Smart grid is an innovating solution for the electrical systems that consists in an integrated architecture for all system components, including generation, transmission, distribution, and users. This architecture is strongly based on telecommunications networks with potential and inherent advantages such as greater overall eficiency and system-wide reliability, providing communication among intelligent devices. This short-course explains the main smart grid concepts and challenges and explores the IEC 61850 standard which, in turn, standardizes the communications among devices. The IEC 61850 and other relevant protocols are the basic building blocks of a communication network in a smart grid style. The challenges discussed include a new generation of telecommunications network for the smart grid together with security, management, control, quality of service, and migration issues.

The paper presents the state of the art and the future trend of the Energy Management. The “Energy Management” term is often used to indicate one or more techniques adopted in the new more electric aircraft, to avoid the generator overload. The designer can use four different approaches, or a combination of them to reduce the over sizing of the generators. The first method regulate the energy exchanged between sources in order to share the power between them. The second method uses storage elements (battery or supercap) to limit the peak power. This elements are connected to the power bus through DC/DC converters that are in charge of the power flux regulation and work like active filters. The third method regulate the loads, or switch them ON/OFF limiting the generator overload. The last method works with the fast reconfigurable network and distribute loads between sources in order to charge each generator within its capability. Some example of experimental works are also provided in the work.

Distributed energy resources (DERs) play an important role in the future vision of distribution energy networks. This paper with the aim of promoting DERs role in energy markets proposes a new framework for the optimal bidding strategy of a Technical Virtual Power Plant (TVPP) in different markets. In the proposed framework, it is assumed that the TVPP energy power is distributed throughout a multi-carrier energy network (MCEN) which consists of district heat networks (DHNs) and a distributed electricity network (DEN). In the MCEN, CHP units are the linkage between DHNs and DEN. With the goal of maximizing the profit of TVPP in different local and wholesale energy markets, a bi-level optimization model is formularized to set scheduling of DERs. As the upper level, the TVPP sets the schedule of its DERs considering technical constraints of DHNs and DENs. In the lower level, however, the TVPP runs an optimization problem to estimate the energy price in wholesale energy markets considering the forecasted bids of other rivals. The proposed model is implemented on a test system and the results confirms that the local market creates an opportunity for CHP owner, TVPP and the heat consumers to make more profit as well as achieving better technical performance for distribution energy systems.

A computationally efficient Technique based on more efficient algorithm is proposed to estimate and remove noise impulses from the signals (could be speech or audio signals). The proposed method is based on estimation through Compressed Sensing Technique and Lasso (Least Absolute Shrinkage and selection Operator) algorithm. This algorithm is also successfully been used to remove noise from the Digital images. The LASSO minimizes the resultant sum of squares object to the sum of absolute values of coefficients being less than a constant. Compressed sensing techniques proved much efficient in estimating the noise. SPARISITY theory and Incoherence saved computational time much in estimation process. Using LASSO noise is balanced by producing coefficients which are shrinkable to zero and some coefficients exactly equal to zero.
