Ian McEwan’s Solar has been the subject of many a debate, mostly due to its controversial representation of climate change’s cause and the solution offered for the global disaster. The paper explores the novel’s judgment over climate change’s fountainhead and the protagonist’s vain project to save the earth. The scope of the study encompasses the narrator’s accounts of the characters and events in the story. In the light of David Harvey’s notion of ‘spatial fix,’ the study, through a close reading of the novel, focuses on the context within which the story unfolds in order to elaborate on the transformation of the earth into a globalized monolithic built environment called ‘the planet’ for the sake of efficiency and free flow of capital and commodities. It also argues that the protagonist’s solar energy generation project is a neo-liberal initiative to replace a less lucrative production mode and tackle the system’s critical spell of overaccumulation, rather than global warming.

Starch–lipid complexes were prepared using lauric acid (LA) and three varieties of maize starches differing in amylose content i.e. waxy maize starch (WMS), normal maize starch (NMS) and high amylose maize starch (Hylon V). Starch suspensions were heated below the pasting temperature and then complexed. Effects of amylose content, incubation temperature and LA on the physicochemical properties of swelled starch–LA complexes were investigated. Swelled Hylon V and NMS were easy to form starch–LA complex. Lipid content revealed that the increasing incubation temperature and high amylose content can improve the formation of starch–LA complex. Light microscopy displayed that the Hylon V-LA and NMS–LA complex incubated at higher temperature had irregularly-shaped fragments with strong birefringence. X-ray diffraction pattern of Hylon V-LA and NMS–LA complex changed to V-type polymorphs except for NMS incubated at low temperature (60 °C). The relative crystallinity was depended on the amyl...

The aging process is characterized by gradual changes to an organism’s macromolecules, which negatively impacts biological processes. The complex macromolecular structure of chromatin regulates all nuclear processes requiring access to the DNA sequence. As such, maintenance of chromatin structure is an integral component to deter premature aging. In this review, we describe current research that links aging to chromatin structure. Histone modifications influence chromatin compaction and gene expression and undergo many changes during aging. Histone protein levels also decline during aging, dramatically affecting chromatin structure. Excitingly, lifespan can be extended by manipulations that reverse the age-dependent changes to chromatin structure, indicating the pivotal role chromatin structure plays during aging.

Abstract: Presents a critical corrective to Dworkin's flawed theory of rights. Presents a typology for correct materialist analysis of natural rights and positive laws. Explicits qualities of the right to food, a basic alimentary right flanked by the rights to water, clothing, shelter, and supplemented by the psychological rights to one's own language, culture, education and development.

Abstract: The legal realists charged that not only did law not serve substantive justice, it was in fact a sham: a theatrical rationalisation to obscure, justify, and deploy power. However the realists also pointed that this sham justice could be turned around: the same methods that served injustice could be used for radical reform! This article and its accompanying program explores the realists' thesis with a view to looking beyond the law to understand what driving forces actually lead courts to reach their outcomes. As such it addresses the law not within ...
