In its spatial expansion, capital has globalised the production and distribution chain. The division of labour has been restructured throughout the world, factories have shifted from North to South, structural unemployment has increased in the North and cheap labour has been exploited to the hilt in the South. Bangladesh has thereby become the second-largest ready-made garment exporter in the world after China, supplying garments to major Western clothing brands. On 24 April 2013, the collapse of Rana Plaza that housed five garment factories killed at least 1,134 workers and injured many more. It exposed the vulnerability of the industry as well as the global lack of responsibility and accountability. This article investigates the global chain of the industry in order to understand the linkages between the lives of workers in the South and the profits of the monopolies of the North. The article also makes an attempt to understand the roles played by the local and global profiteers in the supply chain.

The author applies Geoffrey Leech’s Grand Strategy of Politeness (GSP) to the Latin poetry of Catullus, with a view to determine whether Leech’s theory is applicable across the chronological divide between Antiquity and Modernity. The language assessed is limited to “directive/impositive” speech acts and “commissives,” and the poetic volume is limited to the most salient and representative examples of (im)politeness found in Catullus’ polymetric poems (1-60). With Catullus being viewed in terms of the “implied author,” these examples are then assessed according to Leech’s five scales for measuring appropriate degrees of politeness—vertical distance, horizontal distance, weight/value, strength of socially-defined rights/obligations, and self-territory/other-territory—in order to isolate the variants of these scales, as they are found in Catullus, and the pragmalinguistic forms used to encode these variants. No one scale is found to be more determinative for politeness than another, but the importance of social class for informing politeness appears as a prominent variant in four out of the five scales. Although im-politeness manifests itself far more often than politeness, in almost all instances of im-politeness the motivation can be connected with the implied author’s aim to entertain his literary audience. The article tentatively confirms the basic suitability of Leech’s theory for assessing politeness usage in ancient literature.

This study describes Governmental Services Online (GSO) in Jordan, the importance of such online services, the objectives of implementing them, and the way in which they could be implemented. It introduces a Government-website that includes all the services provided by the Jordanian ministries and departments. The study focuses on the Civil Status and Passports Department's services, and how they could be converted into Online Services. It demonstrates the applicability of the model by implementing the Passport Services Online (PSO) System.

Structural models of the mood and anxiety disorders postulate that each disorder has a shared component that can account for comorbidity and its own unique component that distinguishes it from others. The principal aim of the current study was to determine the extent to which the 30 facets of the Five-Factor Model (FFM), as measured by the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R), contribute to the identification of the unique component in mood and anxiety disorders in treatment-seeking clinical samples. Participants (N ¼ 610) were psychiatric outpatients with principal DSM-IV diagnoses (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized social phobia (GSP), panic disorder with/without agoraphobia (PD; PD/A) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Results suggest that approximately half of the variance in differences between these diagnoses is associated with specific characteristics represented by the FFM facets. Unique personality profiles for the MDD, GSP, PTSD and, to a lesser extent, OCD groups emerged. Broad traits of the FFM, when broken into more narrow components at the facet level, contribute significantly to the identification of unique aspects associated with specific mood and anxiety disorders. The integration of lower and higher levels of structural examination of the mood and anxiety disorders is discussed.
