The need to share resources in a computer system arises due to economics or the nature of some applications. In such cases it is necessary to facilitate sharing of long-term devices and their data. This could be done by means of Distributed File Systems. A distributed file system allows users of physically distributed computers to share data and storage resources by using a common file system. In this report we will briefly introduce the Distributed File System technology, its features and terminologies. We will also present its architecture and discuss its classical and parallel models such as the Sun Network File System (NFS) and the Andrew File System (AFS). Finally we will discuss some case studies of distributed file systems such as the Google distributed file system (GDFS) and the open source Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) of Apache.
