History of Ancona

The reemergence of a portrait of Monsignor Angelo Locatelli Martorelli Orsini, signed by the eighteenth century painter from Ancona Bernardino Bini allows for a reevaluation of the artist’s career. Previously known almost exclusively from the accounts of nineteenth century historians of the Marche city, primarily Amico Ricci, he was said to have studied under Francesco Trevisani, as well as in other instances, Domenico Simonetti called Bagatta. Ricci also offers as example of his work, two oft-cited pictures of what presumably were historical subjects once in the communal palace of Ancona, though these remain untraced, and a Saint Teresa from the Church of the Scalzi, which was wrongly attributed. Three unpublished altarpieces by Bini are introduced here, a Passing of Saint Joseph from the Church of Saint Nicholas in Sirolo, an Immaculate Conception and Saints from the Church of Saint Biagio in Osimo, and a Translation of the Holy House of Loreto with the Madonna of the Rosary and Saints, from the parish church of Gallignano. The social position of the figure of the sitter Monsignor Angelo Locatelli Martorelli Orsini. The scion of two noble families from the provinces of the Papal State, the father was the Count Giuseppe Locatelli of Cesena, to which the prelate and his brother added the name of their mother, last exponent of the Martorelli family of Spoleto (the name Orsini was added by the Martorelli in memory of their service to that family) so that they could inherit the Martorelli properties, including the celebrated Villa Martorelli now better known as Villa Redenta. The monsignor, as is made evident by the inscription on the letter he is holding, was at the time of the portrait legate to Fermo, which must date the work to between 1735 and 1741. Finally two more published examples are also presented, both from the Pinacoteca Classense of Ravenna. Finally, the consideration is here offered that, though the production of religious paintings of the artist seems to be conceived in a conservative idiom, the portraiture style expresses one of the most interesting recurring traits of Marche eighteenth century painting, a humor and incisiveness that come from a carefully observed subject, that is sometimes at the limit of caricature.

Il complesso edilizio di età romana rinvenuto ad Ancona tra via Fanti e via Orsini viene qui ricostruito per la prima volta sulla base della revisione di tutta la documentazione disponibile, che ha reso possibile una descrizione dettagliata delle strutture e il riconoscimento di fasi mai menzionate prima. L’inquadramento cronologico dipende dallo stile di affreschi e pavimenti, in attesa di un futuro studio degli oggetti recuperati durante le indagini. L’area era inserita in un ricco quartiere residenziale, non lontano dai principali edifici pubblici e affacciato sul mare, che presenta un alto potenziale per nuovi studi e di cui viene tracciato un quadro sintetico.

This paper examines three ceramic vessels decorated in the “West Slope” style from two burials in the necropolis of Ankon (Ancona), datable to the first half of the 2nd century B.C. The morphological and stylistic analyses suggest they were made in pottery workshops situated in the central regions of mainland Greece, which at present remain unknown. The exceptional presence of these vessels in the necropolis of Ankon offers a starting point for an excursus on the distribution of “West Slope” style pottery outside Greece along both coasts of the Ionian-Adriatic basin; it is the chance to add two unpublished containers from Syracuse to the rare examples that were already known. Only three forms (thorn kantharos, plate and conical cup) are attested by some examples, which suggests they were distributed through trade. For the single examples of different forms and specific function, it may imply that they were carried as personal items. In the case of Ankon the connection with the mundus muliebris is highlighted; in particular, the unusual tomb group from which the amphora and the pyxis come suggests that it belonged to a woman of Greek origin, who had taken her preferred wedding gifts with her to her new homeland.

The paper examines the reception of a medieval myth of the foundation of Ancona by the Greek people of the Dolopes. This stemmed from an entry in Papias’ Elementarium, and it was later independently taken up by both Francesco Filelfo in a poem in praise of Felice Ferretti (1433) and Giacomo Filippo Foresti in his Supplementum chronicarum (1483). In search of the channels through which the Dolopian tradition was passed on, it is suggested that Filelfo consulted the ms. Laur. Plut. 27 sin. 3 of the S. Croce library in Florence, while Foresti certainly owned Papias’ editio princeps. In addition, an explanatory conjecture on the attribution of the information in the Supplementum to an unknown «Carinus historicus» instead of Papias is also put forward. If the entry on Ancona in Ambrogio from Calepio’s  dictionary did not make the existence of such a source credible, Carinus is quoted with reference to other cities in Benzo from Alessandria’s Chronicon, which was used by Foresti.

