En este texto se relata la crónica o, si se prefiere, el diario de los hechos que siguieron a la publicación del texto de fray Atanasio de Lobera, desde las primeras gestiones de 1598 para buscar una reliquia del santo hasta su consecución en 1644, pasando por su designación en 1617 como patrono de Tarazona o los primeros intentos por presentar dignamente el trofeo.

This study investigates the place of San Salvatore in the holy topography of Venetian Candia. By focusing on the largest convent in the Augustinian Province of the Holy Land, it contributes to a better understanding of a neglected subject in mendicant scholarship, namely the Augustinian friars’ expansion in the eastern Mediterranean. This article offers a detailed reconstruction of the demolished building and its sacred space, and sheds new light on interaction among the mixed Latin-Greek population in Venetian Crete by examining icons, altars, liturgy and, in particular, the introduction of the cult of Nicholas of Tolentino.

Pilgrimage art is visual culture intended to enhance or direct a pilgrim's experience at a particular sacred site. The artwork is quite varied, but it tends to fall into broad categories including reliquaries and shrines, architectural settings and decoration, and pilgrim costumes and souvenirs. Whether adorning massive, international centers (Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela) or tiny parish churches, works of art were used to direct pilgrims into specific areas of the church and to focus their attention on significant features. The architectural forms, shrines, altars, wall paintings, stained glass, and sculpture coalesced, dignifying and enhancing the sacred spaces. Sculptural capitals directed a pilgrim's view, canopies were lifted to reveal sparkling shrines, and carved doorways framed a pilgrim's view of a miraculous sculpture. The movement, music, and smells of incense and beeswax burning merged to make pilgrimage an extraordinary event.

Within the territories under the dominion of the Iberian monarchies, on both sides of the Atlantic, we seek to approach the cult rendered to Saint Iphigenia mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In addition to the specialized bibliography, we rely on the first European and American publications that gave news about this African saint, as well as on the brotherhoods that were the driving force of devotion. With all this, we have raised a geography of images to Iphigenia in sculpture and painting in three continents, and we show how the 1738 Carmelite model of the friar José Pereira de Santana dominated in the representations of the saint in Europe, Africa and in Portuguese America, not so in the American territories of the Hispanic monarchy, being these images particularly novel and some of them unpublished.

The focus of this article is the hagiographies and novenas to San Benito de Palermo that circulated in the territories of New Spain, most of which were produced locally in the 18th and 19th centuries. While these devotional books can be used as a means of taking the measure of official holiness during the years of their publication, upon closer analysis this body of religious literature reveals the virtues and attributes of this Sicilian Saint that descended upon, among others, people of African descent. For this reason, the discussion surrounding his «skin color» constituted the principal obstacle against which this Negro Franciscan found himself struggling constantly. In the final section, the paper highlights the role of the Franciscans in New Spain during the colonial period in America as the community that, through the medium of the printing press, most strongly promoted the cult of this illustrious figure.

This research analyzes from an iconographic perspective the mural representations of the three holy kings of Hungary – St. Stephen, St. Emeric, and St. Ladislas – which were depicted as a collective in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Previous scholars have considered that this iconographic theme emerged generally in the Angevin age without an attempt at its precise identification; the meaning of the sancti reges Hungariae iconography has been interpreted as the expression of the national values that the holy kings had embodied since the beginnings of their depiction as a trio. The goal of the thesis is to identify a more precise time for the concept’s emergence, to emphasize the iconographic similarities and differences of the separate and collective depiction of the three holy kings, and to recover the meaning that the frescoes had when they were created. The conclusion is, first, that the occurrence of the holy kings’ trio in the second half of the thirteenth century belongs to the beata stirps Arpadiana context, which also included the female sacred representatives of the dynasty, but the exclusive and politically charged concept of the sancti reges Hungariae is the result of the consistent strategy of King Louis the Great and his influential mother to promote the royal trio around the mid-fourteenth century. Second, I conclude that, although he was only a prince in his real life and separate iconography, St. Emeric finally became king in the sancti reges Hungariae iconography, where he is depicted with the royal dignity’s attributes (crown, scepter, and crucifer orb). Third and most significant, not all extant mural representations of the holy kings of Hungary should be judged as being the result of a political decision despite the common conceptual association of St. Stephen, St. Emeric, and St. Ladislas. As indicated by their dating and extrinsic characteristics (iconographic context and low visibility), the depiction of the holy kings on the pillars of the triumphal arch pre-dates the mid-fourteenth century and has an exclusively theological meaning: it emphasizes the role of St. Stephen as the apostle of the Hungarian Church (sanctissimus rex Stephanus ungarorum apostolus) and St. Ladislas as its defender (columpna milicie christianae). Political aspects began to pervade this type of representation in the first decades of the fifteenth century, when King Sigismund of Luxemburg made St. Sigismund, his personal Bohemian patron saint, the companion of the Hungarian royal saints, St. Stephen, St. Emeric, and St. Ladislas.

