Books and stories

At over 1,000 pages, and including some 750 pages of footnotes, this is the longest and craziest book ever written by a geographer, and in this case a letter to a geographer, John Agnew at UCLA,  who at the time was president of the Association of American Geographers.  The great majority of these stories within stories are true, and it is only the most perceptive of readers who can guess with any assurance which stories are in part or whole fictions.

Sefer Shivhei ha-Besht is considered the central collection of hagiographic tales regarding Israel Baʿal Shem Tov (c. 1700–1760). It was first printed in Hebrew in Kopys in the latter part of 1814 and includes hundreds of stories that circulated orally and were heard by the author. The work was soon translated into Yiddish with significant changes, and three such translations have survived, each one very different to the others. The first translation, published in Ostr‫ף‬g in 1815, was believed lost. This article offers a brief description of the recently discovered edition, discussing its uniqueness in the context of the work's printing history and on the background of Jewish publishing in Eastern Europe.

Medieval attitudes of courtly love are usually pejorative in tenor.  Descriptors like "entrapment," "ensnarement," and "enslavement" generally characterize the relationship between love and the courtly lover.  We see these depictions in 14th-century writer Arnaldus of Villanova and 14th-century physician Bernard of Gordon.  If we read Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus alongside Arnaldus' and Bernard's commentaries on bodies and contempt, it becomes clear that the contempt they speak of refers less to a body in contempt than a mind in contempt.  By reading Troilus as a medieval knight "kaught" by love, we discover a figure whose struggle is the maintenance of those axes of power, gender, and language by which he finds his identity both fashioned and undone.  Taking up Elaine Tuttle Hansen's nuanced reading of medieval gender crossing, I argue that if courtly love does open the possibility for gender transgression--hence is politically potent--it is because courtly love "unman[s]" men whose gendered identity is already political.

ABSTRACT:
The study undertakes the problem of the social, political and the theoretically applied potential of the film representation of the characters of the book and the reading in the programs for the stimulation of reading. The zone of problematic is outlined – publishers do not know well the market of the films, film producers do not know the market of the books, investigators of the book do not know the landscape of the "audiovisual reading" , while the younger generation emancipated its attitude towards films and books – absorbs them through all media platforms; makes the connection between them; criticizes, shares, encourages, has permanent expectations. The thesis, which is defended is that the symbolic and metaphorical use of the motif of the book, the reading, the publishing, the bookstore or the library in screen arts continues to resonate with the themes of knowledge and power and in the digital age, and this can be used as "social doping" for the apathetic and the erratic readers. In this article, the expression "social doping" is used to describe positive licit stimulant. The aim of the study is to explain and argue the book-centered films as multimodal tool for improving of the education in reading and the policies of reading worldwide, especially in communities with a high illiteracy rate. An empirical research on movies for the period 1898-2014 is summarized, accomplished by filmographic analytical and synthetic approach. The results are aimed at expanding the conceptual scope of policies to promote reading and creative approaches of the book production, to promote competition and collaboration between the publishing and the movie companies. Proving book-centered films as a serious and prestigious social instrument is expected to raise the awareness and the exactingness of the readers to the publishing programs and to insist on investing in business models with multiplatform representations, cross-media and transmedia of the artistic content.
