concept of green intellectual capital is recently known because of the popular trend of the
environmentalism nowadays. However, there is no previous research exploring about the
determinants of green intellectual capital. Though governments are traditionally responsible
for nationwide social welfare, it is difficult for them to meet all of the society’s expectations
and needs. Then CSR can enhance social welfare because it can fill the lack of the
capabilities and resources of governments. Companies begin socially responsible activities
and meet environmental regulations that lead to a win-win situation. Environmental
consciousness plays an important role nowadays due to the rise of international
environmental regulations. Companies should not shirk their responsibilities, because the
increase of CSR and environmental consciousness could drive them to enhance green
intellectual capital. The purpose of this study is to predict the causal relation of CSR on
green intellectual capital through the mediating variable that is environmental
consciousness. This study is an adaptation of the previous study conducted by Chang and
Chen (2012). Primary data collection was done by releasing 400 sets of questionnaires and
addressed to the managerial level of respondents who work in eleven manufacturing
companies—based on ICMD 2010 data—that selected by purposive sampling method, with
the response rate of 17.75%. Collected data are analyzed using Partial Least Squares (PLS)
technique of SmatPlS-v2 software. The results obtained shows that the causality of CSR,
environmental consciousness, and green intellectual capital are significant and the effect of
CSR on green intellectual capital is strengthened through environmental consciousness as
mediating variable. In the future, similar study still probably to be developed (in Indonesia)
based on covariance-based SEM to gain the clear theoretically confirmation.