The kings of East Anglia and Northumbria both died at the hands of the Great Heathen Army in the late 860s; one became a renowned martyr saint and one a villain. The latter, the Northumbrian Ælla, also became the antagonist in legends concerning the ancestors of the Uí Ímair, principal successors of the northern Great Army and leaders of the tenth-century Insular Norse.  According to a previously neglected text, 'De Northumbria post Britannos', another of northern England’s great dynasties claimed descent from Ælla. The Eadwulfings of Bamburgh were based in northern Northumbria, and appear to have gained leadership of their political community in the late ninth or early tenth century. With the rival position held by the Uí Ímair in the south, it is possible that Ælla’s later reputation and associated legends arose as a bi-product of tenth-century political conflict.

This article will show the role of free women in the San Benito de Palermo sisterhood founded in 1646. This research paper explores the social role in such a corporation: the composition by gender, the organizational structure in the system’s positions, the contribution of its female members -“cofradas”- in alms collection, their attitude and pious, festive and ludic behaviours in festivities, solemn parades and processions. This work is founded on their accounting books, registries and election meeting acts performed during the XVIIIth century. It is its goal to evaluate the role of women in brotherhoods and sisterhoods established by blacks and mulattoes, specifically those ones devoted to San Benito de Palermo, whose main feature is having a larger female membership as in those other found in most of the Hispanic world, where San Miguel el Grande, in New Spain’s Bajío, was not an exception. Current historiography requires more case studies to confront the established premises and give new insights to evaluate, as in this case, the importance of women in the operation of a religious corporation during the Ancien Regime.

At the center of piety there stands an image of the ideal life; the prescribed paths of virtue and spiritual cultivation are reflected in the radiance of a paradigmatic persona. And just as religions the world over have developed both discrete and common orientations to sacred time, space, and text-so too has the image of the holy man functioned as a powerful axial point in the demarcation of sacrality and cultural ideals.1 But more than anything else, * It is a special pleasure for me to thank my father, Michael Fishbane, for his learned and very helpful comments on the penultimate draft of this essay. The Bamiléké of Cameroon have long believed that after the corpses of their ancestors have rotted they can be exhumed and the skulls used to communicate with the spirits of the dead, as well as their godhead, to receive spiritual guidance. The religious rite, which has necromancy at its fulcrum, is of ancient origin and the Bamiléké have practiced it for thousands of years. Urbanisation has impinged upon the Skull Cult as it is forbidden to move ancestral skulls, which must at all times remain in the natal village of the deceased. Nevertheless, city-dwellers who are beset by misfortune may travel to the birth places of their ancestors to honour them and perform rites to propitiate them. However, although urbanisation has adversely affected the practice, it is the Catholic Church that has most infringed upon the Skull Cult. Due to pressure from the officiants of the local Catholic Church, which has labelled the skull cult 'barbaric' and even Satanic.

Ch. 8. Celebrating New Saints in Rome and Across the Globe Pamela M. Jones, University of Massachusetts Boston Men and women recognized for exemplary holiness had been revered as saints since the early Christian era, but it was in the late 16th and 17th centuries that the papacy took definitive control and made Rome the center of official sanctity. This period witnessed the standardization of the processes of beatification and canonization, which decreed the ranks of "blessed" and ultimately "saint." Canonization ceremonies took place in St. Peter's, where temporary "theaters" were constructed and embellished by paintings, sculptures, and inscriptions. In addition to providing an overview of the scholarship on official holiness and related festivities, this chapter suggests exciting new avenues of research aimed at advancing understanding of the ways in which ephemeral programs in Rome and across the globe promoted saints' worldwide cults, particularized saints for specific audiences, engaged with religious and geopolitical issues, and afforded individual popes the opportunity to marshal new saints for their own ends.

