This is a brief history of iron and steel production from its earliest origins through the 20th century, with a special focus on the career of Andrew Carnegie and on the economic impact of cheap and abundant steel.

This study analyses the pacifism of Andrew Carnegie and Edwin Ginn against the backdrop of the emergence of new philanthropic practices. Scientific philanthropy and the institutional model of the philanthropic foundation provided the means for new approaches to the peace cause. The study thus argues that Ginn and Carnegie personified a shift from a non-institutional pacifism to an institutional internationalism. Despite noteworthy similarities in Ginn and Carnegie’s approach to peace, however, their two philanthropic foundations—the World Peace Foundation and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace—differed in strategies. This study suggests that the leadership of these institutions shaped these different approaches to conflict.

The slow but steady demise of the Roseau Public Library has unfolded before our eyes as some macabre horror movie for over four years. On September 24, 2021, Dominica News Online (DNO) reported that the fourth fire at the dilapidated and roofless national library had occurred on the evening of September 22, 2021. In what is redolent of a tragicomedy, the DNO report noted that a "mentally ill man was aiding the police in their investigations of arson." The library was a gift to our island by Scottish American iron magnate Andrew Carnegie at the urging of Dominica's then British Governor Hesketh Bell. Opened in 1905, the Roseau Public Library is the de facto national library that has opened the doors of knowledge to generations of our people.

At the turn of the 20th century, the United States stumbled into the beginnings of an empire. Within the public debates of the time, various strands of argument were proferred both for and against taking on such an endeavour. This paper examines the influence of the Republican intellectual tradition on this discourse, and subsequently on the early American administration of the Philippines.

It was principally through Antun Gustav Matoš (1873-1914) that Croatian literature received its modernity for the twentieth century, as well as its sense of Europeanness. His essay on Emerson (1905) can be analyzed as part of the same agenda, especially in view of its marked Nietzschean overtones; it is Nietzsche’s Emerson that Matoš brings to Croatian culture and, with it, a corresponding inflection of both Europe and philosophy. While this suggests that a Nietzschean America comes to shape the American phantasm for the twentieth-century Croatian modernity, I propose to discuss another operation which is equally critical to this placement of Emerson: the way in which Austrian-Hungarian cultural practices, definitive to Croatia at the time and at work in Matoš, decide Emerson’s profile and refract some of its Nietzschean features.
