The reemergence of a portrait of Monsignor Angelo Locatelli Martorelli Orsini, signed by the eighteenth century painter from Ancona Bernardino Bini allows for a reevaluation of the artist’s career. Previously known almost exclusively from the accounts of nineteenth century historians of the Marche city, primarily Amico Ricci, he was said to have studied under Francesco Trevisani, as well as in other instances, Domenico Simonetti called Bagatta. Ricci also offers as example of his work, two oft-cited pictures of what presumably were historical subjects once in the communal palace of Ancona, though these remain untraced, and a Saint Teresa from the Church of the Scalzi, which was wrongly attributed. Three unpublished altarpieces by Bini are introduced here, a Passing of Saint Joseph from the Church of Saint Nicholas in Sirolo, an Immaculate Conception and Saints from the Church of Saint Biagio in Osimo, and a Translation of the Holy House of Loreto with the Madonna of the Rosary and Saints, from the parish church of Gallignano. The social position of the figure of the sitter Monsignor Angelo Locatelli Martorelli Orsini. The scion of two noble families from the provinces of the Papal State, the father was the Count Giuseppe Locatelli of Cesena, to which the prelate and his brother added the name of their mother, last exponent of the Martorelli family of Spoleto (the name Orsini was added by the Martorelli in memory of their service to that family) so that they could inherit the Martorelli properties, including the celebrated Villa Martorelli now better known as Villa Redenta. The monsignor, as is made evident by the inscription on the letter he is holding, was at the time of the portrait legate to Fermo, which must date the work to between 1735 and 1741. Finally two more published examples are also presented, both from the Pinacoteca Classense of Ravenna. Finally, the consideration is here offered that, though the production of religious paintings of the artist seems to be conceived in a conservative idiom, the portraiture style expresses one of the most interesting recurring traits of Marche eighteenth century painting, a humor and incisiveness that come from a carefully observed subject, that is sometimes at the limit of caricature.

Come capitolo integrativo di una preliminare indagine già da tempo iniziata sul fenomeno dell’architettura dell’Eclettismo nelle Marche si è qui tentato di colmare un vuoto storiografico epocale, per completare il perseguito progetto culturale di dissodare e rivalutare il contributo di questa regione e dei suoi architetti alla formazione disciplinare dell’architettura italiana alle soglie del Movimento Moderno. Con una indagine sistematica sugli architetti del primo e secondo Eclettismo si è provato a gettare luce su una metodologia progettuale frutto di una specifico atteggiamento culturale che, al di là della sequenza cronologica degli stili con la quale tradizionalmente s’intende fare storia dell’architettura, investe di fatto trasversalmente quasi ottant'anni di storia, dall'Unità alla seconda guerra mondiale. Fra questi spicca la figura brillante ed articolata dell’anconetano Guido Cirilli che riveste un ruolo particolarmente interessante nel filone eclettico sia come restauratore sia come progettista, sia come docente universitario. Fu allievo prediletto di Giuseppe Sacconi, architetto della Casa Reale dei Savoia ed architetto della Santa Casa di Loreto, Direttore dell'Ufficio delle Belle Arti nella Venezia Giulia, quindi Presidente dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia poi fondatore e direttore dell'Istituto di Architettura a Venezia.

L'intento di questo lavoro è di ricercare e approfondire la storia della chiesa di Montelupone e dei beni culturali presenti al suo interno, dalle decorazioni scultoree di Gioacchino Varlè alla copia dell'Annunciazione di Federico Barocci, fino ad arrivare alle porte lignee realizzate da Cristoforo Casari nel 1796.

Il complesso edilizio di età romana rinvenuto ad Ancona tra via Fanti e via Orsini viene qui ricostruito per la prima volta sulla base della revisione di tutta la documentazione disponibile, che ha reso possibile una descrizione dettagliata delle strutture e il riconoscimento di fasi mai menzionate prima. L’inquadramento cronologico dipende dallo stile di affreschi e pavimenti, in attesa di un futuro studio degli oggetti recuperati durante le indagini. L’area era inserita in un ricco quartiere residenziale, non lontano dai principali edifici pubblici e affacciato sul mare, che presenta un alto potenziale per nuovi studi e di cui viene tracciato un quadro sintetico.

