Britain in the 1930s

Described at the time as 'a radical re-appraisal of reformist documentary', my first published piece considers British documentary of the 30s. In particular at looks at how the industrial North was mobilised in the crisis and the role of intellectuals negotiating a central role for themselves in the social polity as the men of the future.
It is marked by the rhetorical anti-realism of the time, but it contains some useful ideas and still little considered material.

British film music in the 1930s might be defined by its variety. Unlike its Hollywood counterpart, there was no fully developed 'production line' system to the creation of film scores. However most studios still had a musical director, who was responsible for brokering composer deals and seeing a project to completion. This paper will examine a few individuals working in Britain at the time, including Muir Mathieson, Arthur Bliss and Mischa Spolianski, and will unpack some of the diplomacy that had to be negotiated to produce some of the major scores of the period. I will ask to what extent MDs actually engineered the stylistic direction of the music, and why some working relationships lasted whilst others withered.

A number of notions prevail about the music composed for British films in the 1930s. One is that underscoring (a term that has now developed a specific meaning: the non-diegetic musical accompaniment of dialogue) was kept to an absolute minimum; further, within this apparent restriction, the closely synchronized recitative-style of underscoring so prevalent in Hollywood was very unusual in films produced in the United Kingdom. In this article I will be examining such received perceptions of film music culture in Britain, with particular reference to the music composed for London Films Productions, the company founded by Alexander Korda in 1932.

During the 1930s, new photographic technologies and practices addressed the difficulties of dealing with different kinds of climate, in Britain and her colonies. This article draws on archival material associated with two brands of photographic film manufactured in England by Ilford Limited: Selochrome and Dufaycolor. It describes these films as involved in a process of 'worlding', and as part of a 'photography complex' which produces the tropics and the British seaside as testing grounds for photography. Worlding involves the harnessing of light and air, the recalibration of bodies, the redistribution of sensory experiences and the production of new materialities.

В то же время рассмотрение их через призму имагологии позволяет по-новому взглянуть на, казалось бы, уже давно изученные вопросы. В данной статье анализируются особенности формирования и развития образа Великобритании в советской прессе в контексте гражданской войны в Испании. В качестве источников используются публикации в газетах «Правда» и «Известия», а также в журналах «Огонек», «За рубежом» и «Спутник агитатора». В ходе исследования была выявлена неоднозначная позиция советских СМИ в отношении политики Великобритании в Испании. Ключевую роль в формировании образа Туманного Альбиона в советской прессе играли несколько тем. Одним из лейтмотивов в публикациях советских журналистов стал образ империи в упадке. В этой связи акцентировались уступчивость британского правительства перед лицом агрессивных действий франкистов и стоявших за ними Германии и Италии, его неспособность защитить национальные интересы своей страны. Параллельно с этим развивался образ расколотого общества в Великобритании, подчеркивалось, что пассивность правительства вызывает нарастающую критику как слева, так и справа. В то же время исключительно высоко оценивался вклад простых людей, добровольцев, выступивших в поддержку республики. Наконец, советские СМИ резко критиковали постепенный дрейф Лондона от политики невмешательства в сторону умиротворения и прямого поощрения агрессоров. Автор заключает, что освещение позиции Великобритании в советской прессе должно было способствовать формированию в общественном мнении понимания ошибочности британской политики. Лондон изображался как ненадежный потенциальный союзник в условиях надвигавшейся глобальной войны, который к тому же был склонен делать уступки странам-агрессорам.