The book includes the transcription of the Chronicles of the Monastery of St. Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome by Alessia Lirosi (pages 91-310) but also a wide essay by Alessia Lirosi (pages 31-90) and a Foreword by Professor Elena Brambilla of Università Statale di Milano (pages 9-29).

The Passio of St Sebastian and his companions published by Migne in PG 116 (cols. 793-816) under the name of Symeon Metaphrastes is in reality an abridgment of the text found in Metaphrastic December meno¬logia.  The source used by Metaphrastes has apparently not survived.  Some elements of it are, how¬ever, found in the canon composed in the previous century by Joseph the Hymnographer (probably † 860) in honour of St Sebastian and his companions.  The text of the Metaphrastic Passio is edited here for the first time on the basis of eight witnesses of the 11th century, while a new edition of the abridgment is given at the foot of the pages which contains a much improved transcription of the sole witness (MS. Paris. gr. 1195, 14th century, ff. 11r-17v) published by Migne.

This essay analyses literary and artistic works that are specifically tied to the experience or anticipation of plague by their content and purpose; that is, they contain direct reference to the disease, visually or verbally, and are created for plague-related aims, whether commemorative, prophetic, didactic or prophylactic.

This paper analyzes some tales of the genre named furta sacra, written in Italy during the Middle Ages. After proposing a definition that can describe the specific nature of this genre within the broader framework of the category of translationes, the focus is on the cast of characters. In particular, this essay takes into consideration the writing strategies and the narrative functions linked to the key players of the furtum: the costumer and the thief, the helper and the tomb keeper, the opponent and the antagonist, the saint, the robbed community, and the community of the adventus. The goal of this paper is to reflect on the writing mechanisms of the hagiographer, particularly related to the confirmation of God's intervention in the translation, the authenticity of the relics, and the presence of the saint in his new 'home'.

Attraverso testi e immagini Laura Fenelli ricostruisce una storia iniziata nel IV secolo dopo Cristo che vede l'asceta trasformarsi da santo eremita e poi taumaturgo a santo contadino e protettore degli animali.

Emergono in queste pagine «i meccanismi attraverso i quali si produce una devozione e un ordine religioso si innesta, talea floridissima, su un culto già radicato da secoli, e lo plasma, lo modifica, lo influenza a tal punto da renderlo, a prima vista, quasi irriconoscibile. Quello che la storia e le rappresentazioni dell'anacoreta della Tebaide, Antonio, dimostrano con chiarezza è il complicato processo attraverso il quale anche dalle immagini, costruite per specifiche esigenze di devozione, a memoria di attività economiche e terapeutiche, nascono nuovi testi e nuove leggende, pronte, ancora una volta, a dar luogo a innumerevoli raffigurazioni, in un continuo processo biunivoco di vasi perennemente comunicanti tra loro».

EN: The article following a solicitation by Gennaro Luongo, recently deceased, deals with the hagiographic dossier of Agnese. The author traces it between history and legend, literary documents and monumental evidences, iconography and devotional practices. This allows her to highlight the transformations (modifications) and continuous re-functionalizations of the character, as well as to advance some hypotheses on/regarding the reasons that presided over these continuous re-reading processes.
ITA: L’articolo, seguendo una sollecitazione di Gennaro Luongo, recentemente scomparso, si interessa al dossier agiografico di Agnese. L’autrice lo ripercorre fra storia e leggenda, documenti letterari e testimonianze monumentali, iconografia e pratiche devozionali. Ciò le consente di mettere in evidenza le trasformazioni e continue ri-funzionalizzazioni del personaggio, nonché di avanzare alcune ipotesi sulle ragioni che presiedettero a questi continui processi di rilettura.