This article examined how locality influenced the development of the social networks
established and cultivated by an extended family of merchants from the island of Chios in the Italian city of Ancona, and the causes behind the evolution of its relationship with the local Genoese and Greek communities during the peak of their presence in the city between 1530 and 1550.

Chios was ruled by a Genoese association of merchants and ship owners, the Maona,
and throughout the period of Latin occupation of the island the local Greek upper classes and the Genoese rulers initiated a process of constant mingling. This led to the partial integration of some of the most important Greek families in the Genoese nobility, and to the establishment of a resilient network of contacts both home and abroad.

Chios was also characterised by a strong system of extended family ties, which were created in the island and formed the backbone of their social experience as migrants. This produced a unique form of relay migration, and dictated the way they interacted with both the Genoese merchant colony in the city, and with the formal or semi-formal institutions of the local Greek community.

Attraverso un attento riesame della scena LXXIX Cichorius della Colonna Traiana, magnifico memoriale illustrato delle campagne condotte dall’imperatore Traiano tra il 101 e il 107 d.C. per la conquista della Dacia, si propone una nuova interpretazione del sito rappresentato nella scena suddetta, comunemente ritenuta una delle prime illustrazioni figurate del porto di Ancona, da dove la flotta imperiale sarebbe partita per recarsi in Dacia. Con il presente contributo si ipotizza una diversa lettura della scena raffigurata, scaturita da alcune evidenti incongruenze cronologiche, e si propone una nuova ipotesi ricostruttiva degli eventi che caratterizzarono le imprese di Traiano negli anni delle guerre daciche, lasciando spazio ad un’interpretazione che privilegia piuttosto il porto di Brindisi a quello di Ancona.

A careful reconsideration of the plate LXXIX Cichorius of Trajan’s Column – outstanding decorated memorial of Emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars between 101 and 107 AD – leads to a novel interpretation of the setting of the scene represented on it as well as to a different reconstruction of the events of those years: some apparent chronological inconsistencies suggest that the port depicted is that of Brindisi rather than that of Ancona.

Gli studi sulle «minoranze indesiderate» nello Stato Pontificio hanno dimostrato come il «fare confraternita» sia stato un’efficace strategia di integrazione che gli “stranieri” di religione cattolica hanno utilizzato per essere accettati e inseriti nel tessuto sociale del nuovo contesto cittadino. La committenza di queste associazioni si manifesta in genere nella promozione del culto e dell’iconografia di specifici santi, talvolta importati dalla madrepatria o altre volte riutilizzati con nuove funzioni.
Il caso della committenza della confraternita di San Biagio di Ancona, fondata nel XV secolo da Schiavoni, mostra come, nella lunga durata, il massiccio fenomeno dell’assimilazione, che si verifica soprattutto a partire dal XVI secolo, abbia provocato un radicale cambiamento nei caratteri e nelle funzioni della confraternita, la quale tuttavia continua ancora nel Settecento a ricordare orgogliosamente, nella committenza e nella produzione documentaria, le proprie origini schiavone.

The paper examines the reception of a medieval myth of the foundation of Ancona by the Greek people of the Dolopes. This stemmed from an entry in Papias’ Elementarium, and it was later independently taken up by both Francesco Filelfo in a poem in praise of Felice Ferretti (1433) and Giacomo Filippo Foresti in his Supplementum chronicarum (1483). In search of the channels through which the Dolopian tradition was passed on, it is suggested that Filelfo consulted the ms. Laur. Plut. 27 sin. 3 of the S. Croce library in Florence, while Foresti certainly owned Papias’ editio princeps. In addition, an explanatory conjecture on the attribution of the information in the Supplementum to an unknown «Carinus historicus» instead of Papias is also put forward. If the entry on Ancona in Ambrogio from Calepio’s  dictionary did not make the existence of such a source credible, Carinus is quoted with reference to other cities in Benzo from Alessandria’s Chronicon, which was used by Foresti.

Il contributo ripercorre alcune tappe della carriera del pittore bolognese Prospero Fontana, mettendone a fuoco le competenze di scenografo e di stuccatore e proponendo un riesame storico e documentario del suo rapporto di collaborazione con Pellegrino Tibaldi nei cantieri della cappella Poggi in San Giacomo Maggiore a Bologna e di San Ciriaco ad Ancona.

The essay retraces some stages in the career of the Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana, focusing on his skills as a scenographer and a plasterer, and proposing a historical and documentary revision of his professional relationship with Pellegrino Tibaldi in the Poggi Chapel in San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna and in San Ciriaco in Ancona.

