The effects of various commercial hydrothermal processes (steaming, autoclaving, and drum drying) on levels of selected oat antioxidants were investigated. Steaming and flaking of dehulled oat groats resulted in moderate losses of tocotrienols, caffeic acid, and the avenanthramide Bp (N-(4'-hydroxy)-(E)-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-anthranilic acid), while ferulic acid and vanillin increased. The tocopherols and the avenanthramides Bc (N-(3',4'-dihydroxy-(E)-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-anthranilic acid) and Bf (N-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxy)-(E)-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-anthranilic acid) were not affected by steaming. Autoclaving of grains (including the hulls) caused increased levels of all tocopherols and tocotrienols analyzed except beta-tocotrienol, which was not affected. Vanillin and ferulic and p-coumaric acids also increased, whereas the avenanthramides decreased, and caffeic acid was almost completely eliminated. Drum drying of steamed rolled oats resulted in an almost complete loss of tocopherols and tocotrienols, as well as a large decrease in total cinnamic acids and avenanthramides. The same process applied to wholemeal made from groats from autoclaved grains resulted in less pronounced losses, especially for the avenanthramides which were not significantly affected.

Cyanide contents of locally purchased brown finger millet (Eleusine corocana L. Gaertner) and brown speckled kidney bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaries var. Rose Coco) were determined using raw, germinated and autoclaved samples. The aim was to establish the extent of cyanide content increase resulting from the germination process and the effectiveness of the autoclaving process on the reduction of cyanide levels in the samples, for safety considerations. Autoclaving was carried out at 121degree C for 20 minutes. It was found that germination increased the cyanide content by 2.11 to 2.14 fold in finger millet for laboratory processed samples. In the case of kidney beans the increment was 1.76 to 1.77 fold for laboratory samples. The increments for field processed samples were in the same range as those for laboratory samples. Autoclaving reduced the cyanide content to between 61.8 and 65.9 % of the original raw contents for finger millet and between 56.6 to 57.8% in the case of kidney b...
Intersalation reactions of the complexes [Ni(L-L)(3)]SO(4) and [Ni(L-L)(3)]Cl(2) (L-L=1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy)), with Na-montmorillonite carried out under different dynamic conditions such as ultrasonic... more
Intersalation reactions of the complexes [Ni(L-L)(3)]SO(4) and [Ni(L-L)(3)]Cl(2) (L-L=1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy)), with Na-montmorillonite carried out under different dynamic conditions such as ultrasonic irradiation, refluxing, autoclaving, and vigorous stirring showed that under ultrasonic irradiation, maximum adsorption of the metal complexes occurred within a period of 30 min. Metal complexes containing the phen ligand showed higher adsorption than those containing bpy. Maximum adsorption up to about three times the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay was observed. Aggregated (basal spacing d(001) 12.5 Å) Na-montmorillonite, in treatment with a higher amount (>CEC) of metal complexes, formed monolayered (basal spacing d(001) 17.6 Å) species, while with predispersed clay, bilayered (basal spacing d(001)>28 Å) or pseudo-trilayer (basal spacing d(001)>32 Å) species were formed. The bilayered species were thermally stable up to 250 degrees C...

Autoclaving is the absolute method of achieving instrument sterilization in any health care setting. However, it does rely on an effective pre-sterilization routine for instrument handling and the subsequent correct loading and operation of the autoclave. This paper addresses the issue of correct autoclave use, the causes of failures and the regular monitoring.

In this work, autotrophic growth of mesophilic acidophiles from the Underground Copper Mine Bor was performed. Two selected solution samples collected from the 'Tilva Ros' ore body were prepared in a 9K nutrient medium (Silverman and Lundgren, 1959). The first sample TR k-16 was obtained during the hole drilling of the ore body, and the second TR k-31 from the drainage channel. Two samples of 9K media (Silverman and Lundgren, 1959) were inoculated with two selected solution samples from the underground mine Tilva Ros. Inoculated culture media were incubated without prior autoclaving in the period of 6 days at a temperature of 28 ?C with purging air through the system with enough oxygen and carbon dioxide. Oxidation rate of ferrous ions in the first 3 days of incubation was 14.8 and 10.7 wt.% Fe2+/day, the next 3 days 17.3 and 13.6 and for the total period of 6 days 98.3 and 74.8 wt.% for the first and second sample, respectively, i.e. 100 wt.% with initial percentage of ferr...
