Condition dependence

A new metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxial (MOVPE) reactor-cell design has been developed to grow on 3-in.-diameter substrates. This was required to produce uniform, fully doped heterostructures needed for array producibility and wafer-scale processing compatibility. The reactor has demonstrated epitaxial growth of HgCdTe (MCT) with good morphology onto both GaAs and GaAs on Si wafers. The density of surface-growth defects, typical of MOVPE growth, has been reduced to −2 at a sufficient yield to make the production of low cluster-defect, two-dimensional (2-D) arrays possible. The new horizontal reactor cell uses substrate rotation to achieve improved uniformity and is able to incorporate substrates up to 4-in. diameter. Good compositional and thickness uniformity was achieved on epilayers grown on 3-in.-diameter, low-cost GaAs and GaAs on Si wafers. Sufficient uniformity has been achieved to produce 12 sites of full-TV format 2-D arrays per slice. To yield the benefits of heterostructure design, the MCT epilayers also needed to demonstrate efficient and uniform activation of both arsenic (acceptor) and iodine (donor) dopants. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and Hall assessment showed that the uniformity of As and I doping was ±10%. Fully doped heterostructures have been grown to investigate the device performance in the 3–5 µm and 8–12 µm infrared bands. The 2-D array performance has shown that at 180 K near-background-limited performance (BLIP) diodes have been produced in the 3–5 µm band.

Males of many animals have more than a single exaggerated secondary sexual character, but inter-specific variability in the number of ornaments has never been explained. We examine three hypotheses that may account for the presence of multiple ornaments. First, the multiple message hypothesis proposes that each display reflects a single property of the overall quality of an animal. This is likely to be the case for ornaments that respond to condition on different time scales. Second, the redundant signal hypothesis suggests that each ornament gives a partial indication of condition. Females pay attention to several sex traits because in combination they provide a better estimate of general condition than does any single ornament. The redundant signal hypothesis predicts that (i) multiple ornaments should be particularly common among taxa with relatively uncostly and fine-tuned female choice, and (ii) females pay equal attention to the expression of all the secondary sex traits in order to obtain an estimate of overall male condition. Finally, the unreliable signal hypothesis argues that some ornaments are unreliable indicators of overall condition and are only maintained because they are relatively uncostly to produce and there is a weak female preference for them. This predicts that (i) multiple sexual ornaments should be particularly common in taxa with the most intense sexual selection (i.e. lekking and other polygynous taxa), and (ii) there should be more evidence for condition dependence in ornaments of species with single as opposed to multiple ornaments. Both the latter predictions are supported by data on feather ornaments in birds.

We explored properties of whole brain networks based on multivariate spectral analysis of human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time-series measured in 90 cortical and subcortical subregions in each of five healthy volunteers studied in the (no-task) resting state. We note that undirected graphs representing conditional independence between multivariate time-series can be more readily approached in the frequency domain than the time domain. Estimators of partial coherency and normalized partial mutual information ϕ , an integrated measure of partial coherence over an arbitrary frequency band, are applied. Using these tools, we replicate the prior observations that bilaterally homologous brain regions tend to be strongly connected and functional connectivity is generally greater at low frequencies [0.0004, 0.1518 Hz]. Avian plumage colors have emerged recently as model systems for investigating the types of information that can be signaled by showy sexual displays in animals. In many species, the brightness of carotenoid-based plumage reflects the health and condition of individuals and is used in mate selection. The information contained in melanin-based and structurally based ornamental colors in birds is less well resolved, however. We subjected male house sparrows Passer domesticus and brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater to stressful nutritional conditions during molt to test the hypothesis that melanin- and structurally based plumage colors are nutritionally condition-dependent. We analyze the incidence of ad valorem and unit excise taxes in an oligopolistic industry with differentiated products and price-setting (Bertrand) firms. Both taxes may be passed on to consumers by more than 100 percent, and an increase in the tax rate can increase short run firm profits (and hence the long run number of firms). We provide summary conditions for these effects to arise. The conditions depend on demand curvatures and are written in elasticity form. Surprisingly, the analysis largely corroborates Cournot results with homogeneous demand.

The evolution of conspicuous coloration is often hypothesized to be driven by sexual selection, where colour traits may function as honest signals of individual abilities in male contest competition and female choice. However, game theory models suggest that colourful badges (i.e. energetically cheap signals) may have no function in sexually selected contests, because the value of the contested resource is too high relative to the costs of fighting. We investigated this assertion by experimentally staging male contests over nest sites (a crucial resource for attracting females) in old (>/=2 years) male collared flycatchers, Ficedula albicollisMales with a relatively large white forehead patch (i.e. a condition-dependent plumage trait displayed in male contests) enjoyed a competitive advantage in disputes over experimentally vacated territories. No other measured morphological variable predicted the outcome of such a dispute. Furthermore, the winners of the disputes acquired a female more quickly than did the losers. Thus, our results suggest that the white forehead patch of male collared flycatchers may function as a badge of status that is also used in sexually selected contests over resources.
