"Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between men and women but also the relation of women to themselves. The surveyor of woman in herself is male: the surveyed female. Thus she turns herself into an object - and most particularly an object of vision: a sight." (Berger, 1972: 47). Seminal theorist Laura Mulvey employed Freudian psychoanalysis to give insight into the erotic pleasure of the cinema. This essay will serve to analyse how Sharon Stone’s character May Munroe/ Adrian Hastings is framed in The Specialist (1994, USA). Further, how this framing allows the male spectator to use fetishistic scopophilia as a rehabilitating device. In order to do so, critical definitions of the male gaze, fetishistic scopophilia, identification, and spectatorship will be explored in line with scene analysis.

Tara Westover discusses a myriad range of themes and social concerns in her memoir. She does it in a stylistically simulating manner and also keep everything true and personal to herself. Thus making it possible to keep herself as individual as well as universal. The themes and social concerns are also analysed in comparison with the cultural and social aspects of Pakistan.

This paper aims at analyzing Anowa, a play written by Ama Ata Aidoo, in order to decode the author's conception of femininity which, in the majority of classical literary works produced by men, is traditionally limited to some debasing roles defined by the patriarchal system. The analysis is carried out on the basis of Systemic Functional Linguistics, a theory mainly developed by Halliday and Mathiessen (2004) and Eggins (1994). According to this theory, language is a very complex semiotic system, structured to express three Kinds of meanings simultaneously: the interpersonal, the experiential, and the textual meanings. The article focuses on the interpersonal metafunction in order to find out what characterizes the relationship between men and women, and how this is redefined and to which extent. The methodology used for the analysis is the mixed-method. It comes out from the analysis that the relationship between male and female characters is based on equal power, mutual respect, and familiarity, which is in total contradiction to the description of this relationship in many male authored literary works. Thus, in Anowa, a woman is not an object; but she is equipped verbally and intellectually to talk of herself. Narrations are not insignificant, but they contribute in constructing new identities.

The spectrum of practices termed “Female Genital Mutilation” (or FGM) by the World Health Organization is sometimes held up as a counterexample to moral relativism. Those who advance this line of thought suggest the practices are so harmful in terms of their physical and emotional consequences, as well as so problematic in terms of their sexist or oppressive implications, that they provide sufficient, rational grounds for the assertion of a universal moral claim—namely, that all forms of FGM are wrong, regardless of the cultural context. However, others point to cultural bias and moral double standards on the part of those who espouse this argument, and have begun to question the received interpretation of the relevant empirical data concerning FGM as well. In this article I assess the merits of these competing perspectives. I argue that each of them involves valid moral concerns that should be taken seriously in order to move the discussion forward. In doing so, I draw on the biomedical “enhancement” literature in order to develop a novel ethical framework for evaluating FGM (and related interventions—such as female genital “cosmetic” surgery and non-therapeutic male circumcision) that takes into account the genuine harms that are at stake in these procedures, but which does not suffer from being based on cultural or moral double standards.

Nandipha Mntambo’s wide corpus of art offers us exciting ways to think through and extend feminist themes. We dwell specifically on Mntambo’s cowhide series, which is an ongoing meditation on, and subversion of different conceptions of subjectivity, the body and identity (common themes within feminist epistemologies). Her installations (re)present a mounted artistic contestation of the un-enunciated ways of viewing the (‘African’) female subject, pointing to non-dualistic revisions of the subject’s conceptions. In this way, Mntambo gives materiality to the cultural theorist Homi Bhabha’s conceptions of the Third Space, her works usher us into ‘the beyond’ – a space for contesting archaic dualism, a site of the re-imagined, and a way of (re)theorising the
now. In this regard, it is our contention that Mntambo provides us with unexplored avenues to re-think and reconceptualise some of the central themes of (‘African’) feminism

