Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamamı’nın, kadınlar kısmında
görebileceğiniz sıra dışı bir sergi vardı. İçerideki işin, İyi bir
komşu temasıyla başlayan Bienal’e kafa tutan bir yanı
olduğunu, kapıdan girerken bize “defol” diyen
-üstelik serginin adı Willkommen (Hoş geldin) Varsayımı
olduğu hâlde- anlamak pek de zor değildi. Sanatçı ikilisi Elmgreen & Dragset’in küratörlüğünü üstlendiği bienal, komşuluk anlayışımızın tüm dünyada sınırlar ve kapı komşulukları düzeyinde hızla değiştiği bir dönemde komşuluk kavramını tartışıyor. "İyi bir komşu nasıl olmalıdır?" sorularının yer aldığı afişler, İstanbul’un ve başka ülke başkentlerinin duvarlarında yer bulurken iyi komşular kadar, iyi olmayan komşuların
da nasıl kimseler olabileceğine dair gizli cevapları almamızı sağlıyor. 32 ülkeden 56 sanatçının, komşuluk hallerini her yönüyle ele aldığı bienaldeki en kışkırtıcı çalışmalardan biri de kötü komşuların varlığını ilân eden Willkommen Varsayımı ile Stephen G. Rhodes’in sergisiydi. Bu metin iyi komşuların aslında toplumsal birlikteliği baltalayan iyi niyet örtüsü altındaki yaklaşımlarını sorguluyor ve bienalin sorusunu bambaşka bir açıdan cevaplama amacı taşıyor.

In their exhibition ‘Tomorrow’ artists Elmgreen & Dragset display post-imperial Britain as a highly elaborate fiction which they stage at crucial moments to highlight its tensions, mysteries and imperfections. Individuals, real and imagined, tangible objects and fictional constructs give their lives to the institutions that house them. It is around their narratives that we shape ‘tomorrow’.

October 2013, Victoria & Albert Museum. Two women are sitting on a couch, debating how old a man is… but the man – and its apartment, where they are sitting – is an invention of artists Elmgreen & Dragset, the latest in a series of characters inhabiting full-scale domestic spaces set up by the artists in museums and galleries. Elmgreen & Dragset present these homes as a nexus of intimacy and social networks, as places of identity-building, both intimate and social. The imaginary status of those spaces, however, brings up questions. How can a temporary space – exaggeratedly and deliberately constructed and ironic – designed for a thinly-developed character feel “real” enough that visitors discuss its supposed owner as a real person while others phone the host institution to complain against the privatisation of the Museum? What differentiates an institutional space from a domestic one and how can these differences disappear so easily? Where – if there is even one – is the limit between the intimate “private” and the social “public”? The paper builds from Elmgreen & Dragset’s domestic inventions, analysing most importantly the physical changes made to the spaces and the architectural strategies deployed, to suggest that domestic spaces are always understood by first attempting to imagine one’s personal story and that, by extension, they are always understood as part of a collective identity, of complex and varying social networks.