St. Birgitta of Sweden (d. 1373) is one of the most celebrated female visionaries and authors of the Middle Ages and a central figure in the history of late-medieval religion. An aristocratic widow, Birgitta left her native country in 1349 and settled in Rome, where she established herself as an outspoken critic of the Avignon Papacy and an advocate of spiritual and ecclesiastical reform. Birgitta founded a new monastic order, and her major work, The Heavenly Book of Revelations, circulated widely in a variety of monastic, reformist, and intellectual milieus following her death.
This volume offers an introduction to the saint and the reception of her work written by experts from various disciplines. In addition to acquainting the reader with the state of the scholarship, the study also presents fresh interpretations and new perspectives on Birgitta and the sources for her life and writings.

De nombreux textes anciens sont abrégés pour intégrer de nouvelles collections. Ce phénomène est en partie responsable du relatif désintérêt des historiens à leur égard : à quoi bon s'intéresser à ces abrégés alors qu'il reste tant à découvrir dans les grands légendiers du Moyen Âge central, et qu'on commence à peine à mieux connaître les tout premiers manuscrits conservés ? L'objectif de ce livre est de mieux saisir la fonction sociale du manuscrit hagiographique, à une période, celle du « christianisme fl amboyant », caractérisée par l'accumulation et la multiplication des dévotions. En se focalisant sur les Pays-Bas méridionaux et une large France septentrionale, une région traversée par la devotio moderna et d'intenses dynamiques religieuses, son objectif est aussi de comprendre ensemble les légendiers latins et vernaculaires, en moyen néerlandais comme dans les parlers d'oïl. Il s'agit de saisir les conditions matérielles de la circulation des textes hagiographiques, mais aussi l'usage de ces manuscrits, dans le cadre de la pastorale et des pratiques cultuelles collectives comme dans celui de l'affi rmation de l'individu à la fi n du Moyen Âge.

