"Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), ed. Jonatan Meir, Three volumes, Mosad Bialik, Jerusalem

Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), first published in Vienna in 1819, is one of the sharpest and wittiest pieces of Jewish literature written in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the most important piece of Hebrew prose composed before the stories of Mendele Mocher Seforim. A sly and complex story deriding Hasidism and Hasidim, it is told through the correspondence between the beadles of Hasidic courts and contemporary rabbis, and it presents a dark picture of  avaricious frauds and swindlers whose main concern was control over territory and the souls of believers, a goal achieved by beguiling the authorities and attacking all opponents. Perl lends his book a ‘Hasidic’ feel both in its physical design and in its language, presenting a Maskilic version of In Praise of the Ba’al Shem Tov that lays Hasidism bare so that no reader will ever be able to look at that, or any other Hasidic book, in the same way again. In addition to the book’s satiric sting, which would have been enough to bring its readers a dual pleasure, Perl’s hints at contemporary people and places, hidden within anagrams and numerological tricks. With the unraveling of these clues, which also include the use of actual Hasidic sources, the book is a valuable, contemporary view of historical reality. A meticulous reading of the book may therefore open a window on the hidden worlds of Hasidism and the Haskalah at the start of the nineteenth century.


The first volume (Imagined Hasidism) serves as an introduction to the complex satirical writings of Josef Perl of Tarnopol (1773-1839). At the center of the book stands an analysis of the satires, Megaleh Temirin (1819) and Bochen Tzadik (1838), including a systematic treatment of the ‘characters’ in the central works and a discussion of the dozens of manuscripts to be found in the Perl Archive in Jerusalem. Perl’s writings are analyzed here in the fuller context of Hebrew and Yiddish literature in general and Maskilic and Hasidic literature in particular, as well as other polemical writings and governmental records critical of Hasidism. The study thus presents a complex and nuanced picture of the relationship between literature and history, between the anti-Hasidic reports and the more complicated historical reality, and lays the groundwork for further research into the genre of nineteenth-century Maskilic satire.

The second and third volumes (Megaleh Temirin) present for the first time an annotated edition of Megaleh Temirin. It is based on the first edition and the scattered manuscripts and it includes a comparison to its Yiddish translation. The book is accompanied by appendices on its origins and contents, including fundamental treatments of several passages: an explication of the encoded names, the Hasidic sources used by the author, and the variants found in the manuscripts and in the only edition of the book in Yiddish.

The editor of the book, Professor Jonatan Meir, teaches in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University. He has published several articles on the Haskalah of Eastern Europe, Hasidism, and a number of varied topics in twentieth-century Kabbalah.

Antisemitism is a versatile and complex concept that has theological, psychological, sociological and political dimensions. This concept is not only related to consider Judaism in all its bearings. But, conversely, it should be apprehended from the antiquity till nowadays within a global context. It is most significant phenomena that must be evaluated to study simultaneously historical process of mutual relations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam which are influential factors for shaping the modern world. It is also say that concepts are living organisms. Therefore, the etymological structure of antisemitism that provide clues to its essence should be considered when interpreting its story. It seems a sensible and methodical way of perceiving that meaning shifts have occurred in some perceptions related to this concept. First and foremost, the aim of this article is trying to make accurate results in the nature of some crucial problems that occupy the global agenda.

Bu makâlede, Yahudiler ve Latin Katolik Hıristiyanları arasındaki ilişkileri şekillendiren Anti-Semitizmin Oryantalizm ile doğrudan ‘sebepsonuç’ ilişkisi olduğuna dikkat çekilmektedir. Anti-Semitizmin Batı’da artışı ve devamında da Latin Katolik Hıristiyanlığının anti-İslamizminin etkisi kayda değer bir husustur. Makâle, Edward Said’in ‘Orientalism’ adlı eserindeki ‘antisemitizm’ ile ilgili değerlendirmelerinden hareketle, Yahudi-Hıristiyan ilişkileri tarihine bakmakta ve Yahudi-Hıristiyan kaynaklarına göre antisemitizmin kökenlerini incelerken , anti-Semitizmin Batı Hıristiyan tarihinde bilinen sebepler yanında anti-İslamizmden de kaynaklandığı, dolayısıyla Oryantalizmi şekillendirmiş olduğuna işaret etmektedir. Bunun temelinde Latin Katolik dünyasında yaygın bir şekilde ortaçağların başlangıcından 19. y.y.’a kadar müslümanlarla yahudilerin ‘İsa’nın krallığına karşı işbirliği yapan müttefikler olarak’ görülmüş olması yatmaktadır. Makâleye göre, Oryantalizm, Avrupa-merkezci (Eurocentric) tarih yazımına, anti-Semitizme ve bir o kadar da ‘anti-İslamizm’e dayanır. Yine bu bağlamda, makâlede, Oryantalistlerin, İslâmî kaynaklara, Oryantalist literatürde kendisini gösteren Hıristiyan Kitab-ı Mukaddes Yorum (Biblical Hermeneutics) geleneği ve Tarih Felsefesi alanındaki ‘tarihselcilik’ (historicism) yaklaşımını uygulamış oldukları hatırlatılmaktadır. Bunun arkasında gerek popüler kültür, gerekse akademik ya da sanat çalışmaları düzeyinde uzun bir tarihe yayılan anti-İslamizmin izlerini bulmak mümkündür.