"Morpurgi, potomci mariborskih Judov / The Morpurgos, the descendants of the Maribor Jews" (Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage - Synagogue Maribor, 29 June – 31 August 2017) was prepared as part of the project “Tracing the paths of Maribor Jews“, supported by the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe and Mestna občina Maribor.

The paper reconstructs an event dating back to 1392, when the commune of Florence sent a letter from Coluccio Salutati’s chancellery to the city of Ancona asking for four notaries to be assigned to the office of notarii forenses malleficiorum. The process of their selection and the fulfilment of their six-month work in the criminal courts of the foreign rettori of Florence are retraced up until their return to their native city. This episode assumes further significance when taking into consideration, on the one hand, the role of Florence in the troubled situation of the Marca Anconitana in the last decade of the fourteenth century; on the other, the intermediation of the Ferretti family in Ancona, which favoured the choice of at least one notary connected to it. In the conclusion, the question is posed if the circulation of professional people between Ancona itself and the main communes might have influenced the creation of a cultural milieu, enabling it to receive and to assimilate the innovative political communication developed by Salutati.

L’indagine ricostruisce un episodio risalente al 1392 quando, con una lettera della cancelleria di Coluccio Salutati, il comune di Firenze richiede a quello di Ancona quattro notai per l’ufficio di notarii forenses malleficiorum. Di questi ultimi si ripercorre il processo di selezione e l’espletamento dell’incarico semestrale presso le curie criminali dei rettori forestieri di Firenze, sino al loro ritorno in patria. La vicenda assume un significato ulteriore prendendo in considerazione, da un lato, il ruolo di Firenze nella turbolenta situazione della Marca nel decennio finale del XIV secolo; dall’altro, l’intermediazione della famiglia anconetana dei Ferretti, che favorisce la scelta di almeno un notaio ad essa legato. Viene in conclusione avanzato un interrogativo circa l’influenza che la circolazione di personale professionale tra la stessa Ancona e i centri principali del mondo comunale potrebbe aver avuto sulla creazione nella città adriatica di un clima culturale atto a recepire ed assimilare l’innovativa comunicazione politica inaugurata da Salutati.

In the last few decades, the history of Eastern Christians in the early modern age has become the object of renewed interest. Their ambiguous position between different worlds and cultures has made them excellent subjects for investigation by researchers interested in intercultural contact and exchange. The study of their presence and circulation in Western Europe has so far consisted mainly of two distinct approaches: one privileging the community dimension, and concentrating on the settlement of merchants and sailors of a given nation in a specific city; the other one focusing on the biographical paths of individuals best known for their ecclesiastical or cultural career, such as scholars in the service of Roman congregations or Italian princely courts. In both cases the focus has been on mobility driven either by economic or diplomatic reasons, and the actors were either merchants engaged in cross-cultural trade, or high-ranking individuals and men of culture who engaged directly with popes and sovereigns. In my paper, I will combine these two approaches together, by describing the modalities of settlement of the Armenians in two cities that reflect these two types of mobility, respectively Ancona and Rome. The commercial attractiveness of the former is well represented by the figure of the wealthy Armenian merchant Giorgio Morato, who wanted to manifest his Catholic faith and attachment to his origins by sponsoring a pictorial program in the churches of the city (1559-1570). The diplomatic and cultural centrality of Rome is instead embodied by the figure of Sultanšah T‘oxat‘ec‘i, better known as Marcantonio Abagaro, son of the ambassador of the head of the Armenian Church to the pope, who later also became interpreter, translator and printer on behalf of the Roman Curia (1564-1593). The two poles presented so far came into contact thanks to the representative of a third, main vector of circulation, involving primarily a religious dimension: Giulio Antonio Santoro, cardinal of Santa Severina, used in fact Morato’s money and Marcantonio Abagaro’s work to erect a church and hospice for the Armenians in Ancona (1580), on the model of the one established a few years before in Rome, which fell under his patronage, too. His motivation was certainly not to enrich the cities of the papal state with foreign capital, but rather to attract a conspicuous number of Eastern pilgrims and ecclesiastics, make them profess the Catholic faith, and then send them back home to bear witness to their new creed. By comparing the common features and different developments of the Armenian hospices in Rome and Ancona, this paper intends to sparkle a reflection on the peculiar features of early modern Catholic ‘confessional mobility’, and its relationship with the other channels of mobility in the early modern Mediterranean.

