Los portales de calculo surgen para ofrecer a los usuarios, a traves de la Web, el acceso a los recursos y servicios de grandes centros de computo de alto rendimiento. Con el proposito de evaluar la seguridad sismorresistente de edificaciones existentes o por construir se ha desarrollado un Portal de Calculo, denominado “Portal de Porticos” (PDP) al cual se puede acceder a traves de la pagina Web http://portaldeporticos.ula.ve. Este Portal contiene un programa de elementos finitos que permite el analisis no lineal de estructuras aporticadas sometidas a solicitaciones extraordinarias como por ejemplo sismos. El elemento finito disponible actualmente se basa en la teoria de dano concentrado, considerando fatiga de bajo ciclaje en estructuras planas de concreto armado. En este trabajo se describe el Portal, la teoria del dano concentrado, algunos ejemplos y aplicaciones desarrollados en el mismo.

Efficient virtual product creation combined with predictive engineering requires high-capacity computing and communication technologies as well as fast and transparent supply of knowledge, information and data. For this purpose, grid technologies offer great potentials for virtual product creation. One objective of grid computing is to perform more realistic simulations for better prediction of effects with reduced costs. This paper describes the approach and methods how engineering analysis problems in product development and manufacturing can be solved in the flexible context of CAE applications and grid computing infrastructure. The presented results are partly achieved in a joint project with partners from research and industry.

In order to provide computer facilities for almost 20,000 students plus a thousand of faculty, university have to spend a lot of budget. The time has changed, the technology has changed either. Most of computer utilize only 5-20% of peak time, so they are almost idle. So the previous system might not have enough capacity to support the use of end-user in term of number of users and number of applications used. The new budget must be provided for the new system. Instead of spend more budget, more advance techniques such as clustering, load balancing and grid technology has been raised to improve the system performance by using current system. Our team has researched and tried to implement these techniques deployed into current system With more than 3,000 PC computers, we would have a supercomputer as powerful as 3TFlopps in performance.
