The central focus of this paper is the notion that the home can provide a locale in which people can work at attaining a sense of ontological security in a world that at times is experienced as threatening and uncontrollable. The paper builds on and develops the ideas of Giddens and Saunders on ontological security and seeks to break down and operationalise the concept and explore it through a set of empirical data drawn from interviews with a group of older New Zealand home owners. The extent to which home and home life meets the conditions for the maintenance of ontological security is assessed through an exploration of home as the site of constancy in the social and material environment; home as a spatial context in which the day to day routines of human existence are performed; home as a site free from the surveillance that is part of the contemporary world which allows for a sense of control that is missing in other locales; and home as a secure base around which identities are...

This article explores the importance of non-capitalist space within the global political economy. The issue of how to categorise and understand space in so-called peripheral regions such as Latin America has been a contentious one. Whilst many radical analyses have focused on the dynamics of capitalism in relation to the geography of development, explaining how it has been able to survive and grow, this article makes the case for a more multi-linear theoretical framework with which to view the socioeconomic landscape. This is inspired not only by the later writings of Marx but also the specific Marxian class analysis of those involved in Rethinking Marxism. Via a focus on Oaxaca in southern Mexico, this article highlights both the survival and the recreation of spaces of non-capitalism, and provides an argument for why we should consider these to be important for transformative action more broadly, whilst also discussing their potential limitations.

Brazil has endured multiple political, economic, and environmental crises-and now the COVID-19 pandemic-which have drawn social inequalities into razor sharp relief. This contribution analyzes the resilience of rural families facing these crises in southern Bahia. These families have benefited from various redistributive policies over the years, including redistributive land reforms (RLRs), conditional cash transfers (CCTs), and recent emergency aid (EA) payments related to the pandemic. Each (re)distributive approach involves different notions of distributive justice informed by competing background theories of "the good, " which hold implications for concepts of resilience. Drawing on long-term research with RLR communities in Bahia, this article considers the gains achieved by different redistributive programs. Families who acquired land through RLR projects appear more resilient, especially in the face of crisis.

Rapid urbanisation in Somalia, as in many other war-torn countries, is driven by in-migration of displaced people who are often amassed in camps. Although such camps become institutionalised sites of exclusion where ‘bare life’ is generated and disposed, they are also characterised by socially messy and continuously evolving relations of space, power, violence and displacement. The article draws on fieldwork with displaced people in Somali cities to analyse claims to property and (often violent) competition to uphold them in contestation for sovereignty. Comparing two cities, Mogadishu and Bosaaso, we show how a broad range of international and local actors, including displaced people themselves, negotiate (urban) property and establish relations that guide and foster political authority, while rendering the lives and livelihoods of displaced people precarious and insecure. In property, politics and the economy intersect, and property relations are therefore subject to struggles for both power and profit. We underscore how sovereign power produces spaces of indistinction, but emphasise that property as an analytical category contributes to understandings of sovereignty. Furthermore, propertying as social practice draws attention to the way sovereignty emerges and is connected to the market. This enables the differentiations of forms of sovereignty and draws attention to how it is negotiated, openly challenged or silently undermined.

In this concluding chapter we will not seek to summarise all the points made throughout the volume. Rather we bring out from these discussions some practi- cal proposals for how the law might move forward. Three models for reform will be outlined:
– The law should recognise that human bodily material is subject to the laws of property that apply to other ‘things’. The tissue could then be owned, sold, stolen, commercially exploited, given away, and so on and these dealings would be governed by the developed principles of property, tort, criminal and other areas of law relevant to property. We shall call this the ‘property model’.
– Parliament should pass a statute governing the storage, use and control of bod- ily material, reflecting a balance between individual and communal interests in different contexts. We shall call this the ‘statutory model’.
– The courts should develop an ad hoc approach to bodily material allowing the case law to grow organically. We shall call this the ‘ad hoc model’.
These three models will be developed in more detail shortly.1
We will indicate the issues which all models need to address and those specific to each. The aim is not to fully flesh out any proposal, but to set out clearly the issues which will be raised with each model. Before undertaking that task, a few further comments on the academic debates will be useful.

In South Africa, the right to evict held by a property-holder is not merely incidental to property rights. The exercise of the right to evict must be understood against the bloody history of land dispossession through forced removals and evictions. These removals and evictions were initially effected through the barrel of the gun and trickery; later followed by an oppressive assemblage of laws. Evictions, which are generally seen as the logical corollary of the right to exclude, cannot be carried out without considering the historical injustices of colonialism and apartheid that displaced many Africans. Sections 25 (the property clause) and 26(3) (the right not to be arbitrarily evicted from one’s home) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 recognise this imperative and actively attempt to secure property rights for those who have historically been deprived of, and denied, these rights.

