The aging population in developed countries has shifted considerable research attention to diseases related to age. Because age is one of the highest risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases, the need for automated brain image analysis has significantly increased. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a commonly used modality to image brain. MRI provides high tissue contrast; hence, the existing brain image analysis methods have often preferred the intensity information to others, such as texture. Recently, an easy-to- compute texture descriptor, local binary pattern (LBP), has shown promise in various applications outside the medical field. In this paper, after extensive experiments, we show that rotation-invariant LBP is invariant to some common MRI artifacts that makes it possible to use it in various high-level brain MR image analysis applications.

The filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm is widely used in computed tomography for inverting the two-dimensional Radon transform. In this paper, we analyze the processing of an inconsistent data function by the FBP algorithm (in its continuous form). Specifically, we demonstrate that an image reconstructed using the FBP algorithm can be represented as the sum of a pseudoinverse solution and a residual image generated from an inconsistent component of the measured data. This reveals that, when the original data function is in the range of the Radon transform, the image reconstructed using the FBP algorithm corresponds to the pseudoinverse solution. When the data function is inconsistent, we demonstrate that the FBP algorithm makes use of a nonorthogonal projection of the data function to the range of the Radon transform.

For diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and under circumstances where patient movement can be modeled as rigid body motion, it is shown both theoretically and experimentally that translations and rotations produce phase errors which are zero- and first-order, respectively, in position. Whlile a navigator echo can be used to correct the imaging data for arbitrary translations, only when the diffusion gradient is applied in the phase encode direction is there sufficient information to correct for rotations around all axes, and therefore for general rigid body motion. Experiments in test objects and human brain imaging confirm theoretical predictions and demonstrate that appropriate corrections dramatically improve image quality in vivo.

During diving, marine mammals must rely on the efficient utilization of a limited oxygen reserve sequestered in the lungs, blood and muscles. To determine the effects of exercise and apnea on the use of these reserves, we examined the physiological responses of adult bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) trained to breath-hold on the water surface or to dive to submerged targets at depths between 60 and 210 m. Changes in blood lactate levels, in partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide and in heart rate were assessed while the dolphins performed sedentary breath-holds. The effects of exercise on breath-hold capacity were examined by measuring heart rate and post-dive respiration rate and blood lactate concentration for dolphins diving in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. We describe a new method to cut a precise, high-quality femoral cavity in Revision Total Hip Replacement surgery (RTHR) using a surgical robot and an intra-operative C-arm fluoroscope. With respect to previous approaches, our method contains several new features. (1) We describe a novel checkerboard plate designed to correct the geometric distortion within fluoroscopic images. Unlike previous distortion correction devices, the plate does not completely obscure any part of the image, and the distortion correction algorithm works well even when there are some overlaid objects in the field of view. (2) Also included are a novel corkscrew fiducial object designed to be integrated with the robot end-effector, and a 6D pose estimation algorithm based on the two-dimensional (2D) projection of the corkscrew, used in robot-imager registration and imager co-registration. (3) In addition, we develop a cavity location algorithm, which utilizes image subtraction and 2D anatomy contour registration techniques. (4) Finally, we propose a progressive cut refinement strategy, which progressively improves the robot registration during the procedure. We have conducted several experiments, in both simulated and in vitro environments. This review discusses the usefulness of bedside lung ultrasound in the diagnostic distinction between different causes of acute dyspnea in the emergency setting, particularly focusing on differential diagnosis of pulmonary edema and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is possible using a simple unit and easy-to-acquire technique performed by radiologists and clinicians. Major advantages include bedside availability, absence of radiation, high feasibility and reproducibility, and cost efficiency. The technique is based on analysis of sonographic artifacts instead of direct visualization of pulmonary structures. Artifacts are because of interactions between water-rich structures and air and are called "comet tails" or B lines. When such artifacts are widely detected on anterolateral transthoracic lung scans, we diagnose diffuse alveolar-interstitial syndrome, which is often a sign of acute pulmonary edema. An eight-rung, 3T degenerate birdcage coil (DBC) was constructed and evaluated for accelerated parallel excitation of the head with eight independent excitation channels. Two mode configurations were tested. In the first, each of the eight loops formed by the birdcage was individually excited, producing an excitation pattern similar to a loop coil array. In the second configuration a Butler matrix transformed this "loop coil" basis set into a basis set representing the orthogonal modes of the birdcage coil. In this case the rung currents vary sinusoidally around the coil and only four of the eight modes have significant excitation capability (the other four produce anticircularly polarized (ACP) fields). The lowest useful mode produces the familiar uniform B(1) field pattern, and the higher-order modes produce center magnitude nulls and azimuthal phase variations.
