The two creatures in the title have attracted the attention of ethnographers and etymologists alike for more than a century now, resulting in several theories, more than twenty etymologies, and no consensus. The present paper evaluates these proposals and adds to them yet another one. It also presents linguistic and extra-linguistic data that strengthens some of them and weakens others. The proposal favoured by the authors is presented in more detail, and with new supporting evidence.

Abstract: Following 4 separate studies conducted over the past 3 years on Norwegian Nynorsk, young language activists and popular media discourse about language (Puchowski 2015, Puchowski 2016a, Puchowski 2016b, Puchowski 2017 in writing), this talk plans to explain why linguistics as an interdisciplinary subject should accomodate more for studies on written language (incl. orthographies and stylistics), understanding it as a dynamic part of people's linguistic behaviour. I will hope to explain how qualitative and ethnographic studies on language, linguistic variation and so-called 'folk-linguistic' discourse are useful in understanding how language users behave, and how in at least the case of Norway, written linguistic behaviour is a centre-point to linguistic behaviour more generally. This presentation complements my undergraduate MA thesis on Nynorsk activist language attitudes and written language aesthetic preferences.

Kơho, a Mon-‐Khmer (Austroasiatic) language, is spoken by approximately 200,000 people located in Lam Dong province in the highland region of Viet Nam. There are also several thousand other speakers who now live in France and the U.S. In 1986, and again in 1992, Kơho refugees were resettled primarily in North Carolina. Like so many emigrant groups preceding them, many children are not learning the language and some cultural traditions are not being preserved. Maintenance of the Kơho culture and its language has become an important issue to the relocated community.

No dia 20 de abril de 1903, o então auxiliar científico do Museu Etnológico de Berlim Theodor Koch-Grünberg deixava a Alemanha rumo ao Brasil para a realização de uma expedição etnográfica à região dos rios Ucayali e Purus. Seu objetivo era a observação da cultura dos povos indígenas do grupo pano e a obtenção de objetos etnográficos para os acervos dos museus. Depois de mais de trinta dias de viagem de Hamburgo ao Brasil, o pesquisador chegou finalmente a Manaus no dia primeiro de junho. O baixo nível das águas e notícias dos conflitos sangrentos entre comerciantes, exploradores da borracha e indígenas deixaram-no apreensivo. Ele optou, então, por postergar sua meta inicial e aventurar-se na região do alto rio Negro, onde posteriormente, tendo desistido definitivamente da viagem ao Purus, realizaria sua expedição etnográfica
