Antonio Cornazzano

The following Master thesis concerns Antonio Cornazzano's Dell'arte militare, a text by a courtier of Piacenza who was at the service of respectively the Sforza family, Bartolomeo Colleoni and the Este family in the second half of the fifteenth Century. In addition to a general analysis of Cornazzano's treatise, including a broad survey of its style, its history and its contents, the following study aims both to depict the image of the ideal condottiero as the author conceived it, and to illustrate the technique to construct this model. A major part of this work is involved in the analysis of primary sources, both ancient and medieval. An examination of Cornazzano's interpretation, use and identification of these sources will be conducted to understand how the author elaborated and developed his model of the condottiero ideale. This process encompasses a comparative study of the different use of the ancient sources with two further treatises of the XV and XVI Centuries: the De re militari by Valturio and the Dell'arte della guerra by Machiavelli. Additionally, the study will focus on the figure of the exemplary leader as well as on the process of its formation regarding the various works.

Résumé:
Entre Mars et Venus : le genre de la danse chez les maîtres à danser italiens du XVe siècle.
Dans les cours italiennes du XVe siècle, la danse et le combat, essentiels dans l’éducation du noble, participent à la définition de la place et du comportement des femmes et des hommes. Les maîtres à danser du Quattrocento, construisent et définissent la théorie et la pratique d’une danse savante et produisent un discours conforme à des normes politiques, sociales et genrées. Guillaume le Juif, définit précisément le rôle et la place de la femme qui danse. Antonio Corazzino, également homme d’armes, poète et humaniste, exprime une vision de la bienséance, qui participe d'une conception plus générale des rôles attribués au genre. Les valeurs viriles assument une prééminence évidente dans l’évolution de la vie des cours. Les techniques du corps incarnent une réalité et un discours politique. Dans l'ensemble de son œuvre, le masculin et le féminin s’incarnent notamment dans les modèles de Mars et de Vénus, les deux faces de la Concordia discors, dans la femme qui danse et l’homme qui combat.

Abstract
Between Mars and Venus :  genre of dance among  the Italian dance-masters of XVth century.
In the Italian courts of the XVth century, dance and combat, essential parts in the education of the noble, are taking part in the définition of the place and behaviour of women and men. The dance-masters of Quattrocento, are constructing et defining the theory and the practice of a dance savante and producing an address in compliance with the normes political, social and gendered. Guglielmo Ebreo is defining exactement the rôle and the place of a dancing woman and man. Antonio Cornazzano, as well man at arms, poet and humanist, is expressing a vision of propriety, which is sharing a more general conception of the roles attributed to the genre. The virile values assume une evidente preeminence in the evolution of the  cours-life. The technique of the body is rappresenting a reality and a political form.  In the ensemble of his work, the masculine and the feminine became especially incarnate in the models of Mars and of Venus, two  faces of the Concordia discors, in the woman who is dancing  and in the man, who is fighting.
