Accounting books of the Massaria of Caffa, though being an emphatically secular source, may provide information on the history of the Catholic church in the Genoese domains in Crimea. Certain representatives of the clergy appear to be paid by the treasury of Caffa. As the works of M. Balard and G. Veinstein, S. Bocharov, A. Ponomarev, E. Khvalkov and A. Djanov show, occasional indications of someone's residence allow us to reconsider the city’s toponymy and topography, to localize churches and quarters. Year after year spending on feasts and memorial days are fixed in the books of the Massaria, and through these rituals the relationships between Genoese authorities, catholic hierarchy, parishes and city communities are revealed. Prosopography data, already being used for reconsidering the ethno-confessional shape of the city, may provide, if there are parallel sources, food for understanding such large processes as the union of Armenian and Roman churches

The martyrs John and Paul this accounts links with the 26th of June were eexecuted during the rule of Julian 'the Apostate.,' the same emperor who died on the 26th of June in the year 363 during his invasion of Parthia. This fact could go some way to explain the association of the Pied Piper with the issue of apostacy.