There has been a growing debate within the broad field of postcolonial scholarship which seeks to challenge both its territorial boundaries with the advent of globalization and its limitations when applied to the realm of white-settler societies. The debate has been extremely fruitful in situating emerging scholarship that seeks to extend postcoloniality, its theoretical framing, and the internal processes of social categorization for peoples caught within the nation-state's territorial sphere. Unfortunately, disability and indigeneity remain largely absent from these fresh debates; or when included, are explored as singular fields of analytical inquiry with little intersectional dialogue. With this paper, I aim to extend these nascent debates by critically engaging with both disability and indigeneity as two interlocking sites of (post)colonial nation-state power. To explicate this argument, my analysis focuses on a key historical moment in the Australian experience – the formation of the colonial white-settler society of Australia in its early years (1901–1920s), comparing and contrasting the systems of administrative management of disability and indigeneity. In doing so, the paper reveals the deep materialities of white, able-bodied, masculine, (post)colonial settler rule that bring together disability and indigeneity via gender reproductive controls. The conclusion reflects on the transformative effects of managing transgressive bodies and minds under the white able-bodied settler state and the potential this opens to negotiate practices of solidarity.

Between 1902 and 1932, Julia Morgan and her clients literally built their way out of the Victorian notion of separate spheres to create a landscape for modern womanhood. Their houses, clubs, and various organizations not only contributed to the growth and modernization of the cities, but served as a mode of political expression and left a permanent, material, and very public record of their contributions to California during the Progressive Era. Morgan’s life serves as a gateway to and path through the historical transformation of this landscape. Because Morgan accorded to her clients an unusually high level of influence during the design process, and because her career intersected with so many individuals and groups comprised of multiple ethnicities and classes, this one person’s life provides an important window into the broader relationship between gender, social change, and the built environment. The landscapes of her childhood and the people who inhabited them inspired Morgan to embark on a long and daring journey through the masculine world of the architectural profession. Morgan’s experiences at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, directly affected her gender consciousness and awakened the budding architect to the direct relationship between the spaces of women’s lives and the breadth of opportunities women had in the world outside the home. After earning her architectural degree, Morgan spent a lifetime creating a new landscape for women that would help expand those opportunities. This period of building activity reinforced the already notable influence of women and their organizations in the California landscape, as well as their sophisticated understanding of the capitalist economy, property rights, and the accumulation of wealth. No single issue united the women’s groups; rather, the buildings stand as public and material investments in the intellectual, cultural, social, and economic growth of California and its urban centers.

This paper argues that international human rights law is inadequate in understanding the complexities of Muslim women’s headcoverings and that it has failed to protect Muslim women from prohibitive and punitive measures of the liberal State. Through a review of the relevant cases from the European Court of Human Rights as well as a review of prohibitive laws from Muslim-majority Turkey, the paper argues that international human rights law is prejudiced to say the least, and, heeding Janet Halley’s advice, needs to take a break from feminism in order to fully protect Muslim women’s dignity as defined by Muslim women themselves.

This book compares British and Spanish media covering the French ban on hijab-wearing in public schools. Using interdisciplinary approaches ranging from social psychology, semiology, cognitive linguistics, and sociology, it explains how the hijab is interpreted as a sign by the mainstream culture and hijab-wearing Muslim sub-culture.

Based on an analysis of 108 articles published in the national newspaper from each context, this comparative study operates on two levels: a micro-level analysis of within-culture variations between mainstream culture and the hijab-wearing women; and macro-level analysis of the cross-cultural variation between the British context and the Spanish one. The result is a profound insight into how each discourse reveals the different levels of social integration of hijab-wearing women in these two different contexts.

This paper concentrates on the threats that women, and Arab women in particular, might face on virtual, interactive platforms, that enable the bodiless becoming of the gender, and sex identity. As it has been noted (Pookulangara and Koelster, 2011) the ways that interactive social media platforms are being used are often correlated, and influenced by the cultural background of a given user’s cultural and societal positioning. Taking this under consideration, this literature review revisits existing bibliography of the usage of social media by women in the Arab world, paying close attention to the cultural idiosyncrasies of Saudi Arabia. Which can be the dangers of Saudi Arab women online, and how we can address these problematic in a relation to those social media platforms?