Il repertorio raccoglie la bibliografia inerente ai testi volgari marchigiani dalle Origini alla metà del XVI secolo. L’opera è suddivisa per secoli e a ogni testo catalogato corrisponde una scheda in progressione cronologica. Sul modello della fortunata bibliografia della Letteratura volgare di Roma e del Lazio di D’Achille e Giovanardi, a ogni scheda sono associati il titolo, la datazione, una sintetica descrizione, la localizzazione linguistica, le fonti manoscritte o a stampa e infine l’elenco delle edizioni e degli studi riguardanti ogni testo. Scopo del lavoro è, da un lato, fornire un quadro analitico della documentazione linguistica delle Marche medievali attraverso uno strumento bibliografico agile, organico e aggiornato; dall’altro, segnalare i rischi connessi a un utilizzo incauto di quella cospicua parte di essi che è suscettibile di diffrazione dialettale.

Il 1920 è un anno di svolta nella storia del primo dopoguerra italiano. Scandito dalle agitazioni nelle campagne, dall'occupazione delle fabbriche, dalle elezioni amministrative e dall'avvio dell'offensiva fascista, costituisce la conclusione di un ciclo di rivolte e proteste che era iniziato nel 1917. Le ribellioni, le barricate e gli assalti ai carabinieri e alle guardie regie della primavera-estate del 1920 rappresentano un punto di osservazione privilegiato per comprendere le forme più radicali della violenza squadrista che precedono l'ascesa squadrista. Qual è la genealogia della violenza popolare? Che cos'è il "massimalismo"? La categoria di "brutalizzazione della politica" è utile alla comprensione del primo dopoguerra? Per rispondere a questi interrogativi, il libro si sofferma in particolare sui tumulti di Viareggio - scaturiti dall'uccisione, per mano di un carabiniere, di un guardalinee durante il tafferuglio nato al termine di una partita di calcio -, sulla rivolta di Ancona e più in generale sul movimento popolare contro la spedizione militare in Albania. Ricostruendo le pratiche politiche, le ideologie, le relazioni sociali e i linguaggi di queste sommosse e rivolte, Italia ribelle fornisce una contributo inedito allo studio della violenza popolare proponendo uno scavo analitico delle culture repressive che hanno caratterizzato gli apparati dello Stato liberale.

Si tratta della prima edizione completa delle lettere manoscritte, conservate nella Biblioteca Riccardiana di Firenze (Ricc. 2438bis III), che l'accademico e fonetista fiorentino Giorgio Bartoli scrisse fra il 1568 e 1583 all'amico Lorenzo Giacomini (1552, Ancona - 1598, Firenze). L'epistolario ha un primo ed evidente interesse nel documentare l'impiego di una grafia parzialmente ortofonica da parte di uno di più innovativi studiosi cinquecenteschi della fonetica, l'autore del trattato «Degli elementi del parlar toscano» (1584) e continuatore del pensiero linguistico di Benedetto Varchi. Oltre agli aspetti storico-linguistici che propone all'attenzione, la raccolta epistolare consente di mettere in luce la formazione e la personalità di Giorgio Bartoli e i termini del suo sodalizio con un altro letterato ben rappresentativo dell'ambiente accademico fiorentino del secondo Cinquecento, quale fu Lorenzo Giacomini. In «Appendice» si pubblicano altri testi autografi, in gran parte inediti, di Giorgio Bartoli, fra cui la sua lettera «sul tradurre» a Marino Bobali del 1576ca. E oltre all'«Introduzione», che illustra l'ambiente letterario dell'epoca, il volume contiene altri capitoli: gli «Appunti linguistici» che mettono a fuoco l'uso del volgare fiorentino («argenteo»), e i «Personaggi dell'epistolario», contenenti notizie sugli uomini di lettere, sui mercanti e sui politici che si affacciano nelle carte dell'epistolario.

