Luigi Vanvitelli

Realizzata a partire dal 1753, la Fagianeria di Caiazzo, nasce come sito di caccia di re Carlo III di Borbone e fu commissionata dallo stesso al Vanvitelli, il quale prese spunto dalla Fagianeria di Capodimonte, per riprodurre i metodi dell'allevamento dei fagiani e prendere l'ispirazione per le fabbriche, le strutture e gli edifici, che sarebbero sorti nella Piana di Caiazzo e che avrebbero costituito quel grande complesso produttivo cui i Borboni miravano. L'obiettivo era il recupero e la valorizzazione dei luoghi tramite l'agricoltura e l'allevamento .Lo stesso Vanvitelli nella lettera al fratello Urbano del 01/05/1753 scrive:"La

ABSTRACT:
When the increasing political weakness of the papal government on the international stage became a reality, the Roman curia – and particularly the Good Government Congregation – tried to restore the state productive-commercial policies on one hand; on the other, the government agencies promoted the image of the Pope even in the most peripheral areas of the Papal State: a complex program of which the city of Fano seems to represent an exceptional example case. In fact, in a few years, the community started the reconstruction both of its port and its municipal tower; a work – the latter one – which due to its representative value and structural difficulty was entrusted to some of the most popular architects of that time: Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-1773) and Giovan Francesco Buonamici (1692-1759).

I. Benincampi, La legazione di Romagna nel Settecento. Il «Buon Governo» dell'architettura nella periferia dello Stato Pontificio (1700-1758), tesi di dottorato dell'Università di Roma - Sapienza - Dipartimento di Storia, Disegno e Restauro dell'Architettura, a. a. 2017/2018.

ABSTRACT:
Nella prima metà del Settecento, la legazione di Romagna rappresentò uno dei laboratori artistici più attivi della ‘periferia’ dello Stato della Chiesa. Infatti, la costante perdita di prestigio da parte della figura del Pontefice in atto a partire dalle paci di Westfalia (1648) se da una parte attivò quel lento processo di indebolimento dell’egemonia culturale romana, dall’altra consentì anche alle regioni più remote della nazione di contribuire al dibattito allora in corso sull’esperienza barocca. Conseguentemente, l’obiettivo della ricerca è stato principalmente quello di ricostruire i termini di questo apporto sotto il profilo dell’architettura. Anzitutto, quindi, è parso necessario stabilire quale fosse la condizione del territorio al principio del XVIII secolo e quale fosse lo stato delle relazioni con Roma e Bologna. E questo perché, tradizionalmente, si è sempre ritenuta la provincia dipendente da questi centri. Certamente, la Congregazione del Buon Governo e i rappresentanti del regnante in loco – Legati e Governatori – esercitarono un controllo totale, rendendo sostanzialmente superflui i Consigli Generali e particolari romagnoli. Tuttavia, la favorevole successione al trono di sovrani interessati a un rilancio dello Stato riaccese lo spirito di iniziativa delle amministrazioni locali, che intesero prendere parte a questi ammodernamenti nella speranza di emanciparsi dal contesto di appartenenza e ritagliarsi una posizione di maggiore autorevolezza. Questa situazione spronò una diffusa intraprendenza che si concretizzò nella costruzione di numerosi edifici pubblici e privati, religiosi e laici. Svolgere però simili incarichi – constatata la difficoltà dei bilanci comunali – implicava la presenza di specialisti, garanti della buona riuscita dell’opera e della qualità delle realizzazioni, a fronte di circoscritte possibilità d’investimento. Per questo motivo, una parte della dissertazione è stata dedicata allo studio delle modalità di formazione nella Legazione, distinguendo l’istruzione erudita – fondata sull’osservazione diretta dei manufatti capitolini e la frequentazione degli ambienti accademici – dalla pratica costruttiva insegnata nelle botteghe dai mastri. In tal modo, si sono selezionate alcune figure chiave auliche, riconosciute in funzione tanto della storiografia quanto di una precisa geografia politica della professione: Carlo Cesare Scaletta a Faenza (1666-1748), Giuseppe Merenda (1687-1767) fra Forlì e Faenza, Pietro Carlo Borboni (1720ca-73) a Cesena e dintorni, Giovan Francesco Buonamici (1692-1758) lungo la costa adriatica e Giuseppe Antonio Soratini (1682-1762) fra Ravenna e l’entroterra. In particolare, però, solo quest’ultimi due ebbero una produzione di carattere interregionale.
Quanto invece alle maestranze – appurata la vastità, la varietà e il diverso grado di competenza di queste imprese edili – si sono considerati sia alcuni gruppi di speciale interesse, come furono i clan dei Boschi e dei Campidori a Faenza, sia specifici personaggi come Pier Mattia Angeloni (1627-1701) e Francesco Zondini (1682-1748) a Cesena, o Giuliano Cupioli (not. 1740-76) a Rimini. E questo perché se i primi testimoniarono nel passaggio da una generazione all’altra il cambio di gusti che segnò uno spiccato ritorno al classicismo, al contrario i secondi dimostrarono come – parallelamente a nuove mode – continuassero a sopravvivere modi progettuali di memoria precedente, seppure moderatamente aggiornate.
Ciò nondimeno, uno sviluppo del mestiere fu sostenuto anche dalla costante presenza nella Legazione di periti camerali come Francesco Fontana (1668-1708), Abram Paris (1641ca-1716), Girolamo Caccia (1650-1728ca), Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-73) e Ferdinando Fuga (1699-1782): operatori alle dirette dipendenze del Pontefice la cui assidua frequentazione dei centri romagnoli non solo fornì l’occasione alla regione di dotarsi di moderne elaborazioni progettuali – dai singoli manufatti a interi impianti urbani (come Cervia Nuova) – ma, allo stesso tempo, garantì un confronto attivo con i principali architetti dell’epoca, il che introdusse elementi di originalità e velocizzò la messa in pratica di quel ‘riformismo’ papale, allora tendenza dominante.
Così – dall’erezione di pescherie alla ottimizzazione dei porti, passando per la sistemazione di ponti, strade, beccarie, archivi, ospedali e la diversione dei fiumi Ronco e Montone (effettivamente in opera dal 1735) – molteplici municipalità si rinnovarono secondo un linguaggio sintetico e austero, esplicita declinazione delle sperimentazioni romane in funzione delle necessità locali. Di conseguenza, si trattò di un processo di assimilazione, adeguamento e successiva riproposizione: una dialettica immagine della stessa evoluzione del Barocco. E a questo generalizzato sviluppo contribuirono anche gli edifici di culto che, in quantità sempre maggiori, si andarono rinnovando attraverso un procedimento di riduzione «alla moderna», spesso preludio di un aggiornamento ab imis fundamentis. In tal maniera, se da una parte è vero che diverse chiese preferirono mantenere la tradizionale impostazione controriformista, accogliendo però inserti e motivi decorativi tratti dai principali trattati in circolazione – ad esempio lo Studio di architettura civile (dal 1702) – dall’altra è altresì vero che non mancarono tentativi di investigazione del nuovo codice espressivo: casi a volte tesi alla ricerca di un compromesso secondo la linea di regolarizzazione e depotenziamento già introdotta a Roma da Carlo Fontana (1638-1724) e il suo entourage, a volte rivolti direttamente a una reinterpretazione di celebri exempla capitolini.