What is the legal status of adult children living with their parents? Do parents have any additional duties when they rescind permission for their child to live with them? Property and family scholars have not addressed this important issue. This article fills the void. Instead of treating people who live together as strangers, owing no legal obligations to one another, I argue that under certain conditions living with others creates a property community in the home. One thinks of the viewpoint and the visual construction as one's own, but the land and objects making up this view are one's property only by analogy. Yet, the etymolog­ical origin of 'appropriation' is found in the discourse on property. Separating the legal sense of the acquisition of land from the aesthetic sense of viewing it is fundamental to the concept of the picturesque and the devel­opment of landscape design. In the early nineteenth century, Humphry Repton described his landscaping technique as one of appropriation. In doing so he struggled to maintain an aesthetic signification for the word. This is because both the demand for landscape parks and the means of cre­ating them were based on new forms of title to land that granted the owner exclusivity of access.

Democracy in the Woods: Environmental Conservation and Social Justice in India, Tanzania, and Mexico

How do societies negotiate the apparently competing agendas of environmental protection and social justice? Why do some countries perform much better than others?

Democracy in the Woods addresses these question by examining land rights conflicts—and the fate of forest-dependent peasants—in the context of the different forest property regimes in India, Tanzania, and Mexico. These three countries are prominent in the scholarship and policy debates about national forest policies and land conflicts associated with international support for nature conservation. This unique comparative study of the trajectories of their national forestland regimes, challenges the received wisdom that redistributive policies necessarily undermine the goals of environmental protection.  It shows instead that national environmental protection efforts take on either an inclusive (as in Mexico) or an exclusive form (as in Tanzania and, for the most part, in India), depending on whether dominant political parties are compelled to create structures of political intermediation, which help channel peasant demands for forest and land rights into the policy process.

The political analysis of the control over and the use of nature presented in this book opens up new avenues for reflecting on how legacies of the past and international interventions interject into domestic political processes to produce specific configurations of outcomes of environmental protection and social justice.

This book offers three different tests of this theory of political origins of forestland regimes: First, India’s most radical forestland reforms became possible because of the opening of a unique political opportunity structure, which enabled forestland rights movements to successfully press for long-awaited institutional reforms needed to address land rights conflicts.  Second, it successfully explains the rather counter-intuitive local outcomes of the programs for formalization of land rights in India, Tanzania, and Mexico. Third, it offers a coherent explanation of why each of these three countries proposes a significantly different distribution of the benefits of forest-based climate change mitigation programs being developed under the auspices of the United Nations. Dynamic tire properties, specifically the forces and moments generated under different circumstances, have been found to be important to motorcycle dynamics. A similar situation may be expected to exist for bicycles, but limited bicycle tire data and a lack of the tools necessary to measure it may contribute to its absence in bicycle dynamics analyses. This paper describes tools developed to measure these bicycle tire properties and presents some of the findings. Cornering stiffness, also known as sideslip and lateral slip stiffness, of either the front or rear tires, has been found to influence both the weave and wobble modes of motorcycles. Measuring this property requires holding the tire at a fixed orientation, camber and steer angles, with respect to the pavement and its direction of travel, and then measuring the lateral force generated as the tire rolls forward. In 1776 Jefferson said that the most important change he made to make Virginia laws more democratic was his bill to alter Virginia's inheritance law. His bill allowed for land and goods of those who died without a will to be equally divided among his or her children (with a life interest of part of the estate to a wife or husband) and the breaking of entails. Entails had locked a great portion of the land into hereditary descent by primogeniture: on the eve of the revolution about 3/4 of the land in Virginia's tidewater was locked into entails. Such restrictions were called "feudal" by contemporaries: It is especially interesting because Virginia laws allowed enslaved people and their progeny to be "attached" to estates. This article challenges received scholarship (pre-1997, when it appeared) to argue that what contemporaries called feudalism was alive and well in colonial Virginia and the revolution brought some radical reforms. What it meant for enslaved people was more complex, since they could afterwards be more easily sold and divided among the children of the testator.

In this study, erbia (Er2O3)-doped Bi2O3 ceramics were prepared from sol–gel derived nanocrystalline powders. The morphological properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out in order to characterize the phase and crystal structure of the powder samples. Temperature dependent electrical properties were determined by thermogravimetry/differential thermal analyzer (TG/DTA) and 4-point probe techniques. The stable fluorite face centered cubic δ-type phase was observed at room temperature from the XRD result, which was supported by the DTA and temperature dependent electrical conductivity measurements. Electrical conductivity results indicate that there is a transition approximately at 650 °C, which can be attributed to an order–disorder transition (ODT). The activation energy values obtained from the Arrhenius approach for heating and cooling process were presented. Two regimes, corresponding to high temperature region (HTR) and low temperature region (LTR), were observed. As a result of morphological changes during the ODT, the electrical conductivity modifies and the activation energies are different for studied sample at HTR and LTR.

and economic matters to play in our lives. If Kean Birch is correct
in his observation that certain industries like biotechnology have abandoned the market and its principles in favor of capitalizing on their assets instead of selling them, and if Fabian Muniesa et al. are right about connecting assets to what is commonly called “capitalism” (as opposed to “market economy”), we need to inquire into the relationship between the nature of a good, including its economic and wider social effects. But how to approach things as elusive as assets?
