Giovanni Battista Foggini

En el año 2014 se restauró la escultura ecuestre " Carlos II a caballo " , realizada en 1698 por el artista florentino Giovanni Battista Foggini. La obra está realizada en bronce mediante varias piezas unidas entre sí, y la superficie se doró al mercurio o " a fuego ". La escultura presentaba un aspecto muy oscuro debido a las numerosas capas de antiguas protecciones, que al encontrarse muy oxidadas ocultaban la superficie dorada. Esta presentaba amplias zonas de pérdida del oro, posiblemente producidas por las altas temperaturas alcanzadas durante el incendio del Alcázar en 1734, que llegaron a afectar al dorado pero no a la estructura del bronce. Se planteó la necesidad de realizar una limpieza que evitara el pulimento superficial del dorado, ya que al bruñirlo se obtiene un brillo que deja el metal como nuevo, por esta razón se utilizó un sistema de geles, que permite conservar la pátina del tiempo del oro.
The sculpture " Carlos II on horseback " by Giovanni Battista Foggini in 1698, was recently restored. The work was cast in several pieces in bronze, and was finished with a mercury-gilding or " fired gilding ". The sculpture was very dark, due to the several old protective layers which was oxidised hidden the real condition of the gilded surface, that had lost large areas of gold wich was probably produced by the high temperatures reached during the fire in the Alcazar, in 1734, which affected the surface but left the bronze structure free of damage. For this reason it was necessary to use a cleaning technique which prevented the superficial polishing of the gold because it could burnish the metal given the appearance of new gold, for this reason we used gels that preserve the patina of time.

Protagonisti della vita politica del Comune e della Repubblica di Firenze fra il XIII e il XV secolo, gli Albizi detennero il padronato di molte cappelle nell’antica chiesa cittadina di San Pier Maggiore. Mediante una ricca e inedita documentazione, il volume ripercorre le diverse fasi della decorazione della cappella di Santa Lucia, dalla sua facies tre-quattrocentesca sino al suo completo trasferimento e rimontaggio nella chiesa di San Paolino, a seguito della demolizione di San Pier Maggiore decretata dal granduca Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena nel 1784. Lo studio si configura come una sorta di indagine stratigrafica che evidenzia le caratteristiche formali dei vari allestimenti in rapporto alle motivazioni dinastiche legate al prestigio del patronato, alla visibilità delle sepolture e alle successioni ereditarie fra alcune linee degli Albizi. Si avanzano quindi ipotesi ricostruttive sulla natura e sull’originaria conformazione delle emergenze artistiche che, nel corso del tempo, sono state via via modificate: come, ad esempio, il sarcofago di Maso il Cavaliere, lavorato da Lorenzo Ghiberti, e il rifacimento in chiave barocca ideato da Giovan Battista Foggini.

This article examines the career of the Florentine stonemason Francesco Cerroti (1680–1768), an important figure within the artistic culture of the Settecento in Florence and Rome, who is often mentioned in scholarly publications but has never been thoroughly studied. The point of departure is a handwritten list of works realized by Cerroti in the Biblioteca Corsiniana in Rome from ca. 1750, which allows
us to follow his professional advancement: from his training
in the Medicean Galleria dei lavori through his collaboration with Giovan Battista Foggini, Massimiliano Soldani Benzi, and Alessandro Galilei in Florence and Tuscany until his passage
to Rome at the service of Pope Clement XII Corsini, where he came in contact with artists such as Ferdinando Fuga, Luigi Vanvitelli, Giovanni Battista Maini, Agostino Cornacchini. The aim of this study is not to analyze single works, but to explore through the Nota and other published and unpublished sources more general questions regarding the social and professional situation of a stonemason in the Settecento between Florence and Rome. These include the management of his family affairs and his ties with the community of stonemason families in
his hometown Settignano, his relationship with sculptors
and architects, the degree of autonomy he had in executing monuments such as tombs and altars, as well as his social ascent thanks to his entrepreneurial capabilities. Cerroti was in fact an exceptional figure among the scalpellini of his time because with the help of sons and grandsons he established a highly profitable business consisting of two workshops in Florence and Rome plus a shop in the Eternal City where he sold precious stones and antiques.

Ercole Ferrata (Pellio di Sotto, Como, 1610 - Rome, 1686) was an important sculptor in Seventeenth-century Rome, following two protagonists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Alessandro Algardi. The eight wooden sculptures from Ferrata’s studio, deposited by his heirs in the parish church of San Michele in Pellio di Sotto and now displayed in the Museum of Scaria Intelvi since 1966, testify to the strong and lasting bond with the native valley. In his will, drawn up in 1685, the sculptor ordered the materials of his studio to be intended for the public benefit and, above all, of his homeland. To these eight small wooden sculptures, we can now add an ivory Crucifix, mentioned in pastoral visits in the Nineteenth century, then forgotten and considered missing, which is proposed here to be recognized in the one mentioned in the inventory of the sculptor’s house, particularly in his bedroom, where Ferrata died in 1686. Therefore, the Crucifix and the eight models are testimonies of an exceptional human and artistic experience; they offer the opportunity not only to reconsider the history of the dispersion of Ferrata’s studio, but also to better understand its organization, then to measure Ferrata’s long legacy in Lombard sculpture between Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries.

Faced with growing Turkish incursions into the Mediterranean during the second half of the 16th century, Cosimo I de Medici founded the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano. Conceived with a religious-military character, eminently naval, it was headquartered in Pisa (Italy).

The main objective of this article is to make known, thanks to the artistic representations of the seven Medicean/Mediceous Gran Dukes as Great Masters of the Order of Santo Stefano, the iconography gestated from the statutes and the provisions relating to clothing collected in the order.

Ante las crecientes incursiones turcas en el Mediterráneo durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, Cosimo I de Medici fundó la Orden de los caballeros de San Estéban. Concebida con carácter religioso-militar, eminentemente naval, estableció su sede en Pisa (Italia).

El objetivo principal de este artículo es dar a conocer, gracias a las representaciones  artísticas de los siete Granduques mediceos como Grandes Maestres de la Orden de Santo Stefano, la iconografía gestada a partir de los estatutos y las disposiciones relativas a la indumentaria recogidas en la orden.

Il presente contributo propone di analizzare l’eredità algardiana nella scultura di Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725), scultore di corte di Cosimo III de’ Medici dal 1687. Formatosi nell’Accademia creata dal granduca a Roma dal 1673 al 1676, cioè due decenni dopo la morte di Alessandro Algardi, Foggini non fu un ‘allievo’ diretto del maestro bolognese. Tuttavia, presso Ercole Ferrata, egli ebbe la possibilità di impregnarsi del linguaggio algardiano non solo studiando le sculture in situ ma anche i numerosi modelli e calchi presenti nella bottega di Via Giulia.
Il ritorno di Foggini in patria fu caratterizzato dall’importante commissione di tre pale marmoree per la Cappella Corsini a Santa Maria del Carmine, fortemente segnate dal rilievo di Algardi a San Pietro, in particolare quella raffigurante la Battaglia di Anghiari. Il ricordo immediato dei modelli algardiani si vede in diverse opere di Foggini, come negli studi di alari, la cui composizione è direttamente paragonabile ai famosi precedenti del maestro, oppure nel bronzetto del Battesimo di Cristo realizzato per l’Elettrice Palatina, per il quale Foggini fece diversi disegni preparatori mostrando una diretta dipendenza dall’originale di Algardi.  Diverse fusioni della Decollazione di San Paolo di Bologna attribuibili a Foggini testimoniano inoltre la conoscenza precisa che il Fiorentino aveva maturato della scultura di Alessandro Algardi.