Antisemitism from Muslims has become a serious issue in Western Europe, although not often acknowledged as such. Looking for insights into the views and rationales of young Muslims toward Jews, Günther Jikeli and his colleagues interviewed 117 ordinary Muslim men in London (chiefly of South Asian background), Paris (chiefly North African), and Berlin (chiefly Turkish). The researchers sought information about stereotypes of Jews, arguments used to support hostility toward Jews, the role played by the Middle East conflict and Islamist ideology in perceptions of Jews, the possible sources of antisemitic views, and, by contrast, what would motivate Muslims to actively oppose antisemitism. They also learned how the men perceive discrimination and exclusion as well as their own national identification. This study is rich in qualitative data that will mark a significant step along the path toward a better understanding of contemporary antisemitism in Europe.

After Nazi Germany invaded France, Third French Republic collapsed and an antisemitic regime called as Vichy France was established. In this period, French journal Je Suis Partout, which had an antisemitic view, which was closed shortly before the invasion of France by Nazi Germany, started to broadcast again after the establishment of Vichy France. The journal, which displayed a collaborative attitude with Nazi Germany, continued its publications until Allied States invaded France, and turned to harsh anti-Jewish rhetoric in its publications. The journal’s antisemitic rhetoric is important in that it reflects the antisemitic rhetoric of Nazi Germany in Vichy France. In the study, it was aimed to reveal the antisemitic discourses of the Je Suis Partout journal, which published in France during the Second World War. For this purpose, antisemitic caricatures published in the journal were examined using the semiotics method through Organon Model of German linguist Karl Bühler. In the findings obtained in the study, it was revealed that the journal tended to anti-Jewish discourses that USA, Soviet Union, England and Free French Army acted under the control of Jews. In this way, it was concluded that the journal tried to legitimize the struggle of Nazi Germany against Allied Powers and Free French Army.

Eğitim bu hedef doğrultusunda kullanılan en önemli araçlardan biridir. Birey çok küçük yaşlardan itibaren eğitimin tüm kademelerinde propagandaya maruz bırakılır. Amaç bireye neyi ve nasıl düşünmesi gerektiğini sürekli telkin ederek onun kendine çizilen dar ideolojik dünyanın dışına çıkmasının önlenmesidir. Almanya'nın Nazi rejimi altında geçirdiği yıllar eğitimin tüm alanlarının ve kademelerinin sapkın bir ideoloji tarafından istismar edilmesinin örnekleriyle doludur. Bu dönemde özellikle Yahudi düşmanlığı, nasyonal sosyalist ideolojinin ana saç ayaklarından birini teşkil ettiğinden ders kitaplarında kendisine sık sık yer bulmuştur. Hatta durum o kadar ileri dereceye varmıştır ki, tek amacı Yahudi düşmanlığını genç nesillere aşılamak olan kitaplar dahi yazılmıştır. Education is one of the most important tools used for this goal. The individual is exposed to propaganda at all levels of education from a very young age. The goal is to prevent the individual from leaving the narrow ideological world drawn to himself by inculcating what and how to think. Germany's years under the Nazi regime are full of examples of the abuse of all areas and levels of education by a perverted ideology. During this period, especially since anti-Semitism was one of the main pillars of national socialist ideology, it found itself frequently featured in textbooks. In fact, the situation has reached such an advanced level that even books have been written whose sole purpose is to instill anti-Semitism in the younger generations.