In the frame of feminist theory, this article analyses female characters in three films which are selected due to common war plot, these are The Dawns Here Are Quiet, Schindler’s List and The Pianist. The aim of this analysis is to show statutes of female characters during the war and to show reproduction of female labor around the concepts of militarism and nationalisim. The article problematizes, female’s active and passive participation to the process of etnich/national identity formation in terms of militarization conditions. In the book, Gender and National, Yuval-Davis’es three of four main thesis, emphasizes statuses of female against male domination in the war and reproduction of female labor with titles; biological reproductive, transmitter of culture, participation of war and army.
By looking at men’s being associated with soldiery and war, the answer of question how female characters in war films are represented is sought within this article. Female characters in these films chosen as the sample, during the war times put effort in trying to save humanity in themselves but also what we can see is resignedacceptance towards the male domination.

This study discusses Arab diasporic women's resistance against cultural and social oppression on several aspects of women's lives, such as education and the daily life in Laila Halaby's West of the Jordan (2003). It also discusses the role of the Arab diasporic women in the West in confirming or resisting such oppressions. The study also illustrates that although diasporic experiences in the West helped Arab women uproot/resist social and cultural oppressions, in some other cases, diasporic experiences helped reinforce the consistency of such oppressive practices. Laila Halaby in West of the Jordan provides several examples of the heterogeneity of the Arab diasporic women's identity/ psychology. For instance, Soraya, one of the four main characters, is introduced as an example of those women who gain freedom in the diaspora, while Khadija, in contrast, experiences more pressure due to her being in the diaspora.

یادداشتی است برای ویژه‌نامه‌ی زنان نشریه‌ی دانشجویی-صنفی هَلا درباب جنبش زنان و جنبش دانشجویی، پیوند این دو و امکانات بالقوه‌ای که در هر کدام برای بده‌بستان با دیگری موجود است؛ این‌که جایگاه مطالبات زنان درون جنبش دانشجویی کجاست و جنبش زنان چگونه می‌تواند به خدمت دانشجویان، خاصه دختران دانشجو دربیاید. ائتلاف و اتحاد جنبش‌ها مفاهیم کلیدی و کانونی هستند که سعی کردم در این مقاله  کمی شرح و بسطشان دهم. در پایان به سهم و ظرفیت مشارکت این دو جنبش در پیکار طبقاتی پرداختم و کوشیدم با خوانشی سلبی و روانکاوانه از مفهوم پرولتاریا به آن پویایی بیشتری ببخشم.

Although the letter to the Colossians has been used to rationalize slavery and domestic abuse, several texts—such as 1:9-29 and 2:6-15—complicate the letter’s relationship with Roman hegemonic paradigms and language. These passages aggregate Christ’s passive suffering with a powerful conquest of the cosmos and therefore raise the question of the subaltern situation of the letter’s author and audience. Does the author only assimilate Roman power systems, or does he utilize common hegemonic power structures to express a subaltern theology? In response to these questions, this paper will show that the Christ-cosmos conflict in the letter shares, but also modifies, Roman hegemonic paradigms in ecological and political spheres in which the less powerful party must submit to the greater. Examining the letter’s rhetorical modification with the post-colonial theory of “hybridity” and an eco-feminist hermeneutic, we will demonstrate how Colossians re-imagines the crucifixion as a conquest of the rebellious, disordered cosmic powers and means of salvation for the weak.

A través del lenguaje utilizado para denominar a las mujeres negras en las novelas "Deesa Rose" de  Sherley Anne Williams y "Sula" de Toni Morrison hacemos una comparativa con las obras de las artistas Kara Walker y Adrian Piper. En la lectura crítica se analiza el lenguaje de opresión y odio, así como los modelos de subversión en el propio cuerpo de las mujeres negras.
