Blood Banking

As we know it's a difficult situation for all of us all over the world. Every year our nation requires about 4 Cr. units of blood, out of
which only 5 Lakh units of blood are available. It is not that, people do not want to donate blood. Often, they are unaware of the
need and also, they do not have a proper facility to enquire about it.

Camel-derived haemoglobin O2 carriers (CHBOC) are being developed as a blood substitutes for allogeneic RBCs or to improve tissue oxygenation. The tolerability of the developed product was evaluated in 10 moderately exsanguinated (40%) experimental mongrel dogs that were randomized to receive either 40 g/l CHBOC dissolved in lactated Ringer's solution at a rate of 5 ml/kg (Test group-14 trials) or 6 g/l HES 200 solution-6% hydroxyethyl starch (Fresenius Kabi-Germany) dissolved in saline at a rate of-5ml/kg-(Control group-6 trials). Overall, the clinical, haematological and biochemical responses were normal. The CHBOC was well tolerated and a promising product. However additional studies are needed to confirm the safety of the new CHBOC product in the realm of acellular blood transfusion.

Background and objectives: Blood transfusion has an important role in medical and surgical procedures. In Iran, a person needs blood or blood products every three seconds. Shortage of blood donors, poor facilities for storing and preparing blood products, lengthy preparation process until transfusion as well as irregular use of blood products are some of the important problems associated with blood transfusions. Given the importance of proper and effective use of blood products, this study was carried out to evaluate the blood consumption pattern in Imam Ali Educational, Research and Treatment Center in Bojnurd, Iran. Methods: This retrospective study was performed in 2020 on all cases requesting blood products at the Imam Ali Hospital in Bojnurd, Iran. All patient data including age, sex, blood type, requesting ward, type and the number of requested products including packed cell, freshly frozen plasma (FFP) and platelet were extracted from the hospital information system and the daily registry notebooks. Results: Of 3083 blood requests, 58.6% were for males and 41.4% were for females. The most and least requested blood groups were O + (32.9%) and AB-(0.5%), respectively. Packed cell (27%) and FFP (30%) were the most frequently requested products in the emergency department, while platelets (88.5%) was the most frequently requested product in the oncology department. Cross-matched to transfused blood ratio for packed cell was 1.37. Also, not using blood products index for packed cell, FFP and platelet was 27.5, 0 and 0, respectively. Moreover, transfusion index for packed cell, FFP and platelet were 0.72, 1 and 1, respectively. Conclusion: The pattern of blood consumption in the studied hospital is relatively favorable. However, in some wards such as neurology and burns, there is a need to review the requesting and consumption of blood products. In the case of Oblood type, the probability of not using the requested packed cell and cross-matched is above 50%, which highlights the need for reviewing the blood application process due to the scarcity of this blood type and the imposition of workload.

Background: As the new born is delivered and the umbilical cord divided, blood can be collected from the segment of cord, still attached to the placenta are known as “umbilical cord blood” stem cell. The blood collected in the umbilical cord is said to be a rich origin of stem. The blood contains stem cells which are also known as hematopoietic cells and these cells can convert into any types of organs in the body. These stem cells collected from the umbilical cord can heal genetic diseases related to blood and immune system like cancer, blood disorders and several life –threatening diseases.

Objectives: Assess the level of knowledge regarding stem cells and cord blood banking among antenatal mothers. Find out the association between the level of knowledge regarding stem cells and cord blood banking among antenatal mothers with their selected demographic variables.

Nearly all of the Egyptian hospitals are currently suffering from shortage in rare blood types (e.g., -AB, -B, +AB) which are urgent to perform vital surgeries. This leads them (hospitals or doctors) to ask patients’ relatives to donate the amount of the required blood. The alternative is that they are forced to pay for the blood if the required type and amount is already available in these hospitals or the blood banks. The main idea of this work is solving problems related to the blood banks from collecting blood from donators to distributing blood bags for interested hospitals. This system is developed in order to enhance the management, performance and the quality of services for the management of blood banks, which will be positively reflected on many patients in hospitals (Egyptian National Hospitals). This chapter targets undergraduate students, academic researchers, development engineers, and course designers and instructors.

This paper describes the use of blood spotted filter paper to study
the genotyping of ANKKI / Taq A gene. For the study hundred
patients visiting National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre
(NDDTC) for the treatment of co-morbid alcohol and nicotine
dependence were selected at random. Blood was spotted on to
Whatman 903 filter paper, dried and stored at room temperature.
Genomic DNA was extracted and genotyping was carried out from
dried blood and corresponding whole blood samples. All the
samples collected on to filter paper showed exact match of the
genotyping when compared to fresh blood. At the end of 6 months
of storage the genotyping was carried out successfully from all the
samples. The present study shows that dried blood is suitable for
ANKKI/ Taq A1 genotyping up to a period of 6 months at room
temperatures.