Abstract
Il complesso di San Francesco ad Alto  a Capodimonte, coi suoi quasi otto secoli di vita, si configura come una delle più antiche fondazioni ecclesiali di Ancona che una tradizione consolidata assegna alla personale volontà del santo di Assisi.
Il tempo e la storia non sono stati clementi con questo prestigioso monumento anconitano, giunto a noi martoriato da pesanti devastazioni operate soprattutto durante l’occupazione napoleonica e maggiormente dopo l’Unità con le soppressioni degli ordini religiosi e le conseguenti trasformazioni d’uso ad ospedale militare, caserma, eccetera. La chiesa, resa oggetto di vasto culto per opera concreta del Beato Gabriele Ferretti cui l’edificio rimase sempre idealmente legato, fu arricchito nel tempo di prestigiose opere d’arte, basti ricordare i dipinti del Tiziano o del Crivelli o le opere scultoree dei maestri dalmati del Quattrocento adriatico, in parte oggi recuperate alle collezioni comunali.
La storia più recente ha visto il complesso, e la chiesa in particolare, perdere la sua configurazione originaria, dispersa nelle ovvie esigenze delle funzioni militari; ma forse nel prossimo futuro una sua auspicata dismissione del Ministero della Difesa potrebbe aprire le speranze per un suo accurato recupero all’immagine originaria, per quanto possibile, ed un suo competente restauro architettonico operato su basi scientifiche che ne renda quanto meno percepibile la memoria tipologica del complesso e soprattutto della chiesa, oggi martoriata da solai intermedi e dall’uso ad archivio.
Da qui l’esigenza di un tentativo di studio per quanto possibile ricostruttivo delle fasi storiche evolutive del complesso minorita francescano, di un rilievo metrico aggiornato, di una analisi di quanto possibile recuperare col restauro architettonico.

Abstract
The complex of St. Francesco ad Alto up the Capodimonte hill in Ancona, with its almost eight centuries of life, is one of the oldest ecclesial foundations in Ancona, which a consolidated tradition assigns to the personal will of the saint of Assisi.
Time and history have not been clement with this prestigious monument, which has been martyred by heavy devastations, especially during Napoleonic occupation and most after the Italian Unity, with the suppression of religious orders and the consequent transformations of use to hospital military, barracks, and so on. The church, which was the subject of extensive worship for the work of Blessed Gabriele Ferretti in fifteenth century, to whose building was always ideally linked, was enriched in the time of prestigious works of art, just remember the paintings of Titian or Carlo Crivelli or the sculptural works of the Dalmatian masters of the fifteenth century, partly recovered today in the municipal collections.
The latest story has seen the complex, and the church in particular, losing its original configuration, dispersed in the obvious needs of military functions; but perhaps in the near future, its desirable dismantling of the Ministry of Defense could open up hopes for its accurate recovery to the original image as much as possible, and its competent architectural restoration operated on a scientific basis that makes it less perceptible to typological memory of the complex and above all of the church, now battered by intermediaries and by archival use.

The paper explores the subject of represented identity in the Chroniche de la città de Anchona, written by Gian Mario Filelfo during his stay in Ancona as a public teacher. After a survey of the political and cultural situation on the eve of Filelfo’s arrival, medieval and humanist traditions on the origin of the city, grounded on scant mentions of the classical authors, are examined. The narration of the Chroniche is then summarized in order to elucidate how Gian Mario created an overgrown mythical-historical construction focussing on numerous Greek contributions to the development of the civic society of Ancona. Inspired by Ciraco Pizzicolli, Filelfo expects to make his narration credible by referring back to fictitious sources, such as a certain Xenophon or Herodotus of Cyrene. Finally, it is hypothesized that, alongside ancient and humanistic models, the basic role attributed to Greek and Eastern people in the Chroniche is plausibly based on flows of immigrants from the Balkans or from Greece who landed on the coasts of the Marche region in the fifteenth century.

Il contributo esamina il tema della rappresentazione identitaria nelle Chroniche de la città de Anchona, composte da Gian Mario Filelfo durante la sua permanenza ad Ancona in veste di pubblico maestro. Dopo una ricognizione della situazione politico-culturale alla vigilia dell’arrivo filelfiano, vengono passate in rassegna le tradizioni medievali ed umanistiche sulle origini greche della città, fondate sui magri cenni degli autori classici. La narrazione delle Chroniche è quindi ripercorsa per illustrare come Gian Mario costruisca un’ipertrofica architettura mitistorica che pone al centro i numerosi apporti greci alla formazione della realtà civica anconetana. Ispirandosi a Ciriaco Pizzicolli, Filelfo pretende di accreditare il racconto con il rinvio a fonti fittizie, quali un Senofonte o Erodoto di Cirene. Si propone in conclusione che, accanto ai modelli antichi e umanistici, il ruolo fondamentale attribuito agli elementi greco-orientali nelle Chroniche sia piuttosto debitore ai flussi di immigrati dai Balcani o dalla Grecia che nel Quattrocento approdano sulle coste marchigiane.