Il testo analizza due fogli della raccolta dell’Archivio vanvitelliano di Caserta. Si tratta di alcuni disegni, non chiaramente attribuiti, già posti in relazione con una ipotetica veduta dei palazzi reali di Lisbona disegnata da Filippo Juvarra e “messa in quadro” da Gaspar van Wittel, poi scomparsa.
Dallo studio emerge sia la ricostruzione dell’architettura che Juvarra aveva progettato per la nuova chiesa e per i palazzi del re Dom João V, sia la sua localizzazione nel tessuto urbano della città.
Lo studio ha permesso inoltre delle nuove riflessioni sull’opera dell’architetto messinese e in particolare sono emersi i legami che collegano il progetto della veduta con quello di palazzo Madama, realizzato l’anno successivo a Torino.
La collocazione in un preciso ambito temporale ha infine consentito di tracciare anche un breve ritratto di un eccezionale committente e della sua corte.

L'intento di questo lavoro è di ricercare e approfondire la storia della chiesa di Montelupone e dei beni culturali presenti al suo interno, dalle decorazioni scultoree di Gioacchino Varlè alla copia dell'Annunciazione di Federico Barocci, fino ad arrivare alle porte lignee realizzate da Cristoforo Casari nel 1796.

This monography analyzes the changes of the Berio palace, an important palace built in via Toledo, from the origin untill its lastest transformation. Its main point of attention is the work done in the XVIII century, when the palace, previously owned by Duke Domenico Perrelli, was sold to Duke d’Arcos. The latter arranged luxurious celebrations for the infanta (daughter of Ferdinando VI and Maria Carolina) in this palace. Luigi Vanvitelli organised this spectacular celebration. The palace was later bought by Giovan Domanico Berio, who modernised it. The vault of gallery was pictured by Giacinto Diana; it was discovered during this research

