This thesis aims to understand the relationship between theory and practice from the perspective of the architect and his task. The hypothesis of this project, that ‘the practice of an architect-theorist must be analogous to his theorising’, is explored here with the contemporary example presented by architect-theorist Rem Koolhaas. The study seeks to critically examine, as French philosopher and thinker of art Hubert Damisch describes, his ability to present “a rare link between a theory and a project. The thesis discusses both subjective differentials in the form of personal idiosyncrasies in Koolhaas’ mechanisms of success, as well as objective similarities in the form of general structures that characterises the typology of the combined theorist and master-builder.
