyān), the captive female slave, specifically educated and raised to be a singer, music player and dancer at the courtly banquets. No wonder, then, that this character of the qaynah frequently appears in medieval Arabic poetry, in particular that of Andalusia. The regular musical instrument used at these banquets was the lute (Ar. al-'ūd; Heb. kinnor or nevel). This object was highly esteemed in Arabic literature and was considered the foremost musical instrument. From the mid-tenth century Hebrew secular verse in Andalusia adopted the theme of music, and in fact reflected all its details as they appear in Arabic poetry. The present paper surveys in detail the occurrences of music in all its aspects in Andalusian Hebrew poetry, from Dunaš ben Labrạt at the court of Ḥisday ben Šaprūt in Cordova in the third quarter of the ...