Ce travail de recherche sur les martyrs et les chrétiens qui ont souffert de la persécution, pendant la période de Julien l’Apostat, à travers les textes historiographiques, hagiographiques et hymnographiques, a démontré que les sources en question contiennent une pléthore d’informations et de témoignages à ce propos. Tout ce qui précède prouve, de manière évidente, que nous pouvons en effet parler des martyrs de l’époque de Julien ainsi que de persécution, du moins indirecte, que l’Apostat avait lancée pendant la courte période de son règne.
En effet, à partir de l’étude des sources, et surtout celles historiques et hagiologiques, il en découle que Julien n’était pas seulement nostalgique de l’ancienne religion et de l’ancienne civilisation grecques, il ne s’est pas limité non plus qu’ à des ordonnances antichrétiennes. Bien au contraire, il a lancé une persécution contre les chrétiens, qui a été marquée par des atrocités et des condamnations à mort, sans qu’ il y ait substantiellement de différence avec les persécutions des premiers siècles.
Les martyrs qui ont souffert à cette époque-là (361-363) ne sont pas particulièrement connus, surtout du fait que leur culte n’était pas spécialement répandu. Quant à leur nombre exact, il est impossible de le déterminer avec précision en raison des différents témoignages à ce sujet que les textes nous livrent. Cependant, nous pourrions supposer que durant cette époque plus de quatre-vingt saints ont dû subir le martyre.
En ce qui concerne les régions où ont eu lieu les tortures, nous observons que la majorité d’entre elles se sont déroulées à Antioche, en Syrie, étant donné le long séjour de Julien à cette ville. Toutefois, des tortures ont été notées à d’autres régions, comme par exemple à Césarée, en Cappadoce, à Ankara, en Galatée et ailleurs. Notons que les supplices n’avaient pas toujours lieu en présence du roi. C’est-à-dire qu’il y a des cas où, ses délégués ou ses représentants dans différentes villes ont procédé à des exécutions de Chrétiens de leur propre initiative ou suite à ses ordres.
Un autre point, auquel nous jugeons utile de nous référer, est le fait que les martyrs ne provenaient pas tous de la classe sociale. Comme il apparaît des faits précédents, le martyre a été subi non seulement par les laïques mais aussi par les clercs et les moines, et pas seulement par des hommes mais également par des femmes ainsi que par des enfants.
Concernant l’année de leur reconnaissance en tant que saints par l’Eglise, les sources ne livrent pas d’informations. De plus, dans les premiers recueils de célébrations de l’ Orient on fait rarement référence au jour de la célébration de leur fête, contrairement à ceux du IX siècle et après, où est inscrite distinctement leur mémoire sans aucune exception. Il est à noter que pour des nombreux martyrs chaque Synaxaire ou Rituel peut représenter différentes célébrations traditionnelles.
En ce qui concerne la chancellerie au sujet des saints, nous pouvons schématiser à priori les choses suivantes:
1. Pour les sources historiques (histoire ecclésiastique – historiographie byzantine) nous constatons que les témoignages relatifs sont classés en trois catégories: a) La première contient de simples références aux martyrs, où est donné uniquement leur nom sans autres commentaires ou descriptions. b) À la deuxième catégorie, appartiennent les informations auxquelles sont inscrits, non seulement le nom du martyr et le lieu de son supplice, mais aussi le type de supplice qu’il avait subi. c) La troisième catégorie, concerne ces témoignages qui sont plus étendus que les précédents et comportent des éléments détaillés sur le supplice, l’apologie du martyr ou, rarement bien sûr, quelques éléments biographiques du saint.
Nous avons considéré, également, le consensus des sources historiographiques quant aux informations qu’ elles livrent sur les événements relatifs au supplice de chaque saint. Cependant, nous avons relevé une différence importante au sujet du nombre de martyrs que chacune inscrit. Plus précisément, les premiers historiens font référence à un nombre de martyrs relativement restreint contrairement aux historiens postérieurs, qui avai-ent probablement plusieurs témoignages devant eux durant l’écriture de leur œuvre, pris même dans des textes hagiographiques, avec comme résultat d’inscrire des informations sur plusieurs martyrs.
2. Le deuxième ensemble de sources qui a été utilisé, ce sont les textes hagiographiques et surtout les Passions et ensuite les Synaxaires. En ce qui concerne ces textes nous pouvons remarquer ce qui suit:
i. Le nombre de textes qui correspondent à chaque saint est varié. Ainsi, pour certains d’entre eux nous avons trouvé plusieurs textes et leurs variantes, alors que pour certains autres nous avons puisé des informations que dans les Synaxaires, puisque, soit les références à leurs Passions sont perdues soit il n’y a jamais eu de mémoire écrit sur eux.
ii. Au sujet des martyrs de l’époque que nous avons examiné, on trouve des textes des trois générations chronologiques: ceux qui précèdent Siméon le Métaphraste, ceux traduits par lui-même et les plus modernes. La majorité d’entre eux appartiennent à la première génération, c'est-à-dire à celle d’avant les traductions. Parmi ces textes qui sont chronologiquement plus proches de la vie des saints, la plus grande partie appartient au genre de Passions épiques. C'est-à-dire que leurs auteurs, qui sont en majeure partie des inconnus, adoptent dans leurs récits des modèles de l’hagiologie épique et décrivent le martyre des Chrétiens en fonction d’un rituel déterminé. Etant donné que leur but est de glorifier à chaque fois un martyr et de montrer sa vaillance, ils ne fournissent pas d’ informations historiques exactes, ils ne citent pas non plus une forme de vie du saint glorifié. Ils se limitent aux faits qui concernent son martyre et ont toujours comme point de départ les événements liés à son arrestation. Pour cette raison, nous ne pouvons pas puiser des témoignages de ces textes au sujet de la vie de chaque saint avant son martyre.
3. Enfin, dans le troisième ensemble de sources appartiennent les textes hymnographiques, le nombre desquels varie d’ un saint à l’autre. Au sujet de ces textes nous avons observé qu’ ils ne comportent pas d’ informations particulières par rapport aux martyrs étudiés. Les hymnographes, ayant sans doute devant eux les textes hagiographiques, ont composé des hymnes, pour glorifier la vertu et la vaillance des saints, esquissant ainsi de la sorte leur Synaxaire.
En concluant, nous exprimons notre conviction que nos futurs travaux de recherche sur les textes hagiiographiques et hymnographiques inédits, concernant les martyrs de l’époque de Julien, vont apporter de nouveaux éléments à leur sujet, de manière à créer un dossier plus complet pour chacun d’eux, enrichissant en même temps nos connaissances, encore plus, sur l’ empereur Julien, sa personnalité et son époque.