Questo testo, che anticipa un volume sulla Pala Gozzi, cerca di fare luce sui ‘misteri’ che sempre hanno avvolto questo dipinto, soprattutto sui segreti della sua vita fisica, dalle movimentazioni ai restauri. Il testo analizza e propone documenti d'Archivio in gran parte inediti e dà anche conto della assai scarsa bibliografia su questa tavola importantissima, prima opera finora conosciuta firmata e datata da Tiziano. E' stato pubblicato in un volume di scritti in onore di Donatella Zari, la grande restauratrice recentemente scomparsa, che nel 1987 restaurò il capolavoro insieme con il marito Carlo Giantomassi.

The activity of the Florentine-Marchigian painter, Antonio di Domenico da Firenze, in the field of book illustration is here reconstructed for the first time. His masterpiece as an illuminator is identified in a book of hours now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon related to the migration of the cult as well as the iconography of St Blaise towards the Italian Adriatic coast, due to individuals or groups of people who moved from the Dubrovnik Republic, where the saint
was venerated as patron. In the paintings produced in the town between the 15th and the 18th century, St Blaise is always represented as a bishop carrying a model of the town in his hand, to show the protection offered by the saint to the Republic. Because of different
reasons and patronages, the cult of St Blaise is quite spread in Italy and Europe, however, as for the Italian Adriatic coast, it was promoted by the citizens who came from Dubrovnik for business reasons, as shown by the paintings commissioned to Titian by Alvise Gozzi
(Ancona, in the Marche) and to Padovanino by Nikola Radolović (Polignano a Mare, in Puglia), both Ragusans. The essay eventually aims at proposing an analysis of some wooden compartments by Giovanni Antonio da Pesaro (15th century), representing the stories of St
Blaise, as a probable commission by the documented confraternity of St Blaise of Ancona, established by some Schiavoni people in the 15th century. The compartments, preserved in various museums and collections, could be the remnant panels of the documented altarpiece belonging to the chapel of the Schiavoni confraternity in the church of St Dominic.

Lo scopo di questo saggio è analizzare il fenomeno della migrazione del culto e dell’iconografia di San Biagio verso la costa adriatica italiana, grazie al movimento di singoli o gruppi di persone provenienti dalla Repubblica di Dubrovnik, dove il santo era venerato
come patrono. Nella pittura prodotta in questa città tra il XV e il XVIII secolo, San Biagio è infatti sempre rappresentato come vescovo con il modellino della città sulle sue mani, per dimostrare la protezione offerta dal santo alla Repubblica. Per diverse ragioni e patronati, il
culto di San Biagio è abbastanza diffuso in Italia e in Europa, ma sulla costa adriatica italiana è stato promosso, in particolare, da cittadini trasferitisi da Dubrovnik per motivi economici, come testimoniano ad esempio i dipinti commissionati a Tiziano di Alvise Gozzi (Ancona, nelle Marche) e al Padovanino di Nikola Radolović (Polignano a Mare, in Puglia), entrambi
ragusei. Il saggio si propone da ultimo di analizzare alcune tavole di Giovanni Antonio da Pesaro (XV secolo), rappresentanti storie di San Biagio, come probabile commissione della confraternita di San Biagio di Ancona, costituita nel XV secolo da Schiavoni. Gli
scomparti, ora conservati in diversi musei e collezioni, potrebbero essere ciò che resta della documentata pala d’altare della cappella della confraternita degli Schiavoni nella chiesa di San Domenico.

La serie archivistica qui descritta riguarda l’Ufficio I affari penali e la segreteria di tale ufficio, facente parte della Direzione generale affari penali del Ministero di Grazia e Giustizia della Repubblica Sociale Italiana (R.S.I.). A tale ufficio pervenivano gli avvisi di reato provenienti dalle Procure della Repubblica del territorio del nuovo regime, concernenti tutti i tipi di reato di cui la Procura competente veniva a conoscenza. I reati descritti erano quindi di diverse tipologie, variando da semplici furti, agli omicidi, ai reati più propriamente politici commessi da bande partigiane descritte come “ribelli”. Questo fa sì che la documentazione di questa serie archivistica si inserisca a piena titolo nel più ampio quadro delle fonti per la storia della R.S.I., della Resistenza e dei suoi protagonisti, in aggiunta ad altre serie conservate presso l’Archivio Centrale dello Stato, in particolare negli archivi fascisti e nei fondi del Ministero dell’Interno.