The Vanvitelli were not only a family of artists, but a dynasty that with Gaspar, Luigi and Carlo, through almost two centuries, leaved a perennial trace in the field of the arts, whose most glorious achievement was the creation of the Royal Palace of Caserta. A legacy that is here investigated from a new and unusual point of view: by means of the graphic production of the training’s years of the young architect Luigi Vanvitelli in relation to the paternal teachings. Through the study of the drawings of Gaspar and Luigi, belonging to the collections of the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Caserta Palace, the Museum of San Martino in Naples, the Central Institute of Graphics in Rome, the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, is here investigated the period of apprenticeship that Luigi had at the father’s house, his acquiring of graphic techniques in architectural definition and landscape, his growing mastery in the scenographic sketching, also thanks to the fruitful bond with Filippo Juvarra, likely due to the privileged relationship that the Sicilian architect entertained with the Dutch painter. In the foreground the differences between the two: the rocaille ductus, nervous and lively of Luigi; firm, precise and poetic of Gaspar, in the delineation of the same subjects, as in both Veduta di Urbino. With precise comparisons with the pictorial work, the different ways of understanding architecture are closely analyzed, having been often confused by the critic lead to erroneous attributions. It is instead the publication of the Album di Disegni, begun by Gaspar and filled with sketches by the very young Luigi, which demonstrates the action of his father as a spur and patronage of his talent, in the elitist Roman aristocratic world. It is analyzed in the graphic work of both the conception of an exuberant and magnificent nature, which leads Luigi to conceive and build the Royal Palace of Caserta, following an inspiration and a landscape model directly derived from the paternal teachings.

It is widely known that Luigi Vanvitelli was one of the greatest architects
of eighteenth-century Europe and designer of the Royal Palace of Caserta, commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon in 1751. This essay aims to highlight the matrix of his enlightened creative and professional
activity as an architect and as an engineer, whose main expressions were Nature and Landscaping. His was an art characterized by a superb taste in classicism deriving from his presence at the Academy of Arcadia, from his passion for music and theater and from his entrepreneurial and managerial skills; life experiences that allowed him
to work for about twenty years on the monumental Royal Palace which, to this very day, uniquely defines the territory of the province of Caserta. Vanvitelli undoubtedly was a brilliant architect whose namesake is now one of Southern Italy’s main state Universities

Exposición celebrada en el Palacio de los Virreyes de Barcelona entre el 29 de junio y el 17 de octubre de 2017 en conmemoración del 300 aniversario del nacimiento de Carlos III (1716-1788), Duque de Parma, Rey de las Dos Sicilias y Rey de España y las Indias.

Gli studi finora intrapresi sulle statue antiche presenti nella Reggia di Caserta hanno contribuito a dare una interessante lettura del programma decorativo del complesso vanvitelliano e delle influenze classiche nelle soluzioni artistiche adottate per il palazzo. Eppure ad oggi manca una ricerca sistematica sull'argomento. Il presente contributo non ha la pretesa di rimediare, piuttosto intende approfondire la pratica di reimpiego dei marmi e la rievocazione dell'antico nel più importante cantiere del regno di Napoli, poi delle Due Sicilie, partendo dal progetto ideato da Luigi Vanvitelli per la facciata principale della nuova residenza borbonica e focalizzando l'attenzione sui marmi e sulle sculture antiche immesse nella Real Fabbrica. Luigi Vanvitelli, per la sua formazione e per i suoi studi, aveva potuto apprezzare la grandezza degli antichi. Egli, sin dalla giovanissima età, si era direttamente confrontato con lo splendore degli edifici romani rivestiti di marmo e riccamente decorati. Così, quando fu chiamato da Carlo di Borbone a progettare la sua nuova residenza di Caserta, seguendo la moda del tempo, non si discostò da questa tendenza, piuttosto arricchì il palazzo di un apparato scultoreo davvero importante, mai realizzato ma desumibile dal repertorio di disegni pubblicati per volere della corona nel 1756 .

This essay, for the first time in the history of the studies, aims to reconstruct the artistic and literary environment of the maternal family
of Luigi Vanvitelli, emphasizing the importance of the maternal grandfather for the initial formation of the architect, the medalist,
collector and man of letters Giovan Andrea Lorenzani, a prominent figure in the Roman cultural environment of the second half of the
XVII century. He favored his young nephew Luigi Vanvitelli and left his library and collection to his daughter Anna. Luigi Vanvitelli
grew up in a family circumstances full of incentives not only to figurative arts, but also to literature and especially to music. Vanvitelli’s
entry into the Roman Accademia dell’Arcadia is another important component for understanding the classicist orientation of his architecture.

Si tratta di un guida turistica interamente dedicata alla città di Caserta, ai suoi monumenti principali, al centro storico ed ai suoi borghi e casali. I monumenti e i vari siti sono descritti secondo l'impostazione dell'itinerario e del percorso di visita, con la descrizione sistematica delle varie parti del monumento e degli ambienti degli edifici.

