Bookbinding is the result of binding and sewing several quires or gatherings in order to form a volume. It was the last operation the codex underwent, with which it was already complete. Bookbinding's function is not only keeping all gatherings bound together and in correct order, but also to protect them, and it could confer decoration and luxury to the codex as well. We also know some books were circulated just being sewn, without any boards or cover. We shall see bookbinding's parts and the elements they have. This is necessary because the descriptions of bookbindings use a highly controlled vocabulary, that we must know.

Very few medieval bookbindings have been preserved and even fewer pre-medieval bookbindings. Despite the dearth of medieval bookbindings, the relatively few that have been preserved allow us to trace the evolution of bookbinding techniques and styles, and that shall be our subject in this 2-video series. We will quickly review bookbinding history in this video: earliest bookbindings, Byzantine bookbindings, and Islamic bookbindings.

The conservation of codex Βχφ 24 of the Museum in Byzantine Culture is described. The approach to its conservation was guided by a determination to preserve all of its features and at the same time to record as much as possible information about the technical details revealed during the process.

Alexander K. Kruglov: Research notes during the restoration of the oldest Triodion.

In 1899, the metropolitan bishop of Amasya in Pontus Anthimos (Άνθιμος Αλεξούδης) presented the Greek Palimpsest to the Russian Archaeological Institute of Constantinople. The scraped-out text of the manuscript is the oldest Triodion dated the middle of the 9th century. The author gives a brief description of the restoration of the sheets, the identification of deleted text and the reconstruction of the binding of this manuscript. There are also small notes on the history of the manuscript, the sequence of restoration, the previous bindings, and the things one should give particular attention to in the making the restoration binding.

Le but de l’ouvrage est de mettre en lumière certains aspects du rôle multimodal qu’a joué le livre depuis l’antiquité jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Autrement dit, ce volume se concentre sur le livre en tant qu’objet patrimonial, objet rituel, vecteur de connaissance, document historique, lieu d’interaction entre texte et image, entre patrimoine matériel et patrimoine immatériel, où les révolutions technologiques rencontrent les courants historiques, théologiques et artistiques, mais aussi en tant que source perpétuelle d’inspiration pour la création artistique.

The paper concerns the methodology used for the survey of post-Byzantine binding structures and forms an element of my PhD thesis at the University of the Arts London through Camberwell College of Arts. The research was made possible with a three years studentship and the supervision of Dr Nicholas Pickwoad (Director of Studies) and Patricia E. Easterling (Second Supervisor), Professor of Greek at the Newhnam College at Cambridge 2.

The papers considers the conservation of a 16th-century paper codex from the collection of the Aristotle University Library in Thessaloniki and the insight into so far unrecorded technical features that were revealed through the process. Presented in the 13th Seminar on the Care and Conservation of Manuscripts, organized by the Department of Scandinavian Research , The Arnamagnaean Institute, The Royal Library , Copenhagen 13 – 16 April 2011.

This article examines the presence and role of endbands in Greek-style bindings based on the author's research in two outstanding monastic book collections, Iviron Monastery in Mount Athos and St Catherine's Monastery in Sinai. The meagre iconographical and literary sources on endbands are mentioned and the aesthetic and functional aspects of endbands are explained. To enable consistent description of endbands, a classification system is proposed based on the distinction between simple/compound endbands, primary/secondary sewing, presence/absence of cores, and techniques of construction such as sewing, weaving, or a combination of both. a statistical analysis follows, based on a sample of 283 Greek-style bindings dated between the late fifteenth and early eighteenth centuries. The major changes in the use and construction of endbands in this sample are described and the substitution of Greek-style technique by Western European practice is detailed.«Les tranchefiles dans les reliures “alia greca”»Cet article étudie la présence et le rôle des tranchefiles dans les reliures « alia greca » en se basant sur les recherches effectuées par l'auteur dans deux collections de livres monastiques remarquables: celles du Monastère Iviron sur le Mont Athos et celles du Monastère de Sainte-Catherine dans le Sinaï. Les quelques sources iconographiques et littéraires sur les tranchefiles sont mentionnées et les caractéristiques fonctionnelles de celles-ci sont expliquées. Pour faciliter la description systématique des reliures, une classification est proposée en se basant sur la distinction entre: tranchefiles simples ou complexes, couture primaire ou secondaire, présence ou absence d'une âme et sur les techniques de construction telles que couture ou tressage ou la combinaison des deux. Suit une analyse statistique basée sur un échantillon de 283 reliures « alia greca » datant de la fin du XVe siècle aux débuts du XVIIIe siècle. A partir de cet échantillon, on décrit les principaux changements d'utilisation et de construction des tranchefiles. On détaille aussi le remplacement de la technique « alia greca » au profit des techniques d'Europe occidentale.„Kapitale griechischer Einbaende”Basierend auf dem Studium zweier herausragender Klosterbibliotheken, des Ivironklosters auf dem Berg Athos und des Katherinenklosters auf dem Sinai, untersucht der Autor in diesem Artikel das Vorkommen und die Rolle des Kapitals griechischer Einbaende. Die beschraenkte ikonographische und literarische Quellenlage werden besprochen und Aesthetik und Funktion der Kapitale erklaert. Um eine einheitliche Beschreibung der Kapitale zu ermoeglichen, wird ein Klassifikationssystem eingefuehrt, das darauf basiert, dass zwischen folgenden Elementen unterschieden wird: einfachen/zusammengesetzten Kapitalen, einfachen/dekorativen Kapitalen, An-/Abwesenheit eines Kapitalbundes und zwischen Heftungs- und Flechtarten oder der Kombination beider. Darauf folgt eine statistische Analyse, die auf der Untersuchung von 283 griechischen Einbaenden aus dem 15. bis fruehen 18. Jahrhundert basiert. Es werden sowohl die Hauptveraenderungen im Gebrauch und in der Machart von Kapitalen als auch der Wechsel von griechischen zu westlichen Kapitalformen beschrieben.“Cabezadas en encuadernaciones a la griega”Este articulo analiza la presencia y el rol de las cabezadas en las encuadernaciones a la griega a partir de las investigaciones realizadas por el autor sobre dos importantes colecciones de libros monásticos, una en el Monasterio de Ivirón en el Monte Athos y otra en el Monasterio de Santa Catarina en el Sinaí. Se señala la escasez de fuentes iconográficas y literarias sobre cabezadas y se explican sus aspectos funcionales y estéticos. Para facilitar una consistente descriptión de las cabezadas se propone un sistema de clasificación basado en la disrinción entre cabezadas simples y compuestas, costuras primaria y secundaria y presencia/ausencia de relleno interno, y las técnicas para su construcción tales como costura, tejido o la combinatión de ambos. Le sigue un análisis estadístico basado en 283 ejemplos de encuadernaciones a la griega fechados entre finales del siglo XV y principios del XVIII. Se describen los cambios más importantes en el uso y la construcción de cabezadas y se detalla la sustitución de las técnicas a la griega por las practicas de Europa occidental.