The paper identifies Arcangelo di Fiordimonte, the 15th-century traitor who conspired against the Da Varano, the ruling family of Camerino, as the nobleman and merchant Arcangelo d'Antonio Chiavelli, a member of a minor branch of the Chiavelli family of Fabriano. His life is here reconstructed for the first time, following him from his native Camerino through Ancona, where he found shelter before being murdered by a Da Varano hitman.

In the city of Ancona in the Marche region, a sector of a late Roman burial ground was
discovered in piazza Cavour during preventive archaelogical research, near a large necropolis on the hill sides of Cappuccini and Cardeto, occupying all the Pennocchiara’s moat. The burial ground comprised five tombs of “cappuccina” type and one into a wooden case. With the exception of tomb 5, cortaining a glass unguentarium, no funerary ser was found. On the basis of stratigraphic data and analysis of the few objects found, it is possible to say that the burial ground was in use between the imperial and the late Roman period.

The paper reconstructs an event dating back to 1392, when the commune of Florence sent a letter from Coluccio Salutati’s chancellery to the city of Ancona asking for four notaries to be assigned to the office of notarii forenses malleficiorum. The process of their selection and the fulfilment of their six-month work in the criminal courts of the foreign rettori of Florence are retraced up until their return to their native city. This episode assumes further significance when taking into consideration, on the one hand, the role of Florence in the troubled situation of the Marca Anconitana in the last decade of the fourteenth century; on the other, the intermediation of the Ferretti family in Ancona, which favoured the choice of at least one notary connected to it. In the conclusion, the question is posed if the circulation of professional people between Ancona itself and the main communes might have influenced the creation of a cultural milieu, enabling it to receive and to assimilate the innovative political communication developed by Salutati.

L’indagine ricostruisce un episodio risalente al 1392 quando, con una lettera della cancelleria di Coluccio Salutati, il comune di Firenze richiede a quello di Ancona quattro notai per l’ufficio di notarii forenses malleficiorum. Di questi ultimi si ripercorre il processo di selezione e l’espletamento dell’incarico semestrale presso le curie criminali dei rettori forestieri di Firenze, sino al loro ritorno in patria. La vicenda assume un significato ulteriore prendendo in considerazione, da un lato, il ruolo di Firenze nella turbolenta situazione della Marca nel decennio finale del XIV secolo; dall’altro, l’intermediazione della famiglia anconetana dei Ferretti, che favorisce la scelta di almeno un notaio ad essa legato. Viene in conclusione avanzato un interrogativo circa l’influenza che la circolazione di personale professionale tra la stessa Ancona e i centri principali del mondo comunale potrebbe aver avuto sulla creazione nella città adriatica di un clima culturale atto a recepire ed assimilare l’innovativa comunicazione politica inaugurata da Salutati.

À partir d’une perspective générale sur l’évolution de la fonction consulaire au tournant des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, cet article aborde différents aspects du fonctionnement de la chancellerie consulaire française à Ancône et dans les vice-consulats satellites. À travers la reconstruction de l’activité de chancellerie de son début, dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, jusqu’à la période révolutionnaire et impériale, on analysera le milieu social et les parcours de recrutement des chanceliers et autres employés subalternes. L’étude des pratiques chancelières permettra, en outre, d’envisager l’organisation et la division de tâches dans la production et l’enregistrement des actes et des dépêches, et de découvrir des exemples de formulaires et autres instruments de travail que les consulats pouvaient s’échanger. Cette analyse contribuera aussi à retracer une évolution de la typologie des actes et des usagers de l’Ancien Régime aux guerres napoléoniennes.

In a broader prospective on the evolution of the consular function between the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, this article discusses various aspects of the functioning of the French consular chancery in Ancona and in the subordinate vice-consulates. Through the reconstruction of the chancery activity from its beginning, in the first half of the eighteenth century, until the revolutionary and imperial period, it will be possible to show social origins et recruitment paths of chancellors and other subordinate employees. The study of chancery practices will further consider the organization and division of tasks in the production and recording of acts and dispatches, and show examples of formularies and other working instruments exchanged between consulates. The analysis will also contribute to trace an evolution of the typology of acts and users from the ancien régime to the Napoleonic wars.