No other historical building in the world has been used in the movies without being respected in its historical and artistic features more than the Royal Palace of Caserta. If Versailles is usually chosen as location for representing itself, as well as to set the events that have happened through the time, at Caserta the splendid halls and the luxuriant gardens are generally utilized to come out as some other places: for instance, in La Maja desnuda (Henry Koster, 1958) it appears as the Palacio Real of Madrid, and in Waterloo (Sergej Bondarčuk, 1970) it is shown as the Fontainebleau Castle. When it is used as the location of Bourbon family, who have inhabited there, very rarely its times and artistic styles are respected. The Reggia acts as a generic seat of power. But also, the sumptuousness of the Vanvitelli architecture has allowed to the American film productions to use this building as a Vatican place and even as a space age location for the recent Star Wars episodes.

This article examines the career of the Florentine stonemason Francesco Cerroti (1680–1768), an important figure within the artistic culture of the Settecento in Florence and Rome, who is often mentioned in scholarly publications but has never been thoroughly studied. The point of departure is a handwritten list of works realized by Cerroti in the Biblioteca Corsiniana in Rome from ca. 1750, which allows
us to follow his professional advancement: from his training
in the Medicean Galleria dei lavori through his collaboration with Giovan Battista Foggini, Massimiliano Soldani Benzi, and Alessandro Galilei in Florence and Tuscany until his passage
to Rome at the service of Pope Clement XII Corsini, where he came in contact with artists such as Ferdinando Fuga, Luigi Vanvitelli, Giovanni Battista Maini, Agostino Cornacchini. The aim of this study is not to analyze single works, but to explore through the Nota and other published and unpublished sources more general questions regarding the social and professional situation of a stonemason in the Settecento between Florence and Rome. These include the management of his family affairs and his ties with the community of stonemason families in
his hometown Settignano, his relationship with sculptors
and architects, the degree of autonomy he had in executing monuments such as tombs and altars, as well as his social ascent thanks to his entrepreneurial capabilities. Cerroti was in fact an exceptional figure among the scalpellini of his time because with the help of sons and grandsons he established a highly profitable business consisting of two workshops in Florence and Rome plus a shop in the Eternal City where he sold precious stones and antiques.

The construction of the Royal Palace of Caserta, whose first stone was laid on January 20, 1752, represented one of the
most significant and identifying achievements of the Kingdom of Naples. Charles III of Bourbon commissioned Luigi
Vanvitelli to build a palace capable of challenging for prestige and grandeur the Royal Palace of the Granja de San Ildefonso, wanted by Philip V of Spain and the Palace of Versailles wanted by Louis XIV of France. In the projects illustrated
by Vanvitelli in the Dichiarazione dei disegni del Reale Palazzo di Caserta, the ancient with its meanings pervades
every single aspect of the building and its park: from the choice of construction materials and architectural decorations
to sculptural furnishings. One of the first interventions planned by the architect to magnify the King’s residence was the
commission to Tommaso Solari and Andrea Violani of copies of the most representative works handed down to us from
the past, preserved in the main royal residences and collections of antiquities in Europe. Integrating the ancient into modern architecture became the main challenge of the building site in Caserta, in contrast to the efforts made by the royal
house in bringing the Vesuvian centers to light. The unsustainable expenses, the departure of Charles to Madrid, the
change in the perception of the ancient led to transformations and interruptions in the realization of Vanvitell’s project.
The niches and bases intended to host the Farnese originals and the marble copies of the ancient sculptures still remain
empty today; the statues of Violani and Solari were used to decorate, in a completely different political climate, single
portions of the park of Caserta, the Villa Comunale of Naples and other Bourbon places. The lower vestibule of the Royal
Palace, decorated with the Latin Hercules and various other statues, only partially gives an image of what the design idea
of the sculptural furnishings of the building must have been. The contribution aims to illustrate the phases, the sense and
the significance of the use of antiquity within the royal palace of Caserta and at the same time reconstruct the coherence
and scope of the copyist production of the Bourbon period.

The times of Luigi Vanvitelli and his pupil Antonio Rinaldi's presence in Milan have long been known: between April and June of 1745 they were guests of Giovanni Giorgio Pio Pallavicino Trivulzio, delegate of the Fabbrica del Duomo. The floor plan of the Annunciata in Como (now known as 'Sanctuary of the Crucifix'), designed by Vanvitelli and sent from Rome, is also in our knowledge. Such information is now enriched by the discovery of an unpublished longitudinal section in the Canonica fund at Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio; the drawing clarifies several details of the project for Como, such as the roofing system and the chosen solution for the display of the Crucifix which, though spatially and visually connected with the high altar, was supposed to be separated from it and set against the choir wall. The outcome of the affair in Como was the same as that of the Milan projects, and yet the influence of Vanvitelli's ideas is still visible in some later propositions, such as Carlo Giuseppe Merlo's mind-boggling project and the one by Antonio Nolfi, which was eventually approved in 1761.
