Anglo-Norman Literature

The study aims to offer new insights into the context of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 1822. Keith Busby has recently ascribed this miscellany of Old French moral texts (sole witness of Jofroi de Waterford’s translations) to the Irish city of Waterford. The paper discusses this hypothesis, focusing on the codicological and historical aspects of the manuscripts. Moreover, the article presents my research on the (probably Anglo-Norman) redaction of the Livre de Moralitez transmitted by the codex.

John Tiptoft (Tibetot) stammte aus einer anglo-normannischen Familie. Er wurde im Jahre 1427/8 in Everton geboren und besuchte das Balliol College, Oxford. 1449 wurde er zum Grafen von Worcester erwählt. Sein ganzes Leben lang hielt JT eine wichtige Rolle in den höchsten Ämtern von England. In den zeitgenößischen Quellen waren seine Grausamkeiten-vielleicht zu übertriebendargestellt worden (-> Book of Howth; Warkworths Chronicle, Mirror for Magistrates; The Infamous End of the Lord Tiptoft) und galten ihm der Beiname von 'the butcher of England'. Im Jahre 1470 wurde er zum Tode verurteilt. JT war ein gebildeter Literat und Patron: er war ein großer Sammler von Handschriften, die der Universität von Oxford übergelassen wurden. Während seines Aufenthalt in Italien (1458-61) hörte er die Vorlesungen von Argyropoulus in Florenz und studierte in Padua und in Ferrara bei Guarino, der, seinerseits, bei Chrysoloras (der war an der Spitze vom 'New Learning'->) studiert hatte. Er hielt in Rom eine Rede vor dem Papst Pius II. JT besuckt auch das heilige Land mit R. Sanseverino (der bezählte die Reise im Viaggio in Terra Santa). Sein Werk besteht, außer aus ämtlichen Dokumenten und einige Briefen, aus Übersetzungen. Mit Sicherheit verfasste JT die Übersetz. von Ciceros De amicitia und Buonaccorso von Montemagnos Controversia de nobilitate (The Declamacion of Noblesse). Beide waren 1481 von Caxton gedruckt worden.

British Library, Additional MS 14252 is the only copy extant of a hitherto unedited prose Description of England (DEAFBibl: DescrEnglPr), consisting of a relatively faithful translation into the Anglo-Norman vernacular (c. 1200) of a passage from Henry of Huntingdon’s "Historia Anglorum" (§§ i.1–8, ed. Greenway 1996). The same passage of the Latin text was the source of another short text in Anglo-Norman, this time in rhyming couplets (DeafBibl: DescrEnglB), already edited by Alexander Bell.
In the article a comparative study, an edition and a short glossary of the prose Description of England are given.

This essay identifies a hand which copies and corrects much of the literary manuscript, London, British Library, MS Harley 219, as that of Thomas Hoccleve. Texts in Hoccleve’s handwriting include selections from Odo of Cheriton’s Fables and the Gesta Romanorum (a source for the Series), all of a unique copy of Christine de Pizan’s Epistre Othea, and a glossary of French terms translated into Latin and English. Additionally, Hoccleve’s handwriting can be found in corrections to a French Secretum Secretorum (a source for The Regiment of Princes) that is otherwise copied in another hand. This essay offers preliminary observations on the literary implications of these identifications and attempts to situate these texts within Hoccleve’s career as a clerk and poet.
